How many non-pavement miles (in Baja) have you covered in your lifetime?

Ken Cooke - 3-15-2007 at 10:01 PM

This should give us something to ponder...

Barry A. - 3-15-2007 at 10:20 PM

Wow, I have no idea, but I have been going down there for slightly over 53 years, and most of it has been on dirt roads.

I will have to think about that. :?::yes:

LarryK - 3-15-2007 at 10:32 PM

In 40 years, 5 or 6,000mi

David K - 3-15-2007 at 11:01 PM

Ditto to LarryK!

Of interest: Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas in '66, 800 unpaved miles!

bajadogs - 3-15-2007 at 11:08 PM

2,000,
Maybe about 2,000 miles over the years for me. Looking forward to more miles on dirt.
Good topic Ken!

Do sea miles count?

Dave - 3-15-2007 at 11:18 PM

dean miller - 3-16-2007 at 03:27 AM

I began visiting Baja in1951 ~ the paved road stopped at a theater near Hussongs, every thing south was dirt and unpaved...

Number of miles unpaved? GOK! a lot!

Great question!

Mexitron - 3-16-2007 at 06:11 AM

How many? A lot, but not nearly enough!

TMW - 3-16-2007 at 07:02 AM

1,675,391 miles to be exact. Now prove I didn't.

Ken Bondy - 3-16-2007 at 07:08 AM

Do air miles count? I have about 100,000 air miles in Baja although I did touch pavement at a few paved airstrips on many of those trips :). But for most of those miles I was off-pavement. All seriousness aside I probably have logged about 1000 miles driving off-pavement in Baja.

Packoderm - 3-16-2007 at 08:14 AM

I swear I must have racked up close to a thousand miles just going back and forth between Camp Gecko and town. I bet the small trips off pavement to camping spots and such represent a bigger chunk of our off road driving log than we might realize. It's a buttload of miles just to get to and from the whale whatching places.

True, however the ferry ship had begun service between La Paz and Mazatlan the year before, so we opted to drive back north on pavement to save time. It took us two weeks to drive down the peninsula (with stops, naturally).

DianaT - 3-16-2007 at 09:09 AM

Not enough --- yet. :tumble:

Baja Bernie - 3-16-2007 at 09:09 AM

This may not be what you were getting at BUT..............the beach in front of my home in La Salina is almost (was before the marina) 2 miles long and I figure I walked 6,240 miles there..............throw in the trips to the Cantina, 150 yards and many trips up to the Mesa I figure I walked over 7,000 miles just in La Salina since 1964............:lol::lol::lol:

Bob H - 3-16-2007 at 10:48 AM

Been going down there since 1984.... probably around 1,000 miles offroad for us. Need to do a lot more! Great question and it makes you think about the offroad trips you've made in the past. Fantastic memories.

David K and dean miller -
Any photos available from your early trips?
Had to me an amazing experience. I am sorry to see so much new pavement, but things change. As another post said, one nice thing is so much trash has been cleaned up during the last year along Highway 1.

bajaandy - 3-16-2007 at 11:39 AM

Wow.. great question Ken. While I can't come up with a number that would even be close to accurate, I would offer up an opinion that the miles traveled off road leave a far more lasting impression about the sites I've experienced in Baja than any "on-road" travel. So from that point of view, I want to keep racking up those off-road miles.

Neal Johns - 3-16-2007 at 11:58 AM

Gee, I don't know, but if I can count Marian's miles with mine, and the old dirt road counts as "off road" ....then I have some of you Pavement Pounders beat!:lol::lol:

Cypress - 3-16-2007 at 12:27 PM

20 or 30?:?:

Am I the only racer to check in?

thebajarunner - 3-16-2007 at 12:55 PM

I finished 8 1000's and half dozen 500's and we ran some random stuff out of Mexicali and San Felipe.
And we pre-ran all of them, more than once,
and in the NORRA days the drive home from La Paz was half on dirt.
Add in the random miles from random trips in the past dozen years and my total is probably somewhere between 20k and 30k but who knows?
I just don't remember many 'bad' miles off road in Baja, not many at all!!

Over 30 years...easily half as many as I'd like...and when I'm all done it will be more than twice as many as now :light:

Bob H - 3-16-2007 at 10:20 PM

I must admit that the offroad travel experience in Baja brings back stronger memories of exploring Baja, that's for sure. You just can't beat offroading in Baja and the people that you meet and sights that you see. There's just too much to take in that most people miss out on. Or, they are just to scared to do it. Like David K says "Too much Baja, too little time"

No Bob... It's SO much Baja, so little time!

There can never be TOO much BAJA (in my book, anyway)!!;D:lol::tumble:

Well, close enough...

AmoPescar - 3-16-2007 at 10:56 PM

NON-PAVEMENT MILES IN BAJA???

I always figured many of the miles in Baja were considered to be non-pavement, whether on a dirt track or paved highway....I'm thinking about roads like the old road from San Felipe to Puertocitos...isn't that considered to be non-pavement??? LOL!!!

Miguelamo  :?:

Neal Johns - 3-17-2007 at 05:10 AM

Sure, Amo, and so did the "paved" BOLA road for much of its life!

AmoPescar - 3-18-2007 at 12:09 AM

How many non-pavement miles (in Baja) have I covered in my lifetime?

Well quite a few...MANY hundreds for sure...BUT NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH YET!!! I hope before my lifetime is over that I'll have logged MANY thousands more!!!!

Miguelamo  :tumble: :P

OK you got me. Maybe the decimal point is off a few places.

I drove the dirt course for this weekends 4x4 competition at Las Delicias in Rosarito Beach! Hopefully, that counts a little...:saint:
