what?

pacificobob - 5-13-2007 at 11:54 AM

as a retired airline pilot i spent a career flying all over the world as well as seeing first hand pilot training and aircraft maintenance and how its done by various countries. please believe me, some of it would turn your hair white! american and european carriers have one standard....the rest of the worlds carriers....well they are all over the map. dont put your loved ones or your own precious self on these airlines to save a few dollars...... there IS a difference in safety!

JZ - 5-13-2007 at 12:01 PM

And just how often do they crash? Percentage wise against US based flights and against other modes of travel?? If we followed your logic to it's ultimate conclusion no one would leave the good ole US and even venture to a place like Mexico.

Give me a break pacifico bob. I think you had a few too many pacificos. When it's your time, it's your time.

good luck jz

pacificobob - 5-13-2007 at 12:07 PM

i hope your time is a long way off amigo....by the way...im not recomending staying home...just not riding in aircraft piloted and maintained by second rate staff....by the way....do you use seat belts?

You better stay safe and sound inside your nice house in the good ole USA Bob.

Because following your logic, watch out for these people posting next, 1) the crimilogist with a life time experience studying crime in the world's regions, and guess what, he reports there is lots more crime in Mexico, 2) next comes someone with a background on food and water supplies, and you know what?, you're gonna be a lot safer eating your salads from Wholefoods markets, and 3) next is a guy who is an expert in highway safety, and I'll be damned, the roads in other countries just don't match the safety standards of the good ole US. Should I continue??

Frankly, I'd be a lot more worried about a crash driving down hwy 1 then the Mexican operated plane going down. I'm also more worried about a 15 min tab ride through TJ!

I think you are an alarmist trying to prove your knowledge about something.

After 18 years with the Boeing Company; having first-hand knowledge of their high standards in manufacturing & quality control, as well as the fact that when a plane is sold to a foreign country, the purchase price includes human bodies that go with the plane for the sole purpose of teaching the local mechanics how to maintain the plane for a period of time...I'm talking years here, not days or weeks; I totaly agree with pacificobob!:bounce::bounce: There's a reason for the mantra..."If it's not Boeing, I'm not going!":tumble: Even a well-built plane in the hands of unskilled or incompetent mechanics or flight crews is scary as hell. Additionally, for ME, any government subsidized plane is one I won't be booking my precious (to me!) butt on! After all, there is a limit to the aerodynamic capabilities of duct tape, spit & baling wire!! If you'd ever heard stories pilots & stews tell amongst themselves, or seen pilots with alcohol on their breath being escorted away at security check points, you'd have a better understanding for what this ex-pilot is talking about! He know what he's talking about!!:bounce::bounce:

Yeah, so, all the ex-coast guard people will tell you all about boating safety in the SOC compared to the US also. And scare us all off of this pastime.

Two questions you never want to hear a pilot say:

1) Where's that sound coming from?

2) OH SH*T!

craiggers - 5-14-2007 at 12:55 AM

I think what Pacifico is refering to avoiding flying a Mexican Airine to save a few bucks. I don't think he's advocating not flying at all. He may be right as to the condition of the used planes in Mexico less qualified pilot and groundcrew. Howerver the last plane I remember crashing enroute to or from Mexico was the alaska air flight that crashed off Oxnard a few years back.

JZ - 5-14-2007 at 09:59 AM

Following that logic maybe people should stop going to Mexico for cheap vacations and cheap real estate because Mexico is less safe overall.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-14-2007 at 10:50 AM

Fact: 98.2 % of Aircraft Accidents are caused by Pilot Error.

Fact; It is still the safest Method of Transportation;

Aero California has indeed had an Accident and it was on a Loreto Flight to LAX. The hot Rod Pilot descended to get under the Altitude Requirement for Approach and Hit a Small Aircraft- Occurred over Cerritos,.

Where in the original post do you see any reference to Mexico or Mexican airlines??? pacificobob said "american and european carriers have one standard....the rest of the worlds carriers....well they are all over the map." There is a whole lot of world out there besides Mexico. While it's true that personal danger could lurk anywhere....cars or boats or walking down any street in the world....IMHO you've taken the original post way out of context!!:( He was a pilot & was simply expressing his personal opinion based on his experience & knowledge.:bounce:

rts551 - 5-14-2007 at 11:03 AM

Oh excuse me. I thought this was a Baja, Mexico Board and the references were to Baja.

JZ DITTO

I for one was ruined by the microscopic bacteria food expert and too much HANDling in the making of tamales in that Carmelita tamale thread. I have eaten there three times since, but it enters my mind each time. She serves her comunity very well and it is her reputation as well as her livelyhood. Last month was there for breakfast at 6:30 a.m
and it was packed. She sells hundreds of tamales everyday.
If that tamale stand was government subsidized I would not eat their either.

Sometimes I just don't want to know- "some folks drink to remember I drink to forget"
ignorance can get expensive:lol:

But seriously, are we not attracted to Mexico because it is a third world nation. You have to keep your gaurd up and exercise caution in everything you do.
Travel, living, recreating and eating in Mexico or anywhere for that matter is an adventure and there are inherent risks. The wealth of information on this board is amazing. I like the acute disection of topics by specialists in their field, you just have to keep it in perspective.

I come to this board and Baja to get away from what I do. Maybe I will be an expert when in the pasture.

Right on!
Too many people, especially elder people, let fear control their life. Fear can snowball and people are afrid to pick their nose for fear they might get a brain hemorrage.
In fact, I don't think we should allow Pompano to go out fishing anymore That SOC is so scary with stingrays and sharks and everything!

Oh, ok... he was just talking about any random airline or country in the world??? Ok, right...

Except for the facts that:

1. This is a Baja/MX based forum
2. There were a whole bunch of posts asking about Mexican airlines and discussing the pricing savings.

I think my 5 year old could have connected those dots... nice try though.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-14-2007 at 02:23 PM

Martyman: I think that you misspelled when you used "Elder", it should have been "These Youngsters"!!
Look at the "Illegal Nets" Thread. The Do gooders are so scared that the "Future Generations" will not have any fish to eat, they would like to cut the nets of all Baja Fisherman!! Boy are they Scared or Not.??
