Inspired by Paula's walk in the desert

vgabndo - 6-5-2007 at 03:45 PM

The walk to the "half way shrine" would be 9k, so we'll drive.

Climbing up to that long awaited view of the SOC

Far in the distance, the Bahia San Nicolas, and just ahead the fishermen's shrine.

There are always candles burning, surrounded by trinkets and a few pesos...

Mi Copilota lights a candle for her recently passed sister and for future good luck. Hey, we're not Catholics, but we also buy the occasional lottery ticket! LOL

Very nice photos.
Any shots of the tight switchback ??
I gotta get there to say hi this year.

vgando.Thanks for the pictures.:)

Paula - 6-5-2007 at 04:18 PM

That's a beauty vgabndo

And you are such a nice person to tell us where it is, rather than being a tease like some other Nomads:dudette:

vgabndo - 6-5-2007 at 04:58 PM

Diver: Here's a bad photo of the location. It makes more sense if you can go to Google Earth and find these coordinates. I can't figure out how to post the Google image here, perhaps someone else can. Pretty easy to ID the switchback!

26 deg. 30' 40.07 N
111 deg. 35' 39.74.W

That is the Bahia Conception to the NNW in the distance.

I can post them but I can't get the size/file size right.

Vgabndo, excellent photos and footpath of Paula. Can't wait to return to Baja come September. These photos are really inspiring.

Paula - 6-5-2007 at 09:28 PM

footpath of Paula...

... it would have been a nice walk, but I was in a different desert.

I am putting San Nicolas on my list of places to go:yes:

vgabndo - 6-5-2007 at 09:41 PM

Well Paula...here are some other reasons to visit the wonderful folk of SN and their surroundings.

From the estuary looking south through the Bastida property to the church in the distance.

vgabndo - 6-5-2007 at 09:43 PM

Here's the church closer up. Much of the work was done by and paid for my a few gringo friends of the community.

The people live all over the arroyo, but most of the concentration of dwellings is on the near side below the Cardon. If you knew where to look, La Ramadita and San Sebastian are along the curve in the distance.

Big cactus on the road in. Great place to visit.

This one shows the beach to the left as the road starts dropping into the aroyo;

Another farther along shows the aroyo ahead;

And if you look to the right, these buildings seemed to be right in the middle of the aroyo. I wonder if they survived the floods ?

I third that...

THIS is the GOOD STUFF... and why Baja Nomad is worth preserving!

Thanks Perry... great photos as always!

What a great thread. Loved ALL the photos. ++Ken++

Crusoe - 9-29-2008 at 05:09 PM

Very, very nice thread, thank you. The long sand dune beaches on the south side of the bay going east out to Pulpito are a very special spot as well..."Talk about getting lost" on a lost coast!!! Doesn't get much better. That is still one of the grandest things about Baja. So many good spots like this area still left for the folks who like it off the beaten path,so to speak. Thanks again for the pics. ++C++:D:D

The houses in the red box are on high ground, as are the ones in the distance directly above them. The white spot was us!
