im not at liberty to discuss this MATTER at this time.

I can't think of a more important subject than an armed robbery in Mulege, At least for the people already there or the ones like me who want to move there.

When something like that happens in a small Mexican town, everybody knows someone who knows something. Having said that, it is not safe to comment while it is getting sorted out. At this point, it is still rumor.

Criticism only makes matters worse in the near aftermath. Criticism can have the police and politicians working against you. That's my take, anyway.

Bruce doesn't live there anymore

The old man who was hacked to death, and also the flood, got more than enough coverage here on this board and also in the media. We are still talking about the flood here on the Bajanomad and also among ourselves, and there has been a real outpouring of help. The media coverage usually doesn't happen until one or some of us actually send the info to an individual reporter. Then it gets really worked, often too late to be of much help.

I know it is frustrating that news comes slowly when you are up north and need to make decisions of your own. If you chill a little bit, ask questions without criticizing and be patient, maybe the folk in Mulege will welcome you. Don't move here with a 'tude, Dude!

On August 18th I woke up around 06:00 am to find my front door wide open. I awoke my wife and we started to look around. We found the front window had been pried open and immediately noticed our new car of 8 weeks was gone. Looking at our key rack in the kitchen , every key was taken. Keys to our quads, all the doors in my home, my pick-up keys, all gone. We did not hear the “bandito” because we were sleeping with the A/C on in our closed, but not locked bedroom.The guard that watches Don Johnson’s’ place walked up and told me the “bandito” had paid then a visit also breaking a large sliding glass door to enter. This woke him up and when he put a flashlight on the guy he fired a shotgun at him. Looking at my neighbors house (who has window bars) noticed the chimney cap was off. The “bandito” had tied a garden hose around the chimney and used it to lower himself into the house. He had ransacked the house and broke out a very small window way up high and climbed out. My other neighbor with the big German Shepard, also got a visit the “bandito” just let the dog out and went in. reporting your car stolen is a complicated process in Mexico as you have to report it to the local police, the federal police and my insurance company.
On August 29th Mulege Police notified me at 08:00 pm that my car had been recovered in Insurgentes and I needed to go to the Ministerial Publico in Mulege at 10:00 am the following day. On August 30th I met with the attorney and got all the information on what I needed to claim the car (3 copies of everything) and that I needed to be in Insurgentes first thing in the morning as I only had 48 hours to claim the car FROM THE TIME I WAS NOTFIED IT HAD BEEN RECOVERED.
On August 31st I got a friend to drive me three and a half hours to Insugentes to the Ministerial Publico’s office arriving at 09:00am and waited for them to open. About 09:30 he showed up and the conversation began. I told him I was there to get my car and handed him all the papers I was told I had to have. He told me the car had some damage, one window was broke out and the ignition was broken. Then came “the big one”, he told me I could not have the car because I did not claim the car 48 hours FROM THE TIME THE ARREST WAS MADE, and that the car had been turned over to the courts and was now in the hands of a judge. He then asked me for a reward, I asked for what, he said for getting my car back, I said I don’t have my car back, BUT, if you get my car HERE and I can take it back home, I would give him a reward. He told me NO you are too late. I then got to see them load the “bandito” (a local druggie from Mulege) into the car and off to Cereso ( Santa Rosalia prison). I called the insurance agent from Qualitas and came down to the station but he either could not get them to budge. Instead we ran all over town trying to find out about the car and what it would take to get it released to me “THE OWNER”. We got the run around all day, ALL DAY! And then I was told I needed to come back Monday, trying to explain to anyone the hassle of that was useless. Well being very angry (but never showing it) I tried to think of any options I might have, what the “F” was I going to do?
Well, trusting the insurance adjuster from Qualitas we came up with a solution, as I figured they were just going to run me back and forth until I gave up on the car. A trip to the “Notary “ and $100 later my Qualitas agent had a legal paper to speak on my behalf on the recovery of the car, and that the car was to be released to him. Well he has been to the judge three times. it look like I will have the car maybe by the end of this week********** No it took 4 weeks and about 8 visits for me to recover my auto that was now minus the battery.

Glad you FINALLY got it Marv! i could hardly believe the story when you told it to me privately a few weeks ago.

what a bunch of caca..........just think, only a car and what a run a round.........some legal system, huh.........
and i get crap here for suggesting that real property "investments" might be tinged with a hint of risk!

unfortunatly once the vehicle was recovered by the police it is no longer a option, it is no longer stolen it was recovered. i wish it would have been that easy !
so yes the key rack is no longer in the kitchen, there are bars going on the windows and we are alot more careful of where wallets and purses are before going to bed. this could have been alot worse, we are just glad it is finally over with.

So, if the perp had managed to get away with the crime for 48 hours, would his sentence have been commuted?

Simply amazing! What is this law that states that you must recover it within 48 hours from the crime? That could easily render any insurance claim for theft completely useless.

And the cops tried to shake you down, to boot................
