TOYOTA commercial and test ride....

surfer jim - 3-26-2007 at 07:39 AM

Since everybody likes to talk Toyota....how about that commercial where they drive up a ramp towing a trailer...the ramp pivots and they drive back down....heard that was REAL .....

also I went on a test ride Sunday in the TUNDRA....very quiet and smooth....

David K - 3-26-2007 at 09:03 AM

Jim, are you singing the Chevy blues?

Tomas Tierra - 3-26-2007 at 09:37 AM

my buddy pulled up in the new Tundra yesterday, nice, but isn't very Toyota looking. 20" factory rims! HUH?? Looks like a ford kinda.

He seems very happy so far..$46,000 sticker for the limited 4x4 with the 5.7ltr engine(no TRD package). Muy carro!!

tripledigitken - 3-26-2007 at 09:47 AM

$46,000.............:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

20" rims............:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Plastic bed.........:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

David K - 3-26-2007 at 09:53 AM

The TRD package is the only way to go... none of that street racer stuff!

The bed is composite, not plastic... First available in the '05 Tacoma (my truck) and it really is remarkable that it doesn't get damaged (or rust) and is lighter than steel... I throw tools, equipment, rocks, whatever, in my truck bed and don't worry at all about any damage.

TRD (Toyota Racing Development, ie Ivan Stewart's input)= Locking rear differential, 16" BFG Rugged Trail T/A tires, Bilstein gas shocks... all good stuff!

DianaT - 3-26-2007 at 09:58 AM

Like our 2003 Tundra a lot. Looked at the new ones---too big, too expensive for us. Looks like the Tacoma is catching up in size to the older Tundras.

Really like the FJ cruiser, except for need to use premium gas. Has anyone tried it with regular gas?

Diane

Cypress - 3-26-2007 at 10:01 AM

There's something about paying $46,000 for a truck that's a tad obscene to most people.

Hold on you Toyota fans don't lynch me so quick.

My reference to Plastic/Composite beds is in reference to a allmost 400HP $46,000 truck. They are fine in light duty trucks. Usually those 2 numbers (400 HP/$46,000) are associated with Diesel powered 5th wheel towing rigs. I'm not too sure about Composite Beds and 5th wheel towing.

I just wonder who the market buyer for that truck is. Maybe the toy haulers that travel to Glamis on the weekends, or the Gen Xer's hauling a KTM in the bed.

Don't imagine you will see too many of those in Baja.

I quess you can wait till they add a diesel powerplant and add a utility bed yourself........................$56,0000+? You're getting into mighty thin air.

New Toyota Tundra is MUY CARO . ... ..este camion is un carro muy caro!!!

New Grand cherokee will run on biodiesel .... I wonder if it will run on regular diesel.. I doubt there are biodiesel stations on the Baja Pninsula..

Americans use more than TWICE the fossil fuels as Europeans..

We should all drive more fuel efficient vehicles and then walk or ride burros the last miles next time we go to Tinaja de Yubay or some such destination requiring sure traction

We need to use our legs before we lose the complete use of them... Apologies to those no longer ambulatory

Yeah, well, many of the countries in Europe are smaller than some of our states. Things are more concentrated over there. If their countries were as large as ours, they'd have already rioted over the 7.00/gallon gasoline that they have.

Also, very few countries in Europe have their own oil industry. That saves us a few bucks.

Plus, many countries dont have the level of employment nor the percentage of people employed full time that we do. People with jobs need to get to work. People who hang at streetside cafes in the Rues of France can walk.

It's really not an apples to apples comparison.

TMW - 3-26-2007 at 02:50 PM

I've heard that the Tacoma was midsized to make room for a new small Toyota mini-pickup.

Steve in Oro Valley - 3-26-2007 at 03:06 PM

I would be interested in a Toyota mini 4X4 trd if one existed...

Americans could still be just as productive and, enjoy life and all if they drove more efficiently and carpooled, etc...

Eventually, it will come down to what is in the interest of national security.

Or would half the Royal Navy be on the way?

Maybe they are.

Boy, I wish I could get a Toyota diesel - those 2.4TDs they sold in the 80's were killer!

People have to at some point start accecpting personal responsibilitys for just what this world is turning into enviromentaly. The way its going now, you better start getting in shape and "know where you are walking" because the fuel supplys are getting very expensive!! Steve in ORO VALLEY was making a good point. Go to France and get re-edjucated. Life is not all about sitting on freeways going nowhere with a half empty gas tank. Think about it.

I am going to stand by Hook on this one. If it wasn't for these gas guzzling United States, France would be speaking German... TWICE. Since we saved their sorry butts in both World Wars.

They have little to no respect for us despite the tens of thousands of American boys who gave the ultimate sacrifice to give them their freedom back from the Germans. They continue to import oil from hostile counrties and test nuclear bombs ABOVE GROUND in the South Pacific.

France, educate us? No thanks!

Mexitron - 3-27-2007 at 06:47 AM

From Wikipedia:

"After an American victory at Saratoga in 1777, France, with Spain and the Netherlands as its allies, entered the war against Britain. French involvement proved decisive, with a French naval victory in the Chesapeake leading to the surrender of a British army at Yorktown in 1781."

We owed them for that one.

A new mini Toyota might just work okay in Baja--I drove my four banger for 14 years down there then at 225K gave it to my worker as a going away present...he's put another 25K on it--no ay problemas.

TMW - 3-27-2007 at 06:56 AM

I think gas is still a pretty good bargain for what it allows you to do. Do I want to pay $3 a gal, no I'd prefer 25 cents a gal. But that day is gone as is the 25 cent pack of smokes and 5 cent cokes. If you drive 15,000 miles a year and get 15 miles per gallon, at $3 a gal that's $3,000 your spending a year, $250/mo. The average family spends more that that on housing, gas and electric to heat and cool the house. If you have kids your food bill is more and if you don't have kids your food is still more if you include your beer. If your leasing or still paying for your vehicle it's more. Your medical bills and medical insurance for you and your family are more. I know there are some of you that are retired living in Baja where your cost of living is low, but just think, your already living the good life and don't need to drive so your not paying much for gas anyway.

Crusoe - 3-27-2007 at 07:08 AM

David.....With all due respect to you.......I completely agree with you 100% on all you state about France-WW2, etc., etc..That was then(50 years ago and Hitler was truly a madman and needed to be stopped) and this is now!! Our present war has cost us some 3600 young men abd some 20k wounded. Its all just a matter of prespective in how you see it and how closely it affects you.If you were an 8 year old Iraqi boy laying in a hospital bed, with both your legs blown off, looking at your 6 year old little sister with a missing arm and both your parents were dead, your prespective of George Bush as compared to Adolf Hitler wouldn't be much different.Right now the Bush- Cheeney gang are in Iraq for one thing only. Our country needs more oil. Are freeways, in every major city, and then some are clogged with one person driving one vehicle with an average speed of about 6 to 15 m.p.h..This clog extends up to one hundred miles long in some major metrpolitan areas.I was just defending Steve in Oro Valleys comments on more fuel efficient vehicles. How much is enough? I am seeing advertisements now for 2 million dollar condos in Cabo del San Jose with parking for your 40ft. 500k diesel pusher motor home. Another big development in San Fillepe as well, with plenty of golf courses, and more 2mil. condos. with up to 45ft. motothome parking. The planet as we know it(and Baja) can not sustain this type of whimsical consumption for very much longer. For the record..... I am very much pro- American. This country is great, but it also has a real responsibilty to make the world a better place with all our smarts and technolgy know how.I have just one question for you.If your also pro American and feel strongly about your convictions, why did you buy a Toyota?

TMW - 3-27-2007 at 07:21 AM

["If your also pro American and feel strongly about your convictions, why did you buy a Toyota?"]

What's so American about Ford or chevy when they are assembled in Canada or Dodge that's owned by a German company. Where do you think Toyota is assembled at? And what percentage of parts are American made?

tripledigitken - 3-27-2007 at 08:01 AM

capt. mike - 3-27-2007 at 08:21 AM

.................gas costs less than bottled water!!!!!!!!........

am currently paying $4-$5 a gal for avgas, in EU its about $9-$10 a gal!!

gas is a bargain in my opinion. but i try to maximize its usage.

David K - 3-27-2007 at 08:28 AM

Understand the passion here... I am in favor of better performance and improved milage! I bought a Toyota, afterall! It has to do with freedom too.

Saddam Hussein was the Hitler of our times, and like WWII we did what was necessary even though neither Germany or Iraq attacked us (directly).

That little boy was missing legs more likely from a suicide bomber or land mine planted by the supporters of Saddam's side, not the liberators (U.S.)...

It is a crime that the media poisons us with their slant... Just ask the troops who have been there or repeatedly volunteer to go back about our mission there.

If Bill Clinton (or another Dem) was the one decided to enforce the U.N. sanctions, the media would love this war... When Clinton invaded Yugoslavia that didn't seem to bother anyone!

Guilty as charged........maybe more guilty under the NHL idea that the second one in on a fight is worse than the perpetrator.

I'm actually all for maximizing our fuel efficiency and dont disagree with Steve-O except that the comparison between the US and Europe is not a fair one. Let's now compare the EU to, say, a sub-Saharan country and see how they measure up. Of course it's not a fair comparison.

I'm mostly against these "one size fits all" solutions to fuel economy as a threat to economic freedom........which in this day and age IS ABOUT THE ONLY FORM OF FREEDOM. You cant expect a vehicle that's purpose is to carry 5-10 tons to get 30mpg. You cant blame a family of 4-5 for wanting a little more metal around their loved ones.

It's the idiots that commute in single-occupant vehicles on freeways in gridlock with 300+ hp status-symbols that are the problem, IMO. Same route, same time, every day. THOSE are the people to target.

All in all, I think fuel in the 3.00 range is about where it should be. Yeah, it hurts, but nothing makes people conserve faster than economics.

That's my take.........

surfer jim - 3-27-2007 at 03:38 PM

...all I did was ask if anyone had seen a TOYOTA commercial....

Crusoe - 3-27-2007 at 04:47 PM

David....Again I completely agree with you. And Hook... you are spot on in your assesment. I agree with you 100%. The thing I am having a problem with is... that it is very hard for me to watch all these nice small absolutely pristine untouched places in Baja fall to development. Not just one or two places over the years, but many and before you know whats happened, the whole wildness and remote feeling will be gone, and Baja will become another county just the same as San Diego County. It seems to me that 1960 was not that long ago, and just compare that Baja to our present Baja. When they are able to pave most of the main roads it will only bring more development. Its all happening right before our eyes. Its just sad for me to watch it happen. I hope you can understand. There never is any going back.

David K - 3-27-2007 at 05:17 PM

AMEN!!!

I wish it was 1960 or even 1970 again... in Baja! Well, here in San Diego County, too! However, do I need to be 3 or 13 all over again, too?

What technology does the I-force engine have that they didnt include in the new Tundra?

I am pretty sure that the standard engine in the new Tundra is the largest one that was available in the '06 Tundras. Wasnt that an I-force engine?

bajaguy - 3-27-2007 at 08:45 PM

I-Force was their "standard" V-8 last year (4 point something liter). The new 07 Tundra has the I-Force and a new larger "mega" V-8.

Tomas Tierra - 3-27-2007 at 09:31 PM

the new big engine one is an I-Force as well.

David K - 3-27-2007 at 09:42 PM

Believe me the 4.0 litre V-6 in my Tacoma is all the power you will need... 245 HP I believe is the rating...

