BajaNomad

I had my truck stolen last night.

Minnow - 6-30-2007 at 12:44 PM

Last night some dirt balls broke into my vacation home in Baja and made off with a few minor things, but they managed to get my 89 ford bronco also. It is an Eddie Bauer edition, tan top with maroon body. There are lots of these down there but this one has a Flesh Gear sticker on the front window and a Baja.net sticker on the rear window. It is basically a piece of mierda , but I need it to launch my boat. If you see it on Mex 1 please run the bastard off the road and have a good laugh.

I hope you all are having a better day.

bajalou - 6-30-2007 at 12:55 PM

Too bad Tom - will keep a watch out for it.

Minnow - 6-30-2007 at 01:02 PM

Thanks Lou. This is my third robbery in three months. It's getting to be too much. Last month they got my water pump and some motorcycle parts. Before that it was the tools out of my shed. They seem to be getting more brazen, probably because they know nobody is at the house. I think it is time to go mobile. It is harder to hit a moving target.

bajalou - 6-30-2007 at 01:12 PM

Sometimes the find a place they think is easy pickins and keep coming back. A friend just south of San Felipe has had the same experience - a jeep, a VW Thing (really cherry) generators, TV - you name it. Too bad

DENNIS - 6-30-2007 at 01:22 PM

Aw crap, Tom.........That sucks. Adíos Bronco.

bajajudy - 6-30-2007 at 01:22 PM

bajamigo - 6-30-2007 at 01:52 PM

Minnow, this may be tantamount to locking the barn after the horse is gone, but there's a guy in Cantu named David whom you might pay a few pesos a week to keep an eye on things for you. If you were at the Spay & Neuter clinic last Feb., he's the guy I hired to stay at the ejido salon overnight. You can reach him through Carlos or Norma at UPS.

So sorry. I have had 2 cars stolen down here

Keri - 6-30-2007 at 01:57 PM

and our house in San Quintin was broken into a couple of months ago and many things taken. Makes you feel real bad. So sorry you have to go thru this. I understand how you feel,k

Minnow - 6-30-2007 at 02:01 PM

Information is starting to come in. The main suspect is a guy who used to do work for me, and is a neighbor. Dennis and Vince, since you two are close to the action, please keep an eye out for my Pizza truck. The truck is no big deal, but I would love to put the thief where he belongs. It might even spare you two a similar fate.

Iflyfish - 6-30-2007 at 02:07 PM

grrrrrr

sorry amigo

DENNIS - 6-30-2007 at 02:09 PM

What are you going to do, Tom? Do you have other wheels?

Sharksbaja - 6-30-2007 at 02:45 PM

Damn petty desparados. Lo siento Minnow. They got my old BBQ salvaged from the flood. Pathetic.

David K - 6-30-2007 at 03:02 PM

Bummer Tom... Sorry the low life scum found and took your rig!

On your next rig, try using a different sticker... I will save a 'got baja?' one for you!:light:

bajamigo - 6-30-2007 at 03:30 PM

Happy to, Tom. Hope I can help.

Lets keep everything in perspective. There is zillions of those Viva Baja stickers around. I may be the only one with a Baja.net one.
:lol::lol::lol:

No, I got plenty of wheels Dennis. That truck was the prima beach launcher though. Now I am afraid it will be bringing in pangas that have something other than fish in them. You figure it out.:lol:

sylens - 6-30-2007 at 04:12 PM

my sympathies to you on your loss. we too will keep an eye out. who knows, the scumbag may be driving it around town... i really hope you get it back and that he will face legal consequences. i know, not likely. still, not impossible.

bajadock - 6-30-2007 at 04:23 PM

A truckload of my IRISH LUCK sent your way, Minnow!

vacaenbaja - 6-30-2007 at 05:03 PM

I really loved baja back when the only inhabitants were the ones that were honest and hard working enough to want to
even be in a place where scatching out a living is such hard work.
Like the lady said "Bad road, good people. Good road
bad people".
There are now GPS tracking systems that are quite small and
can be put in cars. Most likely more for the satisfaction of
finding your car before the cops ever do. Even once you do
"zero in on it" I would bet that the officials would still be a bit
standoffish on approching the alleged offender without any
"hard evidence" After all he could have just found the car abandoned on the road.
Now I know why in the old west horsethieves
and rustlers were shot or hung. It fosters an attitude for total disregard of the law....and if you get the right guys it stops repeat offenders!

Iflyfish - 6-30-2007 at 07:50 PM

vacaendbaja

What do you call the gps device you mention? Never heard of it. But I don't own a Iphone either.

