Do you need a hook-up or are you looking to dry camp ?
Hook - 4-24-2007 at 01:23 PM
How many days do you have from the time you cross the border to the time you need to be back?
rts551 - 4-24-2007 at 03:46 PM
Where exactly do you want to go. "nice beach between san felepe and mulege " (sic) Thats a lot of territory and depending on what your thoughts are
not a good road for RV's.
Gulf side or Pacific side? Camp or RV park.. more info needed and there will be more than enough opinions.
samsam - 4-24-2007 at 09:49 PM
I will have about 3-4 days after x-ing border, i would like hook ups but OK dry or if can drive to dump and fill water - I got kids
I would like to go to the Gulf side . I don't mind driving 500 miles or so..
The roads, I have a 35 RV so the roads should be reasonably good.

With kids, we love Playa El Requeson because the water is shallow and protected on both sides.
Playa Naranja is also nice and has showers and enclosed palapas.
On the way down, I wouldn't look for hoop-ups. Depending on how fast you want to make the trip you coould stay at El Pabellon in San Quinton, Rancho
St Inez in Catavinia, Lakeside or El Padrito in San Ignacio. You can hook-up at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio if you like but it lacks any ambiance.
Stop in Mulege to shop and fill your water tank at the edge of town then stop at Serinidad to dump on the way to your beach location. With two kids we
are good for a week with sewer and a few 5 gallon jugs makes us good for a week of water.

3-4 days? I would select Daggett's at Bay of LA
If you can stretch it to 5-6 days I would push to Bay of Conception.
Bob and Susan - 4-25-2007 at 06:26 AM
alan's right...3-4 days is not long enough for mulege...
it WILL take you 2 long days down and a looong day to return...
that's three of your four...
if you leave early early...you will make the bay of LA in one no sweat....
then one back...
2 days on the beach
samsam - 4-25-2007 at 07:56 AM
I emailed Dagett's, I don't need reservations do I..
Thanks for the ideas.

Mulege area is out of the question. You will spend the bulk of your time inside your rig getting there and back. You might as well spend it in front
of your house and save the fuel costs.
I think I'd opt for a camping area south of San Felipe. Water should be nice. Probably save about 4-5 hours driving each way over BOLA where the water
COULD still be too cold for comfort.
tripledigitken - 4-25-2007 at 12:52 PM
Samsam,
The suggestion for BOLA is a great one. However, with only 3-4 days, first time driving south, and driving a motorhome, I'm going to suggest
something different. If you had a few more days I think it would make sense.
I would test the waters by driving no further than San Quentin. Several RV parks there are close to the ocean. Driving time is an easy 6 hours,
rather than 10 to 11 hrs.
Just my 2 cents. A trip to BOLA with 4 days to spend driving an RV with kids may turn into a marathon rather than an enjoyable time. After this
first trip you will feel more comfortable driving and the family will know what to expect.
Whatever you choose take you time and have fun knowing that it's the first of many trips.

I would just go to one of the campos south of San Felipe such as Punta Estrella to make the best of such a short visit.
Hook - 4-25-2007 at 02:40 PM
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. Time to embrace the warm weather and cast off the blustery conditions of winter and spring.
Why anyone might want to spend it in the fogbank that is San Quintin weather is a mystery to me, too.
Give me warmth any day. You wont find it in SQ in May.
comitan - 4-25-2007 at 03:28 PM
Requeson Leave the border very early in the morning, with everything you need for 4 days, have breakfast lunch dinner on the road that evening in
Paradise, you can do this with a 35ft RV easy. And bring swim suits, and wading shoes.
marla - 4-25-2007 at 04:05 PM
I can second the recommendation for Daggett's in BoLA. Beautiful bay, friendly people. We loved it there. And you can hire Ruben to take you out to
the islands in his boat. He is an excellent naturalist.
You would be spending a lot of time on the road for a four-day trip, though. San Felipe would be closer.
Personally I think Mulege is too far for four days though the beaches south of there are gorgeous.
Bob and Susan - 4-25-2007 at 04:28 PM
i was a "4 day mulege guy" just recently...

