Cabo in September?

yorm - 7-10-2007 at 08:19 AM

Hello,

Two friends and I would like to fly into Cabo San Lucas in mid-September, rent a car, and spend five days exploring the cape region. But I've read that September can be a bad month to be there due to the rain and storms. Should we be concerned about this? How likely is bad weather at that time of year?

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Jim

like everything in life the odds are 50/50. it will be crappy or it won't. it is the peak hurricane month, but hey, what are the odds your dates will have a hurricane go by, or directly overhead?

50/50:light:

edit: i'd go anyway. it'll be fun no matter what. BTW, let us know when you get back which 50% you got!

Thanks for the reply.

Let's suppose we do catch a hurricane. Do they affect the whole region? Could we spend a few hours driving to a different part of the cape and enjoy better weather? Do they typically last for hours or days?

Thanks again!

Bill Collector - 7-10-2007 at 08:55 AM

You would have plenty of time to leave the area before a storm came. There have been times when they sit right off the coast and we get rain for 3 -4 days. Come down enjoy yourself. If you do get the 50% with a storm heading our way you can figure it out then.

bajajudy - 7-10-2007 at 08:59 AM

Hiya
Driving can become a problem as bridges and roads wash out if it is a big storm. And if it is a huge storm you could be stuck here for up to a week Driving away from the storm is not an option.
Some friends of mine just emailed me and wanted to come Sept 25 and I told them no, dont come...hottest, most humid, blah blah. It is definitely the worst month to plan a trip but I like Woody's attitude.
Hey, the fishing is good and the surfing can be great.

Cypress - 7-10-2007 at 09:22 AM

yorm. Be prepared to add 1/4 more $ for the trip.:) Things cost more in the Cabo area.:) Storms are a hit or miss thing, you know it's gonna be hot. :)Have a great trip and keep us posted.

Osprey - 7-10-2007 at 09:23 AM

Most storms start out hundreds of miles south of here as tropical depressions. We all track them for days, weeks as they go west or come north to effect the cape. Many times, what you cannot dream of can become a one in a lifetime series of accidents that find you safely home with memories no normal vacation could give you. Go For It. I've met loads of folks who got stuck down here with a verifiable dead bang excuse while they were a week late getting back to the house, the job, the hum of the drum stuff they left behind.

yorm - 7-10-2007 at 09:26 AM

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Sounds like we'd be better off pushing the trip back to October (if we can). That's a bummer though cuz I'm really excited about this trip!

:D

summary...

islandmusicteach - 7-10-2007 at 10:51 AM

let's see...
woody: "i'd go anyway" :bounce:
bill collector: "come down enjoy yourself" :tumble:
baja judy: "i like woody's attitude"
cypress: "have a great trip" :bounce:
osprey: "go for it" :tumble:
...and...
yorm: "Sounds like we'd be better off pushing the trip back"

So much for the experts :( :moon:

osoflojo - 7-10-2007 at 01:15 PM

I would add a "Go for it" remember the worst rain in Cabo history was in November and it was not even a hurricane.

capitolkat - 7-10-2007 at 01:41 PM

I've been going for 30 years and this september I'll be back--if there's a hurricane brewing I'll either still go or figure if I should stay home on the day set for departure.

This is a classic example of how "baja people" are different. Baja people would rather wait out a raging chubasco on the east cape than spend a week in Vegas! Obviously, us baja people have determined that yorm is not a real baja person (not yet, anyway). So come on, yorm! As Jerry Garcia said..."get off the couch and go have a look around"! Go ahead and rruin your life by catching that damn baja fever! If you come, soon after getting back you will be obsessed with such quandries as ....suburban or tacoma....Bilstein or Rancho....BFG's or Scorpion's....tent trailer or pick up shell....longboard or shortboard...troll or bottom fish......sigh......so many questions, so little time.

805gregg - 7-10-2007 at 02:13 PM

When in Cabo check out the tall curbs, they are there for a reason. I was in Cabo 1 time when it rained in the mountains it didn't take but about 30-45 minutes and the streets were full up to the tops of the curbs, about 40 min later it was gone.

yorm - 7-10-2007 at 02:15 PM

haha - you guys are awesome.

You've about got me convinced that it would be a shame to visit any time other than hurricane season.

:)

and, ahem, tecate vs. pacifico....:?:

gnukid - 7-10-2007 at 02:48 PM

To the point, September benefits from the heated waters of summer, there can be waves on both coasts, it's generally good fishing, there are often afternoon breezes in the Cabo region and to the north on both coasts which help cool the weather. September has a feeling like no other month besides the foreboding (real) fears of hurricane. Now don't get me started on October... in la paz we say its the most horrible weather of the year with temperature changes of 40 degrees f in a day... You get to complain you are freezing cold in 72 degree weather?

tripledigitken - 7-10-2007 at 03:16 PM

Yorm,

If you decide on October try to plan it to avoid the Bisby Fishing Tournment. It is filled to the brim then. And if fishing is your pleasure try to get there before the Bisby, or a week or two later.

Have fun.

Ken

yorm - 7-10-2007 at 04:15 PM

We're coming in from Chicago Sept 11-16.

Woo hoo!

Thanks everyone!

woody with a view - 7-10-2007 at 04:23 PM

let us know how it went (all the details) when you get back...

Hook - 7-10-2007 at 04:59 PM

There IS a reason why you got such good airfare and hotel rates, yorm.

Yes, the adventure of a lifetime could be in the making.

More likely is a constant feeling of being totally exhausted by 10am each day from the way the humidity and heat will sap you.

Is that the kind of vacation you're looking for?

Some of the locals have the advantage of slipping slowing into the heat and humidity over the preceeding months. You will hit the wall, running.

Plan to come at a time when you can enjoy the Cape from outside an air-conditioned whatever. You really cant acclimate in four days.

yorm - 7-10-2007 at 05:25 PM

Well, thanks for the warning but the tickets are booked.

We plan to do a lot of driving/exploring and probably three nights of camping. Hopefully we'll catch a break from the heat at higher elevations...

Can anyone recommend a vehicle? Is a 4x4 a good idea?

Camping............in September.........at the Cape...........at "higher elevations".

Are we talking Cape of Good Hope here?

Carry lots of water and cases of Arrid Extra Dry.

tripledigitken - 7-10-2007 at 07:51 PM

Bob,

Thanks for correcting me on the spelling.

I didn't want a first time visitor to Cabo to hit town during that tournament if they wanted to go fishing for the first time.

Ken

madwrktodos - 7-10-2007 at 08:04 PM

If there is any way at all you can change the time of your visit I encourage you to do so. My fist visit to southern Baja was in September and I hated it - hagted it!!! God awful heat and humidity. It is a miracle I ever agreed to come back. We stayed in our hotel room with the a/c on and coulnd't even see out for the steamed up windows. No fun. No way you could possibly camp. This is a wonderful part of the world but not in September. Would you go to Quebec in January? We now live her fulltime but always - always find somewhere to go for September!!!!!!!!!!!

A suggestion

bajaguy - 7-10-2007 at 08:20 PM

Buy a big umbrella and two large ice chests....fill the ice chests with ice and Pacifico, sit under umbrella, drink Pacifico. If the umbrella blows away, grab the ice chests and find shelter.

osoflojo - 7-11-2007 at 05:25 AM

Dont get scared off, stick to your guns. Yes it will be hot but take the appropriate precautions, drink a lot of fluids (of course), look for a shady bar or a bar with shade and enjoy............suerte.

Exciting Times

My personel experience is that Cabo San Lucas is a fun place to be during tourneys, especially as the boats return for the weigh-in each day... I was there for the Billfishing Tournement last October and had a great time .... And at the Marina Sol at dinnertime the restaurant would be filled people bringing in that special catch for Sashimi .... The only way to have it fresher is to do it on the boat ~~~~~~~~ :bounce: Don't think I would want to llive in CSL, but it can be an exiting place to visit. CaboRon

osoflojo - 7-16-2007 at 08:38 AM

It's a great place to live, regaredless of what the Cabo-haters say...........and you are right about tourney time and weigh in events etc. I am not a fisherman but I still enjoy the energy..........

A Non-Cabo Hater ?

:bounce: Osoflojo, How refreshing to hear something positive about Cabo San Lucas !! After reading so many negative posts on this Forum, I was beginning to question my own memories.... I'll admit I have not [after the day's adventure's] stayed up late enough to partake of the Cabo night-life so I wouldn't know what to think of that experience .... but I do enjoy all of the outdoor activities. The only thing I really HATE :fire: is the endless pestering of the 'Time Share Salesmen ', who are (in my opinion) barely a step above Carney Hucksters and I really, really, really wish they would be marched over the sand falls in the bay. :fire: And no, I will not recind the previous comment....... in spite of the ire which I now expect to be directed this way. CaboRon :lol: On my last visit, I was actually offered my choice of hookers if I would attend the presentation; I demurred on sanitation grounds.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

My point about visiting during the Tourney was very specific. If they wanted to go fishing that would not be a good time, as most boats are taken, and there will be extreme fishing pressure during the tourney.

If you like it crowded, and the excitement by all means. Not my bag. Last time I was there during the Bisbee there were 3 cruise ships in port also, too many people for this Baja Traveler.

osoflojo - 7-16-2007 at 12:28 PM

You are right Ron, it is not the same place either of us were attracted to many years ago but it does not have to be what so many others can not see beyond. I still hang with my friends from 20 years ago and have not been in the Cabo Wabo since the day it opened. FYI, the time share crap has abaited considerably since the early/mid 90's.Thank god..............
