BARNEY IS HOME!

bajabound2005 - 8-30-2007 at 06:56 PM

Tuesday morning (8/28) our very adorable beagle went missing at about 9:30 am when one of our not-so-adorable neighbors set off a huge firecracker (M80???? is that what they call those things that give everyone heart attacks?) -- fireworks do scare him and he obviously bolted. Our other 2 dogs came into the house but Barney did not. Around noon I noticed that I had not seen him in a while and we went searching. Found him no where. We've searched the roads and are confident he has not been hit by a car. We now think someone may have grabbed him up (he's very cute and very friendly and trusting...) We are in Rancho Packard between Punta Banda and La Bufadora - we've heard of dogs going missing from this area and ending up as far at Ensenada which is not a reach. Barney is a neutered male, microchipped, collared and has an ID tag. He's a BIG beagle ~45 pounds - not fat but tall for a beagle. We've posted a $500 reward (flyers everywhere and we are getting calls but nothing has panned out yet). Be on the lookout for our Barn-barn!

Is there a phone number to call?

Diver - 8-30-2007 at 07:07 PM

I know just the feeling.
Our dogs have dissappeared for days at a time and you never know.
So far we have been lucky.

All our hopes that you will be also.

.

Bajagypsy - 8-30-2007 at 07:18 PM

Oh my heart goes out to you, I hope you find your dog soon.

bajadogs - 8-30-2007 at 07:51 PM

Fireworks really screw up a dogs world. Best of luck to you. Barney is a handsome one.

bajabound2005 - 8-30-2007 at 08:14 PM

oops! meant to include phone #s! Local number is 646 152 0090 and our US cell is 619 546 3287! And of course, always available on line here at Nomad!

Paulina - 8-30-2007 at 08:17 PM

Vince and Kathleen,

We are really sorry to hear about Barney and hope that you find him soon. The longest Cora has gone missing at our place is 9 hrs. We can't imagine how you guys are feeling right now. Our thoughts are with you, and with Barney for a safe return.

Paulina y Dern y Cody

bajabound2005 - 8-30-2007 at 08:32 PM

muchas gracias, Paulina! Sorry we didn't get back with Cody this week with grandkids! What can I say - they were true SLUGS. Most days couldn't get them out of their PJs! They were really tired after their big road trip from Portland. They did Boise, Salt Lake, New Mexico, the Grand Canyon, Disneyland. Legoland - then arrived here dog-tired! But their dog, Bert, enjoyed it all and had the best vacation of his life hanging at our place with complete freedom - something he's never known and never left our eyesight! Maybe Barney was feeling jealous...

Minnow - 8-30-2007 at 08:41 PM

That stinks. One thing I find weird about Mexican Culture is that they will pick up dogs that don't look, well, Mexican. Did he have a tag>? They got one of mine one time. The neighbors saw a van stop and pick it up. A couple of days later we heard something at the front gate, sure enough it was her. She has never wandered since. I wish you the same luck.

toneart - 8-30-2007 at 08:47 PM

I hate firecrackers and I can't bear to think of a loved innocent dog missing. Please consider your signiture line and keep the faith.

docsmom - 8-30-2007 at 10:03 PM

BBound, I'm in AZ now, not Baja. Wish I could help. Those big kabooms suck! Everyone please keep a look out for Barney. We know he wants to be home in the loving arms of his family!

DianaT - 8-30-2007 at 10:04 PM

Firecrakers :fire::fire::mad: One of our dogs freaks, so we understand what happened. ---Dang, it is awful and we sure hope Barney comes home!

The reward should help, we hope

bajabound2005 we are Looking for your dog. My Daughter is working at La Bufadora and I have been doing work in the Punta Banda aria.

Mexitron - 8-31-2007 at 07:30 AM

Sorry to hear about this...I had a cat who disappeared after the local firework show but came back two days later--hope your dog does the same!

bajadock - 8-31-2007 at 07:36 AM

V+K, eyes peeled during my regular outdoor excursions.

sylens - 8-31-2007 at 11:42 AM

our baja dog, negrita, goes berserk with the g**d**n firecrackers too. i do too. :fire: i am so sorry to hear they spooked barney.

our thoughts are with you and we are hoping barney comes home safe and sound and SOON!!!

