BOLA for the 1000?

Who will be going there to watch the race?

If not there where will YOU be?

I'm not sure what I will be doing yet......

Somewhere south of San Felipe for me if I can get away that week... Perhaps at the sulfur mine?

I know some Nomads helping pit at Bahia de los Angeles... I imagine it will be very 'busy' there!

I am also waiting to hear back from The Squarecircle who may get assigned to run a radio relay further south... and we may be helping him again, like at the 500... for Baja Pits.

I'm thinking the sulphur mine area ought to be a good spot -

Yep, I watched the '03 San Felipe 250 at the sulfur mine and the '75 Baja 1000 there as well...

1975 was Score's first Baja 1000, it was a big loop starting and ending in Ensenada. Class 7 mini trucks came through the sulfur mine first which was odd until we later learned a last minute change allowed classes 6, 7 and 11 to bypass the Seven Sisters section and run the highway from Cataviņa to El Crucero/ Calamajue jcn. then head north. The rest ran to the Pacific to just south of Punta Prieta then turned north.

1976 and 1977 were renamed Baja 1000 Km. (closer to 700 miles long) and stayed in the high country between Ensenada and Mexicali. The 1978 race was the first to go down Valle Chico and out via Matomi Canyon, then back north to San Felipe and Ensenada. I ran a pit at Borrego Wash off Hwy. 3 that year for Los Campeones.

1979 was Score's first Baja 1000 run to La Paz (the first La Paz run since 1973) and was the race I was a co-driver in... what fun! (even though we broke early)...

I'll be south of Cocos this Friday to check out a watch location. Before El Curcero about 9 miles are a set of rollers after you come out of the wash from the Calamajue mission site. I always thought that would be a great place for some race watching. I expect some good jumps. But I'm checking to see if the 5 mile road splitting to the north goes to hwy1 is good for a 4x4. I don't want to get stuck back there. After the fast cars and trucks go thru we're going further south. After the check point closes for the new section at Loreto we're going to sweep it.

While I'm in the area I hope to also check out the short cut road that goes from hwy1 to San Antonio that David K told me about.

TW, on the 'Baja Locations from Space' thread, here on Nomad... I have a close up of all the roads you mention at Hwy. 1, including:

The water truck short cut to Calamajue made during the construction of Hwy. 1.

The original San Antonio road one km. from the above road.

El Crucero

The old L.A. Bay via Desengaņo road/ Rancho San Luis rd. jcn.

and just south of that a stones throw...

The short cut to San Antonio road, not on any map...

The paved L.A. Bay jcn.

San Antonio Shortcut LINK

Tom, here's the link to Google sat image...

San Antonio Shortcut & Old L.A. Bay Road at Hwy. 1

First click on where it says 'Link to this page', to make the map full size.... then...

You can zoom in or out and scroll to follow roads... Hwy. 1 goes down the center... The old L.A. Bay road is near the top going east, the San Antonio shortcut is near the bottom going west... the old Baja main road parallels Hwy. 1 a 1/4 mile to the west.

The shortcut road is just over 3/10 a mile south of the old L.A. Bay road... which is/was Km. marker 270.

I take it the 1000 will travel from LA Bay to Animas Bay? If this is so, how will they get there precisely? Run along the beach? I cannot open the Score-International .pdf file, so I just wanted to know...

Ken, they will be using the main road south to the San Francisquito/El Arco road (only going past the turnoff to Las Animas). The only beach they will be close to for about a mile is at Bahia San Rafael (Pancho's Place)...

See the SCORE map on the Off Road Expo pictures I posted here on Nomad... I believe you linked those photos on your Jeep blog page?

The mountain prevents any vehicle from staying next to the coast south of L.A. Bay.

I looked the map over a 2nd time, and yes, the mountain (also shown in the Baja Almanac) keeps the racers from traveling along the beach. Thanks for the extra info... :light:

BOLA , for the 1000 is a good spot, once while passing thru we sat a had tacos and refrescos with a crew of racer types, whom I normaly shy away from, and we had a great time and learned some of the finer details of off road racing. Wish I could join ya', wherever you go have fun!

Returned last night from my quick Baja scouting trip. I'll post a trip report later. It was interesting with a dark twist I'd never experienced before in Baja. The area I'll be to watch the race will be about 9 miles before El Crucero. There's a couple of small hills that should make for some good bike and car/truck action. It's 5.5 miles from hwy 1 at KM271 on a good dirt road. Anyone coming in on the road there is a split to the right at about 4 miles that also connects to the race course. I didn't go down it but it's in the almanac and it looked like it had been used when I went by.

Also found the short cut road (second road to San Antonio) from hwy1 between KM270 and KM271. At 9.5 miles in ( 29-11-44x114-16-53, 1705ft) it connects to the regular road out to hwy1 at KM252. At this jct of the two dirt roads you can see a new house being built on the side of the mountain to the NE. Another 1.5 miles there's a ranch on the left and at 12 miles is San Antonio.

Good Job TW!

We hope to see you at El Crucero! Come on down after all the big guys pass by... We have 4 Class 11s and those Rhinos to pit 4 in addition to all the others (including 4 trophy trucks), so we will be there until Friday midday, I imagine.