That may well be, David, but it's a somewhat moot point. That engine is not available in any 4x4 model in the new Tundra. Not too many interested in Baja would be interested in a 4x2. 236 HP on the 4.0 liter engine, BTW.

Taco TTs (Tent Tow-ers) just aint the same thing, man. Toyota is trying to move beyond the Tonka class with the new Tundra. If it's like any other market they enter, they will probably do just fine.

Looks like the new Tundra 4x4 crew cab, long bed weighs about 1500# less than my F350 4x4, supercab, diesel. Figure maybe a 300-400# difference in engine weight, maybe saving about 150-200# in the bed length discrepancies and the composite vs metal difference.........that's still about 1000# of weight difference somewhere. :?::?::?::?: It will be interesting to see how they hold up, towing at or near their capacity.

Not that that American trucks aren't subject to problems doing this, dont you know.

GVWR are significantly less than my F350. I can load about 1 k more. My CGVWR is around 20 k; looks like the big Tundra is about 17.7 k.

But what were they thinking with that 26 gallon tank? If it gets 14 city, towing around 10k will probably drop that into the neighborhood of 10 mpg. 260 mile range? Will they make it from El Rosario to Jesus Maria? Just barely........better hope for no head wind.

Bout damn time Toyota went with 4 wheel disc brakes........

Slowmad - 3-28-2007 at 04:52 PM

Drove one of those suckers last month (07 Tundra 4X4).
Quick impressions: major cab luxury, so-so acceleration with the smaller 8-cylinder, and what felt like typical superlative Toyota build quality.
Was not impressed with the payload for use with a camper.
Looking forward to real-world (Baja low-range crawling under load) reviews.

David K - 3-28-2007 at 05:02 PM

Oh well, makes no diff. to me, Hook... I am only letting those who ask know that my experience with Toyota (and other Japaneses makes) has been excellent.

My experience with American brands has been very disappointing and expensive!

Neal Johns and other Baja Amigos sang the praises of Toyota Tacomas before I got my first one ('01), and I was amazed at how solid and trouble free a truck could be under the conditions I put it through!

I have had (since before 16) a VW street legal buggy, Jeep Cherokee Chief, Subaru 4WD wagons (three in a row), Mitsubishi Mighty Max truck, Mazda MPV van, Plymouth Grand Voyager van, and my two 4WD Tacomas.

My dear amigo Hook, please know that this is what I do (post stuff on Nomad about Baja) and nobody is forcing you to look at what I post. Yes, they are some of the same photos and same comments I have posted before.... However, there are NEW people here every day and I continue to get emails praising my sharing my Baja-ism on the Internet.

I am very sorry what I am doing is bumming you out. I want to help people discover adventures in Baja, I enjoy writing about Baja... You did follow me on one of the group outings, even... I was happy to meet you. I am not intentionally posting to irritate you or the others who would like me to go away because they think I am some kind of threat to 'their Baja'.

Now, when I see something that doesn't interest me or I don't like... I move on to something that does interest me. But, I would not put down the person who posted those things because what he does will not take away from my ability to post stuff here... There is no LIMIT to the amount of Baja sharing a Nomad can do.

How about allowing me to enjoy Baja Nomad and I wish you the same and ignore my 'bad' habit of showing old photos or talking about Baja stuff repeatedly. I mean, I could do worse... Right?

Peace, Love and Fish Tacos to you Mr. Hook!

Hey if their isn't anything interesting to me to write about, I just go back to Google satellite and look for old mission trails, from space! Have you seen my posts on the El Camino Real from Space? They are posted on the Baja Historic Interests and Literature forum.

David.......Your reply to Hook was again spot-on! Please.... never change your style. Really.... you could post more old pictures and tell more tales and all the newer members like myself are the real winners. Can you just imagine if this website had been available to folks in the 60s and 70s. Wow!! " Keep On Truckin and Postin". Thanks:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

bajaguy - 3-29-2007 at 06:25 AM

OK, not to drag this out, but to clarify, I would be first in line to buy a Tacoma if Toyota offered it with the 4.7 liter I Force V-8.