Cypress - 8-31-2007 at 11:53 AM

Had a boxer once that would snap up small firecrackers like popcorn. Didn't seem to bother her when they went off in her mouth. Was weird to see fire crackers popping off in a dogs mouth. One of those surrealastic things from way back when. Needless to say, we didn't do any fireworks around her.:tumble:

Debra - 8-31-2007 at 12:54 PM

I sooooooooo hope you get Barney back! He's beautiful! D**n those fireworks! :fire:

Sharksbaja - 8-31-2007 at 01:07 PM

Keep the faith. I lost(was stolen) my dog in Mulege for almost a week after he took a walk . The reward and posters all over the place got him back. Sorry for you. It sucks!

bajajudy - 8-31-2007 at 02:56 PM

What a cutie! I sure hope that you get him back.
When we were in Rosarito for one of the book signings, staying in an RV park south of Pyramid, we had to sleep with both of our dogs in the bed with us after the saturday night fireworks there....this was in a cab over almost double bed. It was cozy. I was afraid that Eta was going to have a heart attack.

BTW...my first dog was a beagle. I named him after a book I had read...."A Beagle Named Bertrum" They are cool dogs.

bajabound2005 - 9-1-2007 at 06:37 PM

This is nothing more than a bump! Barney is still gone! We are heartbroken and convinced someone has him. Now offering a $500 (USD) reward for his safe return. It is posted everywhere within a 20 mile radius....oh, he's microchipped as well!

DENNIS - 9-1-2007 at 06:38 PM

Praying...........and keeping my eyes open.

Paulina - 9-1-2007 at 07:08 PM

Did Barney have U.S. tags on him? I sometimes worry about Cora when she sneaks off to the beach that a camper will find her and think she's lost, take her back to the states to call us. We've written our baja number on the back side of her rabies tag, but still need to get her an official Baja tag for our next trip down.

We're keeping the good thoughts.

P y D y C

bajabound2005 - 9-1-2007 at 07:17 PM

barney is tagged (if he still has his collar) with a USA and Ensenada number; and he's chipped lest he make his way back to the US>>>

Paula - 9-1-2007 at 09:27 PM

I can only imagine how you must be feeling. Your dog is just.... your dog, and to not know where he is...

I can't be of much help up here in Loreto, but I'm sure hoping he gets back to you.

DianaT - 9-2-2007 at 04:13 PM

Just another Barney Bump---really hope he returns home soon.

bajabound2005 - 9-2-2007 at 05:45 PM

Well, we've had a number of calls based on our reward flyer. Unfortunately, each dog so far has turned out to be a basset hound. That's 3 so far, 2 just today! Who knew that were that many bassets in these parts, let alone, LOST bassets? Have another one to check out a little later.

Thanks for your support, fellow Nomads!

bajabound2005 - 9-2-2007 at 06:18 PM

I also want to mention that Bajamigo started a Google Group called Barney's Rescue. Right now, it's all about Barney, but our intention is to get this group going for ALL LOST/FOUND BAJA PETS. The site is: http://groups.google.com/group/barneys-rescue
and you have to have a Google account (which given all the Google Earth on Nomad a great deal of you have!) to become a member of the group but it's free! Maybe someday we can actually create a pet registration database for Baja (Doug???).

Barney Bump

bajaguy - 9-3-2007 at 06:46 AM

Barney....where are you???????.........come home now!!!

Minnow - 9-3-2007 at 06:59 AM

Lock up your Bassets and Beagles if you live in northern baja.:O I would post what my wife is saying about all this, but you would just think I was being mean. Good luck, and be careful. Who knows what lengths some people will go for 500 US, or to meet someone willing to pay that kind of money for the return of a dog.

Bruce R Leech - 9-3-2007 at 07:02 AM

we are still looking

bajabound2005 - 9-3-2007 at 07:42 PM

Thanks to Bruce Leech and others for helping us. We went on our ...5th?? false alarm this evening - it was YET another Basset! There cannot be this many Bassets in this area - but every one is different from the last one; at first we figured this was one lost Basset making the rounds; but NO! Barney is a BEAGLE - a TALL Beagle.

We are now convinced he's been stolen. We just heard there is a new movie out about Underdog...a beagle and now beagles are in great demand. What they don't know is how stubborn and uncooperative beagles can be! Everyone keep their hopes up and eyes open.

[Edited on 9-5-2007 by bajabound2005]

bajabound2005 - 9-4-2007 at 07:37 PM

This is not a bump but an appeal -- we've put flyers everywhere we can think of between Ensenada and La Bufadora; we truly believe he's been "dog-napped" - if you are in/on the Baja - or heck- NOT - but would be willing to put one of our flyers on/in your car; email or u2u us and we can email you one to print out. Printing in color is very important or we end up with a few more basset hounds...but if you're driving around it gives a lot of exposure to Barney!

docsmom - 9-4-2007 at 08:43 PM

Bajabound,
Sent you a U2U with my information in Las Vegas. I'm having a bit of difficulty with the U2U's so please contact me if you didn't get it. It's a long shot but I'd be happy to post Barney's information in my car window and in the places I frequent.
You don't seem to be posted on Craigslist in Tijuana or San Diego. It's an avenue.....
Let me know if I can help you with that.

bajabound2005 - 9-5-2007 at 08:38 PM

those trucks are probably responsible for more than a few displaced dogs, yikes!