Dave - 6-30-2007 at 11:44 PM

what's the plate #?

Does it have oversized tires?

Got a pic to post?

Bajagypsy - 7-1-2007 at 08:55 AM

That truly sucks. So sorry for your misfortune.

Hook - 7-1-2007 at 09:03 AM

The only type of GPS device that would have helped Tom in this situation is one that is actively monitored by a satellite system, like a Lo-Jac system. Pricey, and requires a monthly fee.

The other types of GPS devices that have become popular are ones you can hide on cars but you must be able to retrieve the info off of it by accessing the device again. That's hard to do when you have no idea where your car is. This is the type that is becoming popular with parents interested in where their teens have been while driving.

DENNIS - 7-1-2007 at 11:58 AM

What about On-Star? Does any of this stuff do any good below the border?

Maybe Dennis...not sure, but to easy to disable.
You need something that is not obvious so they won't try to disable it. There should be something that turns on to transmit, when you turn off the key...GPS satellites do not receive...cell can transmit...maybe on-star is a hidden cell...hell what is another fee when I pay so much for insurance now. Bet there is a insurance discount maybe.
I should have read the whole post before jumping in:!:

Onstar no trabaja en Mexico...

vacaenbaja - 7-1-2007 at 01:03 PM

This is one of a few systems available. You will have to research for coverage in baja etc but yhe technology has been out for years just not commercialy available until recently. http://earthtrak.com/
THe ones in the USA may be used in conjuntion with land based cellphone nets. I think that the ones in Mexico make use of the same satillites that are used by the major sat cell phone
providers, just like your sat radio, fairly good coverage thruout Baja
Do a web search and see whats out there.

Installing a Kill Switch

drzura - 7-1-2007 at 01:04 PM

Do you think installing a kill switch on a vehicle is a good idea?? If so, I may install one..

vacaenbaja - 7-1-2007 at 01:49 PM

Kill switches are good to keep the amatuers at bay. If they really want your rig they will just tow it. Cut off the fuel pump power. Coils used to be the easy way on older cars,
but too well known and easy to get to. It is kind of an inconvience, but on older ignitions on cars that are to be left
alone for a few hours , the removal of the
rotor was a good stop. With luck, the rotor is not easily available at the parts store and hopefully, if that is the case, you don't loose the one you removed when its time to go!

Bob and Susan - 7-1-2007 at 05:32 PM

just insure it for theft...:light:

why worry about a silly car

car theft is horrible in the los angeles area
and the ONLY thing that will work is replacement insurance

DENNIS - 7-1-2007 at 05:39 PM

I think PepBoys should design an owner-operated RC car bomb, good for fifty miles.

Mango - 7-1-2007 at 06:40 PM

Sorry to hear about your problems with theft.

I'm not sure if this will help you find you old rig; but, its worth a look since I think most cars sold here are in Northern Mexico/Baja.

Ok, so you've got one of these and your vehicle is stolen and you go on the internet and it's in Mexico. Now what? You attempt to retrieve it by:

1-convincing local police to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

2-paying local police to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

3-paying members of an El Salvadoran gang to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

4-kissing the investment and the monthly fees goodbye and buying another car.

These devices only work where law enforcement works.

Sounds like pizza insurance didn't work in this case.........

Newer vehicles don't get chopped

Yours, mine or Minnow's?

Minnow - 7-19-2007 at 09:12 AM

Thanks for the sentiments Ken. I just got back from cleaning up the mess the banditos left. Seems the neighbors caught the perps in action and called the police. Who incredibly showed up just as they were taking off in the truck. Too bad for me though the police were in a little car. The chase lasted about half a mile up the mountain where the car could go no further. One of my neighbors even went after them on a horse, but it was very foggy that night and the horse only liked to walk sideways. true story.

Wow, Runner!
That bad luck seems like it had a little help.

A little help, for sure

thebajarunner - 7-21-2007 at 12:41 PM

Place across the street was a "manufactured home" the guy moved onto three acres last year.
Truly buttugly.
Anyway, they were on vacation and a so-called handyman ripped off the contents, then set the place on fire, then hung around to "help" the firefighters.
Someone looked in the back seat of his car and he was off to the cross bar hotel.... $50k bail.

Next door, 5 year old was messing with some leftover Fourth fireworks and set the 100 year old place ablaze.
Flames 100 feet in the air, second floor dropped down into the main floor,
Was too hot to stand by our side window and we are a good 150 feet away from their house.
I have 51 redwood trees along the fence line, some are 40 and 50 feet tall, was surely afraid they would torch up, then things would have gotten seriously ugly.

