Baja 500 Map

TMW - 5-12-2007 at 10:05 AM

SCORE will have the map posted Monday the 14th.

Looking at the BFG pit locations it appears the course will be similar to the 01 and 02 race course at least from Ojos back to Ojos. BFG will pit at Jamau off hwy3 at RM103. On the San Telmo Rd 17 miles from hwy1 at RM 186 and at LLano Colorado near hwy 1 at RM 281. Indications are that the loop thru Mikes will cross the Observatory Rd and pass Santa Cruz looping back across the Observatory Rd (near the BFG pit) and back to Trinidad and out to Hwy1.

Looks like a couple of new sections. From Uruapan back to hwy 3. Also not sure when they last used the section from hwy 3 K19 toward Ojos. I'm ready to do a little prerunning.

Paul your section has it all. If you've never been on the section thru Santa Cruz, you'll love it. For any chase people going in there, the race course comes out of Mike's onto the Observatory Rd (SCORE calls it the San Telmo Rd) ar RM156. On the Rd the sign says R. La Jolla. The property is part of the Meling ranch. Attached is the almanac map.

TMW - 5-16-2007 at 05:21 PM

There are 464 entries for this race. At the rate they are signing up it may top 500 by race day. Ensenada will be a zoo.

David K - 5-16-2007 at 09:08 PM

The have added a new class for the entry of VW factory teams.

VW TOUAREGS:
Volkswagen America is binging two of its factory race teams from the Dakar Rally to run in a special SCORE Int’l Truck class. Drivers are American Mark Miller and South African Giniel De Villers

["Among the female co-riders are Nancy Emde (Class 50)"]

Now that really impresses me. I assume she is from the famous Emde racing family.

TMW - 5-24-2007 at 04:38 PM

The time limit has been changed to 20 hours. Maybe it rougher than expected for some vehicles.

David K - 5-24-2007 at 10:53 PM

Thanks TW!

Hope to see you this weekend!

bajabird - 5-25-2007 at 06:36 AM

It hit me while driving this morning......
the race is about 400 miles, divided by 20 hours..... a 20 mph average...... is this for more publicity of the rhinos? Or is it for the expected traffic delays due to so many vehicles on the corse?

tunaeater - 5-25-2007 at 06:38 AM

Motorcycles, ATV's and some cars will be starting every 15 seconds.

David K - 5-25-2007 at 09:17 AM

Every 15 seconds will sure help get the race going with so many entrants... Good decision. In the 'old days' it was one per minute.

For the newbies to Off Road Racing, you are racing the clock, not other racers for the fastest time over the course. The first racer across the finish line isn't necessarily the winner. The 20 hour time limit includes whatever time you spend out on the course such as pitting (fueling, etc.), repairs, tire changes, nature calls, etc. Even though some of the racers will get up to 100 miles per hour or more, the average time for the fastest bikes and race trucks, buggies is in the 50's to low 60's MPH... because stops are included in the average race speed... as well as the really slow sections.

Also, each class is only competing for prize money with others in the same class.. it's like several races going on the same day. There are some bonuses for ovelall motorcycle and overall four wheeled racecar, however.

I did the route from Erendira to Santo Tomas last saturday and sunday for fun, it was pretty good road until you go over the mountain after Punta Cabras, had it in 4wd for the rocks and soft dirt but I don't know if I really needed it.
I'll be there race weekend at the hotel, stop by and have a coldie.
Look for my red Grand Cherokee with BAJAR8D license plate.

bajabird - 5-25-2007 at 11:07 AM

what kind of mods on your grand cherokee?
mine is at www.mybaja1000.com
I will be down with the landcruiser this race with bajapits at #7.

Edguero - 5-25-2007 at 12:38 PM

Looks a lot like yours, lifted a bit, 235/16 BFG's and Bilsteins.
I would like to get a bigger tire under it.
I like your brush gaurd, is it custom made? I bought one from Westin but it is more of a light bar.

bajabird - 5-25-2007 at 12:54 PM

mine was built in loreto, by gabby who works with stan burns (class 8 team) I also have the bilstein 5500's, terra kits and jks, i couldnt find anything else to do to the suv accept for the kn air filter (add heavy duty stainless lock rings, and the throttle body spacer.

so you got the flow through hood and hanneman fenders? hanneman built the first ones for me, and the hood was done as a group buy on jeep???.com

my doors have been rattling like a sob so I have to work that out, otherwise it is a fun pre-runner, boat puller.

have you had any of the death wobble issues?