I do hope Barney shows up soon!

beachbum1A - 9-6-2007 at 08:10 AM

I almost suggested a "Banner Towing Plane" ,but here in Ensenada around the beach areas they use a small plane with a loud speaker system to tell evetyone below about whatever it is they're promoting. Might not be a bad idea...............

bajabound2005 - 9-7-2007 at 07:29 PM

I need to bring this back up to the top...I really want to post that the Barney is back but he's not. We are on day 11 of his gone missing...we hear "everyone is looking for that dog" which is why at 6:09 am THIS morning we sprung to action when the phone rang and they said they had our Barney; it was yet, another basset hound! We had at least 2 more calls today about that SAME basset hound...Barney is a BEAGLE! A tall beagle but still a beagle in every way, shape and form. And there is this huge hole in our lives without him:(

[Edited on 9-8-2007 by bajabound2005]

Paint 'em

bajaguy - 9-7-2007 at 08:32 PM

have bajamigo carry a can of orange spray paint....that way he can spray all of the bassetts that he has looked at........just ask the callers if the dog is orange!!!!

bajabound2005 - 9-7-2007 at 08:39 PM

we are actually thinking of tagging them " I AM NOT BARNEY"

I have never stopped worrying about Barney. I am soooooo glad you got him back. How far away from your home is Maneadero?
I would love to hear the story, as much as you know. I'm going outside right now to tell Paco (my dog) the news!:bounce:

bajabound2005 - 9-29-2007 at 11:48 AM

Maneadero is about 7 miles from our home. I'm sure Barney does have a story to tell but I don't think we'll ever know it. Our best guess is that someone offered him comfort after "the big bang" and decided he'd make a nice pet and took him home. Left his very nice collar on him but removed the tags. He does not like to be confined and if there is a way out, he'll find it. So we are thinking he "broke out" last night or early this morning. The man who brought him to us this morning said he found him this morning on his way this way. Whatever, it works for all of us - he's HOME!

Very good news indeed. Funny coincidence. Last year when Buzz went missing in Mulege he was retuned 6 days later with his collatr minus the tags. Hmmmmmmm, you gotta wonder.:?:

Hooooray for Barney's safe and healthy return!!!

I felt sooo bad for you folks. Had a teagle or a barrier, we were never quite sure which dominated, beagle or terrier. Her name was Marjean Gumbody and she hated fireworks, too. Neighbor kids would torment her around July 4th. I so understood how he might run off and he is such a handsome boy he was probably hard to resist.

Anyway glad he's back with his loving people! Congratulations!! :bounce:

I hadn't commented before, but every time I visited the board and saw that your pooch was still AWOL it brought a little sadness to my heart. I am honestly shedding tears of happiness for you! There is nothing much that spoil the rest of my day. (Whew) I HOPE.

toneart - 9-29-2007 at 05:41 PM

You might consider an Invisible Fence System if you have property Barney can roam. I put it in for Paco and it works!!! I would be the last to do anything that is cruel. The deterrent is less that a shock and a little more than a buzz. I have done it to myself. (and now I don't leave home)...no...that's not right. Actually the buzz/shock can be adjusted and they learn boundries the first time. It is just enough for them to be surprised, and they don't like to be surprised. :o

You can U2U me if you need more information. Again, I'm very happy you got Barney back. If only they could talk.....:?:

Bedman - 9-29-2007 at 06:32 PM

Congratulations!!!!! That is the best news I've heard hear in a long time. If only Barney could talk.

Maybe we ought to have a story made up for Barney? I'll start it and everyone can add a piece to it.

It was a Tuesday morning. I was laying out side enjoying a warm nap in the sun whan all of a sudden BOOMMM!! The Sky is Falling, The SKY is FALLING!!! I ran as fast as I could, straight away from the bomb that just went off. 15 minutes later I was far away. ......

bajajudy - 9-29-2007 at 06:45 PM

I ran so hard and so fast and so long that when I finally stopped I was lost.
These really nice people picked me up and started feeding me but the minute they turned their back I took off looking for my mommy and daddy.

Yes! I think they should sign on to Nomads so they can apologize to all of us for the worry they caused to so many people, and mostly to you for causing you to suffer one long , sad month.

Again, hooray for happy endings!