David K - 3-29-2007 at 07:48 AM

You guys! :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

DianaT - 3-29-2007 at 08:05 AM

Well, to not repeat myself, I won't thank David K again for all the information I have gathered from him. :tumble::tumble:

Besides, I love our Got Baja Bumper sticker --- it sits ABOVE a political bumber sticker with which I suspect David would disagree, but we do agree about Baja.:yes:

Back to Toyota. The first time we saw the double cab short bed Tacoma was almost 10 years ago --- They made that model for Central America and it was very popular. We really liked it, and still do, except we would like one with a full size bed and double cab. Wonder if Toyota will build one.

Tundra still going strong for now.

They have a long bed Tacoma with the double cab...

Guess we will have to look a little further. We just wandered around a local Toyota place----they had lots of Tacomas, but not one with a double cab and long bed----we didn't speak to a salesperson.

Thanks for the info!

Why dont you just form the fan club that you so deperately need, instead of subjecting us to all this Baja Budda preening, day after day? Even the Lord only requires formal worship once a week.

Gawd, it gets old.

Cant you just make up a nice coffee-table book of all your Baja travels and look through it 2-3 times a day? Maybe show it to the neighbors over the back fence, for the needed stroking.

I guess I reached my limit .......again. Made it a couple months this time.

Bring it on, fan club. I'll treat it as penance for my sacrilege........

Hook, you are wasting your time - he'll never get it.:lol::lol::lol:

Roberto, I do get it... You don't.

I am fully aware that I am posting the same photos and information repeatedly... What you (and those that think like you) refuse to get is that Nomad (like economics) is not STATIC... It is dynamic, ie. NEW people come here all the time... They are the ones I post the old stuff for, and as you can read above, they appreciate it.

There is NO limit on how many people can post here, and my posting a lot does not prevent you or anyone else from posting when you want. Baja Nomad is dynamic not static...

There is no logic to your complaints. Don't read my stuff if you don't like it. Don't compain, as it doesn't change anything but making your dislike of my helping (new) Nomads all the more obvious.

Just think of the good you could do if you took the same amount of time (whining about my posts) to actually contribute something useful or interesting to Baja travelers? Of course that would make you appear to be someone who is generous and kind and I am not sure if you can handle a 180 degree change in your attitude??? It would be nice and it would be most welcomed!;D

How did that go ... cluck cluck cluck?:lol::lol::lol:

But, you are right I don't contribute anything to Baja travelers. And I don't lie or take advantage of others either. ANd I don't give a flying #### what you or your clan think would be most welcomed, so stick it where the sun don't shine.

David K - 3-29-2007 at 10:20 PM

Nice... really nice. Your 'friendliness' really gets you places in life, huh Roberto?

I will remind you that we met only once (at your former lot at Camp Gecko)and it was nice, I thanked you for helping a friend, gave you a sticker and that was it. We never have talked in person since.

Since then you have acted hostile and on that other forum posted lies and hate about me... Why? I have done nothing to you to provoke that kind of treatment. Is it you got some kind of 'brownie points' for the amount of anti David K stuff you can come up with? Time to grow up Roberto, I will be 50 this year and I suspect you are older... Can't this college boy stuff end?

If there are issues still stirring in your head that you can't let go of, then let's get them resolved. I do not have any reason to lie, and am against it for personal reasons. The truth about certain things in the past may not be as colorful as believing any stories you are holding on to.

Rather than doing any more laundering here on the forum, you can U2U me. You know like that really 'nice' one from 9-17-03...

I would like a truce to you hostilities towards me, as I have never been hostile to you... only defensive.

Thanks.

Uh, I think this tread was about Toyotas. Can you tell any of us, Roberto, what your personal issues have to do with Toyotas? You can't possibly be that big of an :moon:
