Tuesday afternoon we headed down Hwy. 1 and soon came to the El Tomatal Army Checkpoint... Just a wave through southbound, coming north we got to
watch the boys do a tapping inspection, listeng to all the truck's hollow areas... in case they were not hollow!
Next, we came to Villa Jesus Maria to fill up and get some tamales from Carmelita!
Down the road to the Eagle Monument on the state border where we parked in front of the Desert Inn (formerly Las Pintas, formerly El Presidente)
Hotel.
Here's Baja Angel at Paralelo 28...

South of the Eagle Monument is the officials station where 20 pesos is collected for the undercar bug spray (Roy claimed it was water) and another
official walked up to my window, asked if we were American and asked to see our tourist cards. He looked at mine and didn't want to look at
Elizabeth's... as I was pulling it out of her passport.
The road forks 2 miles south, and we go left for Vizcaino... We will check out Guerrero Negro (the right fork) on our way north.
The next section of highway is long and straight and PATROLLED by the federal highway patrol!!! We saw them going south and again heading north, days
later... Both times writing tickets or chatting with drivers!
At Vizcaino we take the paved road right (Asuncion, Tortugas)...
Here the highway crosses an arm of Scammon's Lagoon (Ojo de Liebre)...

Up ahead new pavement into Asuncion is being laid by road building crews, but nobody can move this sand dune it seems?
David K - 8-1-2007 at 10:24 PM
Here's the signed junction... The new pavement on the Asuncion leg is blocked, so we drive next to it for several miles...
Vizcaino (Hwy. 1) to The Asuncion/ Tortugas split is 46.6 miles.

Hey,nice place, except for the Modelorama...we were all pretty sad to see it appear as the rumor was it would be a nice restaurant...boo hoo...the
thing is, this place sells beer for a bit cheaper than the ma and pa outfits in town which has seriously affected their little businesses. Plus it
looks and IS a chain store...yuck...but they do have an awesome selection of suds if ya like Pacifico beer.

Wow, these photos are fantastic. I hope my cabover camper can make it in and all around this area in October! And, then we want to take it down to