(those are my stories, I am sticking with them)

Cypress - 7-21-2007 at 02:37 PM

bajarunner. :) Some people aren't really what you'd call neighbors.:(

Minnow - 7-21-2007 at 04:14 PM

I did not get my truck back. I did go over to thank my neighbor who "chased" the perps on his horse. Strangely I noticed several things laying around his house that seemed familiar. Some of them I know were in my storage shed at one time, but one thing in particular caught my attention. A brand new 16 oz can of WD40. Two cans like these were missing from my house. As a note, I have never seen 16 oz cans of WD40 in baja, you know the kind that says 4oz free on the bottom. Only the normal 12 oz size. I had bought mine in the states. The same guy told a strange story of hearing My truck starting up, coming over and confronting the bandit, then running home to phone police. When he ran back he hid around wall at the end of my driveway and threw a rock through the window as the truck passed. I should post the pictures of what the back of our house looked like. The thieves must have been at it for hours. They did quite a bid of damage just trying to get through the security bars, then they tossed the place on the inside. I don't know how, but they found my stash of extra keys, so they had keys to everything. Oh, one more interesting note, the boat key, the only boat key, was also in the group of keys they found. The same neighbor who I mentioned above says he wants me to take him fishing. I say, I have to have a key made for the boat. Low and behold he produces the key to the boat and says he found it in the driveway and the thief must have dropped it.

Want to trade neighbors?

thebajarunner - 7-21-2007 at 04:34 PM

Straight up, no extras, no draft choices,
you get mine, I take yours.

(and I think we both will lose)

lo siento por el troque......

espero que lo regreso, muy pronto

DENNIS - 7-21-2007 at 04:36 PM

Minnow ---

Sounds like you owe your concerned neighbor a favor. Maybe, during the winter on a cold night, you can light his house on fire so he can sleep in comfort.

Minnow - 7-21-2007 at 04:50 PM

Did I mention that the same concerned neighbor also keeps a good eye on the Mini Motel in front of Sharkeys bar. He has been caught three times breaking into the place. I also found a cigarette butt inside my house of the same variety that he smokes, and when my water pump was stolen last month there were two butts left where the pump used to be. The cops know all about him, they say they have to catch him in the act. Dennis, if I was a vengeful person I might have to take your advise.

DENNIS - 7-21-2007 at 04:56 PM

Jeezo.....

This guy is starved for attention. Do you know anybody who can give him some?

Maybe you SHOULD take him fishing at night sometime... way way out far..

How well does he swim?

Minnow - 7-21-2007 at 08:48 PM

In my belief system God will take care of these things. You may call it anything you like. Carma, Feng shuai, natural law. The end result is I don't care. Retribution is counter productive. I was in a position where I had many options open. I knew what was going on in the area. Reports are over 20 houses robbed in La Joya last year. I left nothing in my Vacation home I could not afford to lose. Truck and boat included. I have always operated on the walk away principle in Mexico, and always will. One only needs to look to Punta Estero to realize all the broken hearts and dreams. I will not make that mistake. Call me a crazy fisherman, but I still love BAJA.

On a happier note. I moved most of my things to Puerto Penasco. I have equal access to the SOC and my home in LV. Plus, My wifes family is now very near by.:bounce: Viva Sonora:lol:

Bumping this up to the top b e c a u s e being the helpful neighbors that we are, we kept an eye out for Minnow's vehicle while we were in Baja for the summer.

We remembered the important detail of the bajadotnet sticker and that Minnow's vehicle might be the only one in Punta Banda sporting such a thing, SO....

We may have found it, or them, so we took photos to be sure before sounding off the alarm.

The first possibility is now being used as the Campo La Jolla trash truck.

We tried to get a closer look, but the stench from the flounder on the fish stringer was just too much...

I wanted to ask if they would be willing to trade the fish and stringer, but Dern put his foot down on that one.

So we decided to take a break and head to the beach for some fresh air and to re-group and what do we find????

This young man trying to make a quick get away with yet another possibility.

So Tom, we did our best and came up with only two sets of wheels that might fit your bill.

All kidding aside, I hope it all works out for you in Cantu and your new spot on the Cortez side.

Tom - it's making me sort of nervous to have a house on the same street as yours. We were there briefly in June and all was well. The neighbor that watches it has proven himself to be honest and he and Carlos keep close watch over it. Hopefully all remains the same. And hope your luck improves. Are you guys there full-time now? We are living in Boise and only get down there occasionally. Probably won't be December until we get there again. Say hi to your sweet wife for us. Dave & Marilyn