I drive a 34' motorhome. We have a place in Bahia de Los Angeles. First time Baja travelers will take much longer to make the drive than seasoned Baja
travelers. Time to BOLA from the border is 6.5 hours to San Quintin and an additional 6 hours further to the bay. On the flat and straight I travel 60
to 65, in the hills I average about 45 to 50 up and down.
If your looking for Hot and Sunny all day and a party atmosphere try San Felipe. I do have to admit, I haven't been in S. F. for almost 10 years. Too
crowded for my liking. South of S. F. might be a better choice. Maybe some of the people that go further South in that area can add some current
insight.
San Quintin is on the Pacific coast and will be cooler than the East coast. The days usually warm up nicely and the nights are almost always chilly.
Good RV parking available in S. Q. One park, Cielito Lindo, has "sometimes" electrical hookups, always sewer dump and never hook up to city water
anywhere in Baja. Almost always the water is brackish. Cielito Lindo restaurant and bar is available at the main campground. Laura's "Wet Buzzard
Cafe is available on the beach camp spot. The beach camping spot has a dump and Good hot showers but no hook ups.
El Pabellon a few miles further South is similiar. You can check them both out and make your choice upon arrival.
Drive with your lights on at all times. Helps the Big trucks see you coming. The road is little narrower South of San Quintin, but very doable. You
just have to get used to it.
If you have any other questions feel free to PM or ask here..

Yup, a little more narrow south of San Quintin (Km.0) !!
jerry - 4-25-2007 at 08:44 PM
all is great info but you need a vacation strecher you have enoff time to get there and back now you need some R and R time the fuel costs alone
warrents more time( if you broke down ) it could take 3-4 days for parts??
samsam - 4-25-2007 at 09:03 PM
You guys have been a lot of help. thanks a lot... it looks like BOLA but if it gets tough i will stay in San Quintin.
Bajian in the making...
AmoPescar - 4-25-2007 at 10:39 PM
Samsam,
IMHO...going to BOLA with that little time would be a waste of your vacation time. You would spend almost 2 full days making the drive there and
back.
I would stick with your original idea and maybe go to San Felipe. You could stay north of town at Pete's Camp ( http://www.petescamp.com ) or maybe go to the South Campos area about 25 miles south of town. Campo Nuevo Mazatlan is a nice camp right on the
beach.
All camps will be VERY BUSY that weekend, so you would need to arrive as early as possible. From San Diego it would only take you about 6 hours tops
in a motorhome.

I stopped going to SF more than 15 years ago because it just became a zoo. Memorial wknd is worse and not the time you want to go there with little
kids. If you were taking teenagers and OHV's you would fit in and probably have a blast. Given the ages of your children I would say the drive to
BoLA would be well worth it. You will be on the road a day each way to either place. 3 hours below Mexicali to SF or 10 below TJ to BoLA. Unless a
caravan is coming through you should have no trouble getting a space at Daggett's and in the event that happens there are several other places. The
weather is usually perfect there during the day and cools off enough to sleep well at night. SQ experiences the typical June gloom which is fine if
you happen to like fog but bring your parkas so you can sit around a campfire in the evening.
DonBaja - 4-26-2007 at 06:22 AM
I have never stayed here but when we were in San Felipe a month ago we found a nice RV Park about 5-7 miles south of San Felipe called Punta Estrella.
It is right on the beach, nice white sand, clean, but no hookups. The cost is $30.00 per day. I plan to stay there someday.
Google "Punta Estrella San Felipe"
David K - 4-26-2007 at 08:49 AM
The poor guy is sure getting a mix of suggestions!
If the plan is to spend as much time relaxing as possible with 6 hours or less drive, then Gypsy's RV park next to Cielito Lindo (just south of San
Quintin take paved side road at Km. 11)... Yes, you may have fog and gloomy weather, but a big beach a short walk away and it will be much quieter
than San Felipe (which will be an ATV, fireworks noisey zoo).
If you really want warm, sunny days then go south of San Felipe: Punta Estrella perhaps? Rancho (Laguna) Percebu will be noisey. Nuevo Mazatlan will
be quieter, but no hookups: http://vivabaja.com/806 and http://vivabaja.com/nm
If you don't mind a full day drive (8 hrs from border in car, 10 hours in moho) and want to see a beautiful Baja location and the finest desert
scenery along the way, then make it Bahia de los Angeles! Some photos begin on the following pages: http://vivabaja.com/105/page3.html and http://vivabaja.com/1005/page2.html and http://vivabaja.com/1106/page5.html

You probably have them but just in case....you'll be travelling south of Maneadero, so make sure you have your FMT's.
samsam - 4-27-2007 at 10:11 PM
what are FMT's
