welcome to the site!

Welcome! There is a wealth of knowledge, experience and help on this site. You will get varied and often opposing opinions on most subjects. If you have been lurking you will begin to see patterns of thought so you can choose the posters you trust. There is also a lot of humor. Jump in and have fun.

Best of luck with your building. I hope you will be able to be present during the building. Read the novel God and Mr. Gomez ;)

Yes! Welcome---we used to consider God and Mr. Gomez as the bible of folks building in Baja..Fun, Fun, Fun

Welcome aboard Sharrone! Where is El Cardonal loacated? I can't find it on my AAA map. Would also be interested in what type of structure you are building.

Thanks everyone. We are building a concrete home. Still trying to decide which builder to use. What we wanted and what we can afford seem to be very different. We will get it done. but it will be smaller, which is better less to clean. We have a wonderful lot with a great view just above the beach. I will keep you posted.

El Cardonal is locatedon the Sea of Cortez north of Los Barrills, south of La Paz. A small town. We have friends that moved there several years ago. Went to visit several times, fell in love and bought a lot.

Things are progressing we have our prelim plans. We still have a lot of decisions to make. I Will try to attach our prelim plans.

Sharrone - 8-14-2007 at 11:48 AM

The attachment did not work. Will have to study up on how to do that.

oldlady - 8-14-2007 at 11:51 AM

Welcome Sharrone! I am a "newbie" at everything here. Many people on this site have been very helpful without even knowing it.
Good luck with your home...patience, persistence, a large crying towel and a sense of humore and you'll get there!

Bob and Susan - 8-14-2007 at 12:04 PM

Good luck with your adventure and please keep us posted.:tumble::)

Sharrone - 8-14-2007 at 12:10 PM

Thanks, we have learned to be very patient. One of the hardest things my husband has gone through is waiting for Title Ins. He is in Real Estate and is not used to things taking so long, with little communication.

Diver - 8-14-2007 at 12:24 PM

Very nice plan !
And I design them for a living !
Thanks for sharing.

bajajudy - 8-14-2007 at 12:52 PM

You caught me at a time when I am thinking what we could have done to make ac not necessary much of the time....awnings over all windows that are not protected by palapas, pergolas, whatever you have planned for that terrace.
We have a palapa over all of our sliders which face the water and surnrises..it is always at least 10 degrees cooler. As the sun rises we have one window that is on our stairs so we cant put an awning so I close this and pull the shade down when I wake up. We had one window unshaded on the sunset side of the house. This year we put a small palapa awning over it and it is amazing how much difference it makes. If you plan to ever be down here full time think about shade....you will not regret it. Trees around the house help a lot too. On must days I can wait until 2 or 3 to put the air on if I close up just when the sun comes up....keep the house as dark as you can. If you want a view, go outside. This is all for the months of august, sept and oct.
Cross ventilation for all the other months. I would guess that in jan, feb and march you will have more than enough wind to cool the house.
I really like your plan. It seems very functional. Think about a window in that office and maybe a bigger one in the master bedroom
That is my dos centavos. I have lived near San Jose for 8 years and think that I kinda understand what it takes to live here. Spend some time on the lot camping if you can and figure out where the sun comes and goes, remembering that it changes through the year
Good luck

bajadock - 8-14-2007 at 01:22 PM

WELCOME to your new paradise. Glad to have more info on house design and construction.

Baja Bernie - 8-14-2007 at 04:33 PM

I believe that you and your husband will find that the period you have entered in Baja will be a pain but that when you look back at it you will find it to be the best and most rewarding time you will ever spend............here or any other place.

I envy you both!

Sure do agree with Judy on that one. We camped on our lot ... luckily had a fifth wheel
on the property, and spent many weeks just walking around and putting our thoughts on
paper.
Welcome to this forum and good luck with all your plans.

Sharrone - 8-15-2007 at 09:36 AM

Thanks again.
We are going to name our new home Casa de Los Colibris. In 2000, our son Kyle died of Melanoma at age 29. The hummingbird and Wings of Hope are the symbol for finding a cure for Melanoma. Kyle and his Dad spent many good times fishing and camping in Baja. He would have loved this place. And yes we will see to it that we have lots of shade, and we will use lots of sun screen.

Diver - 8-15-2007 at 09:53 AM

Sharrone,

What can one say ?
You have wrenched my heart.
Best wishes to you and your "peace" of Baja.

Eli - 8-15-2007 at 02:27 PM

Sharrone,

We are more or less neighbors, my home is in Buenos Aires, on the road to your new home.

Wishing you all the luck in the world in your forthcoming adventure building your home. As I always used to tell clients; If you are going to spend all that money, you might as well have fun while you are doing it".

Hummingbird are such a delight, and also have great significene for me. When ever I see them, they bring me great hope, comfort and joy as I believe that my father spirits flies with them. The Aztecs believe that colibri's are spirits of departed warriors carring messages from the Gods, (me too!).

Suerte Simpre, Sara de La Vos

Sharrone - 8-15-2007 at 02:48 PM

Eli, I hope we meet. We are going down on Oct 16th for a week, staying with friends in El Cardonal.

Eli - 8-15-2007 at 06:32 PM

Sharonne, I expect one day we will meet although I doubt that it will be during your Oct. 16th trip.

The present plan is that I return home to Los Barriles after Nov. 5th. I am hoping to be in Oaxaca for Day of the Dead, Nov. 1st and 2nd. It is a photograhers dream, and my favorite place to celebrate this holiday, way more fun than Christmas for me. I love remembering and embracing all those who's love has nutured me and have now gone on to the other side.

Saludos, Sara

Sharrone - 10-14-2007 at 11:20 AM

Two more days, and then we are off to El Cardonal. We thought we were going to see our finished plans on this trip, but it is not going to happen. Our architect in Los Barriles has broken her leg. We hope she is healing, and will go to see her. I really have no idea how long it will take to get everything approved after the plans are finished. We will lean to wait. This may be hard for my husband. I have told him to just relax, but it is hard for him. Anyway this is where we are on our journey. We will get there.

Saludos, Sharron

Gnome-ad - 10-15-2007 at 05:38 PM

Welcom, Sharrone ~

God and Mr. Gomez is a must for anyone buying and building in Baja - especially someone with prior real estate expereince ... it translates a bit differently here. Patience, patience and more patience. We have been living in our garage/bodega for a while. I had a very specific idea about how I wanted to build on the property, but have realized things about the breeze and the sun that changed the plans. Then, when we finally made more decisions, it was the cost that sent me back to the drawing board again. Poco a poco it will get done.

Your drawing looks lovely and liveable. Best wishes on your new adventure. We are not far from you - Todos Santos. Hope we will meet one day.

Eli - 10-15-2007 at 11:28 PM

Gnome-ad, much better to discover such issues as you just named while still on paper and not yet in concrete, good timing, sounds like you are right on schedule to me.

Gnome-ad - 10-16-2007 at 05:04 PM

Eli ~ I sure hope so!

The shade issues mentioned earlier are something we had not dealt with before since we lived on a treed lot in Oregon! We had more problem getting some sun!

This year in Todos Santos we installed a pergola on the southeast side and "eyelashes" on the northwest. Now all we have to do is get rid of that HUGE metal door on the southwest end that acts like a radiator! Have a shelter over it, and wood on the inside along with a wall of plastic storage bins in front, but it still heats up! Live and learn.
