After 18 years with the Boeing Company; having first-hand knowledge of their high standards in manufacturing & quality control, as well as the fact that when a plane is sold to a foreign country, the purchase price includes human bodies that go with the plane for the sole purpose of teaching the local mechanics how to maintain the plane for a period of time...I'm talking years here, not days or weeks; I totaly agree with pacificobob! There's a reason for the mantra..."If it's not Boeing, I'm not going!" Even a well-built plane in the hands of unskilled or incompetent mechanics or flight crews is scary as hell. Additionally, for ME, any government subsidized plane is one I won't be booking my precious (to me!) butt on! After all, there is a limit to the aerodynamic capabilities of duct tape, spit & baling wire!! If you'd ever heard stories pilots & stews tell amongst themselves, or seen pilots with alcohol on their breath being escorted away at security check points, you'd have a better understanding for what this ex-pilot is talking about! He know what he's talking about!!

Where in the original post do you see any reference to Mexico or Mexican airlines??? pacificobob said "american and european carriers have one standard....the rest of the worlds carriers....well they are all over the map." There is a whole lot of world out there besides Mexico. While it's true that personal danger could lurk anywhere....cars or boats or walking down any street in the world....IMHO you've taken the original post way out of context!! He was a pilot & was simply expressing his personal opinion based on his experience & knowledge.

I for one was ruined by the microscopic bacteria food expert and too much HANDling in the making of tamales in that Carmelita tamale thread. I have eaten there three times since, but it enters my mind each time. She serves her comunity very well and it is her reputation as well as her livelyhood. Last month was there for breakfast at 6:30 a.m
and it was packed. She sells hundreds of tamales everyday.
If that tamale stand was government subsidized I would not eat their either.

But seriously, are we not attracted to Mexico because it is a third world nation. You have to keep your gaurd up and exercise caution in everything you do.
Travel,living,recreating and eating in Mexico or anywhere for that matter is an adventure and there are inherent risks. The wealth of information on this board is amazing. I like the acute disection of topics by specialists in their field, you just have to keep it in perspective.

I come to this board and Baja to get away from what I do. Maybe I will be an expert when in the pasture.
