big fire now near Maneadero

Bruce R Leech - 10-22-2007 at 09:44 PM

I can see lots of smoke and a big glow in the sky to the south.

bajadock - 10-23-2007 at 07:09 AM

Ridge near microwave/radio antenna hill, eastern edge of Punta Banda peninsula on fire last night. Flames on hills at Ramajal(tidal flats of Punta Banda) and a few hundred meters just east of Cantu this morning. Flames within 2 miles of my house on south side of Punta Banda peninsula close to Camp Kennedy at 3AM. Hope all are safe.

Bruce R Leech - 10-23-2007 at 07:21 AM

I saw the smoke from that one and was wondering if it was close to you guys.

BajaGuera - 10-23-2007 at 10:03 AM

Just got off the phone with a friend at La Bufadora - she had just received a phone call from someone on the road who said the hill behind Junior's Burgers was aflame. Smoke is pretty heavy at La Buf right now - per my friend.

This is third hand info - hoping to hear from someone local on this board with an eyewitness account .

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 10:07 AM

Yes, the fire is behind the Juniors Burger area in El Ramajal. We know a few people living in that area and they were up all night...Apparently started higher on the ridge in El Mirador where ~50 families were evacuated from yesterday. Will have some pix later. Going out to "survey" the area now.

Just returned from our survey.
1. Cantu is now on fire. When we went thru en route to Maneadero ~ 10:00 am all was quiet. Returning just moments ago -- it's on fire. The ridge above the town engulfed and within inches of homes. Fire Depts from Punta Banda, Maneadero and Ensenada present. Civil Protection and ambulances present. Intense heat we could feel from the road. We snapped a few photos which we'll post shortly.

2. Mex 1 just south of El Zorillo, directly across from Las Canadas Camping and Aquatic park --- all on fire getting ready to jump Mex 1 and into Las Canadas.

Winds picking up again - it ain't pretty.

Pictures please...............

DENNIS - 10-23-2007 at 12:28 PM

When it gets to the dump road, I'm packing. My keyboard is so full of dirt I don't know how long it'll last.

These pix are from last nigth

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 12:38 PM

This is of El Ramajal between Cantu and Maneadero. Taken last night by a friend who lives there.

Thanks Paulina. Unfortunatly, your place is between mine and the wind-blown fire. I really don't think we have to worry. The only benefit of a drought is the small amount of fuel. We'll be allright.
Thanks again for the cool Nomad thought.

No visability

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 01:12 PM

No visibility but only in Cantu -- go a little further west or east and it's clear again. This guy is on his roof with a hose. There is a line of men behind him on the ground doing the bucket brigade.

And very little visability. Letting alternate directions go one at a time.

This photo was just sent to me by my neighbors, taken from the deck on my house.

Getting intense

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 01:21 PM

We sure hope the folks living up on this hill evacuated!

This we took further away

before we could really see what was happening in Cantu.

No, Doug's pix were taken right on the Carratera La Bufadora - right below Junior's.

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 01:40 PM

Doesn't look like the wind is blowing there in Cantu, and they have a good water supply. They should be ok. Thanks for the pictures.

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 01:42 PM

Lencho, thats the guy who robbed my house, wifes parents house.

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 04:52 PM

UPDATE: The winds have died down. They were able to drive the is that they saved every home. Cantu has been saved! The road (Carratera La Bufadora) has been reopened. The fire did jump the road at one point to the lagoon side but it looks like they were ready for that. We have phone service but not electricity (on our neighbor's generator right now). CFE is already out there working on it.

[Edited on 10-24-2007 by bajabound2005]

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 04:56 PM

Like I said before, there are no large trees up there to really put the fuel to the fire.

greybaby - 10-23-2007 at 05:01 PM

Any update on the fires? We're looking at the pictures trying to figure out where our house is in all of it. We're in Cantu right across from the police station. Nothing but "stuff" if our house burns but the poor people of Cantu.

Thanks for any info.

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 05:02 PM

Maralyn, You and BB05 must have cross posted. Check out her last post.

greybaby - 10-23-2007 at 05:12 PM

Thanks, Tom. I see that now. We feel so far removed up here but appreciate all the updates.

You all be careful!!

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 05:14 PM

When you coming back?

greybaby - 10-23-2007 at 05:21 PM

To visit - we hope soon. Were there for a couple of days in June. Probably won't ever be able to live there again. Our kids are in Idaho and we've ended up with stressful jobs here that keep us tied down. Retirement? Maybe. Moises, our neighbor, watches over the house and keeps close tabs on things for us.

Miss it terribly. Are you living there now?

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 08:42 PM

at this moment, all is looking quiet here. Many hours of complete boredom interrupted by a couple of hours of complete terror...The moon is looking full, the skies are looking clear. We are all hoping and praying for a night without incident...although there is still no electricity. That we can do without!

Paula - 10-23-2007 at 08:59 PM

Bajabound 2005, Dennis, and all of you up there-- fire is terrifying, I feel for you, and hope for the best. Stay safe...

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 09:00 PM

BUT WAIT, the electricity just came on!!!! YAHOOOOO!

greybaby - 10-23-2007 at 09:18 PM

Was just going to tell you all I wish we were there. And now with the power back on, that's even more reason to be there. Enjoy.

Thanks for all who provided pictures and updates. It really helps when you're far away and have property nearby as well as friends in your neighborhood.

Pic of the Staging Area...

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 09:25 PM

This was in the soccer field headed out toward Punta de Estero; these guys did a fantastic job today! And as you can see, there were lots of them from every kind of service.

I would be willing to bet that Sr. Alejandro Pabloff was right down there in the middle of the mix. Bless that man's heart.

Thank you for the updates.

bajabound2005 - 10-23-2007 at 09:58 PM

EVERYONE was out there helping today! Marines, Army, Volunteer Fire Depts from all surrounding communities; workers from farms and ranches -- today, EVERYONE was a fireman. And hats off to them! They pulled it off. When we saw those flames licking the sides of houses we thought "that's it" --- but it looks like all the homes survived; maybe some with a few lick marks, but all is lookin' good right now.

Sharksbaja - 10-23-2007 at 11:36 PM

God I love the solidarity that Mexicans behold in times like these.

greybaby - 10-24-2007 at 06:03 AM

Amen.

DENNIS - 10-24-2007 at 06:52 AM

6:45 AM.... Calm and beautiful, at least from my perspective. Time to check the damage and see what good can be done.

DENNIS - 10-24-2007 at 06:57 AM

I-5 closed, north and south between Oceanside and San Clemente due to one of those infamous backfires being caught up in a wind shift. No trains....no cars....no nothing can get through.

Taco de Baja - 10-24-2007 at 07:14 AM

Here's a cpuple of LARGE satellite images showing the smoke from the Baja fires (and so cal too) yesterday afternoon.

DanO - 10-24-2007 at 10:18 AM

Anyone have any news about the status of the fires in the Santo Tomas Valley? Last night the forest service map showed several new fires down there, but their site is not working now.

bajabound2005 - 10-24-2007 at 02:51 PM

Ejido Antonio Melendrez took the worst of that fire. 52 houses and their entire avocado grove - and some livestock.

This morning the fire near El Zorillo was still going and there were 2 more almost due east of Maneadero up in the hill/mountains. It looks, right now, as if those 2 have merged into one giant fire.

In your Baja Almanac, I would guestimate it at page 7, K1 and L1 would be the general location.

DENNIS - 10-24-2007 at 02:59 PM

No way that is near Zorillo. Way further back, toward the sierras. An hour ago it looked like the pictures of Hiroshima. A monster mushroom cloud.

bajabound2005 - 10-24-2007 at 03:26 PM

"This morning the fire near El Zorillo was still going and there were 2 more almost due east of Maneadero up in the hill/mountains. It looks, right now, as if those 2 have merged into one giant fire."

The 2 that I'm guessing merged are almost due East from Maneadero and are separate from the El Zorillo fire.

getsome - 10-24-2007 at 04:16 PM

Does anyone know if this fire is near hwy 1?
I am driving down in the morning.
Thanks in advance...

bajabound2005 - 10-24-2007 at 09:15 PM

Was, and may still be. 2 nights ago Hwy 1 was closed at El Zorillo southbound and Ej. Uruapan northbound for several hours. Earlier it looked like the fires we're quite far back from the highway -- up in the mountains.

ALL PIX MONDAY evening, Oct 22...
Punta Banda peninsula, looking southeast, view just north of Santo Tomas

Sky filling with smoke, ash

View from my rooftop deck

Ridge just above trash dump, near Campo LaJolla

Have heard of heroism from firefighters, volunteers of every kind. How spoiled I am when I'm thinking of my house construction, countertop installation and what beverages I'm serving this saturday.

San Diego visit tues, 10/23 was jaw-dropping with sights of devastation.
