I once went to New Orleans. Stayed in Algiers. Only white face for blocks and blocks. Wanted authentic cuisine. People kept telling me to go accross the river to the French Quarter. I persisted. Met a kid with a styro container balanced on her head. Freaked her out by talking with her. Asked her what she was eating. "Chitlins" came the reply. I knew I was on the trail cause I had heard the word before along with etuphe, gumbo etc. I didn't know what any of this was, just knew it was what I was looking for.

She pointed at the local tavern and my mouth started to water. I walked in and the most prototypical black matron you could imagine is stirring a kettle Julia Child style with arm wattles shaking like aftershocks at Asuncion. In the huge caldron was blue crab cooking. She was a bit startled but soon settled down when I told her that I wanted real southern food. Well out came the black eyed greens, collard greens, crawfish etuphe etc. On and on it went. Then I asked for the chitlins, she looked a bit askance, but I did not hesitate in downing a big mouthful that came up nearly as fast as it went down. She told me that it was an acquired taste and that the closer to the end, the better. This tasted so close to the end I swear that it had a curl to it. Anyway, I stay away from anything wrapped in it now.

The good news is most all of the hotdogs I have seen are really "pavo" turkey......not the fat filled leftover "whatever" is left to make the good ol' beef ones from the US....just in case someone should put a gun to your head you might reconsider......and thankfully guns are illegal....just in case....:wow:

Mexican Olives

tripledigitken - 5-13-2007 at 04:31 PM

A trip though Ensenada allways tempts us to stop for some food to take home. In this case a jar of Olives forced us to pull over.

MaryAnn and I went to dinner (AGAIN!) at Los Veneto's in Bahia de Los Angeles.............. I'm telling you all! World Class food! Everything I've had there is just better than the last!

If Georock sees this thread............maybe she will "bore" you all with the play, by play of the fantistic meal they prepared for herself and hubbie's 25th. wedding annivercery! If you want a nice (more than nice) meal in Bahia, I highly recommend Veneto's!

Cool picture tripledigitken. I've meant to stop at those stands every trip but am always too tired from the drive from Catavina.

My dad loves that stuff. People eat tripe all over the world. Personally I hate it. It's flavorless. Springy, it's like eating rubber bands. After chewing off one section you start working on another until you're piece of rubber is small enough to swallow.

Lencho ----

Chitlins, from what I understand, are cooked intestines. Not just intestines but, full intestines from pigs. [ Im fighting back a big barf urge as I think about it]
A while back in San Diego, my friend had rental units, one of which he rented to a tenent who, just one time, cooked chitlins in the unit. Six months later the tenent moved and the apartment had to be renovated. The odor of the chitlins had permeated the walls, the upholstery and the carpet. Jeezo....it was bad.

Cypress - 5-14-2007 at 06:42 AM

Chitlins. Now you're talking!:bounce:Wash 'em very well. Boil in seasoned water, dip in seasoned flour mixture, then deep fry till golden brown.:bounce:Very important!!!Only cook outdoors.:D

I LOVE Menudo and Pozole too!!

I am always looking for a good place to eat it. With the influx of Mexican immigrants and the opening of so many wonderful little Taquerias, it's easier to find. I like to add all the many fresh condiments that pep it up.

I also enjoy POZOLE. This past week I whipped up a big pot of Pork Pozole and have been enjoying it all week long. Again, I like to add all the fresh condiments.

Maybe sometime...if we have another BBBB, we can whip up a huge pot of Menudo or Pozole for all to enjoy.

As with octopus, that depends a lot on the cook. :)

--Larry

We were in Ensenada on Saturday and ate at the Casamar Restaurant (north/east side on main road headed south across from the Big Flag). We had Pulpo (octopus) cooked with Ancho Chilis. These were the most tender Pulpo I have ever tasted. (I eat Pulpo a lot!)

Can't recommend the dish too highly. The Black Sea Bass with Avocado Sauce wasn't too shaby either. Give it a try! The bill for three with 6 adult beverages was $60.

too busy eating to take a picture, sorry.

a different kinda mexican food

woody with a view - 5-14-2007 at 07:03 PM

you know, when you're playing horseshoes on the beach, hanging out with your bro's and someone notices the pangueros are angling towards the beach? all they want is a few (in our opinion) $'s and a bottle of tequila?

well let's just say that we both got the better of that deal. everyone was HAPPY. they even threw in their cabrilla for the fish taco fiesta and stayed for an hour as we talked story and shared a beer, or four!
