Nomads, what is your favorite music for driving through Baja? And is it different than what you listen to before leaving or after you've been here a while?

For those who only fly in, what do you most want to hear when you get here?

jerry - 12-15-2007 at 08:00 PM

For the carretera- audiobooks.
The dirt road home stretch- can't hear much but the sound of rattling teeth.

The music really begins when we arrive!

A recent addition to my playlist: 10,000 Maniacs. I'll look them up now on Rhapsody.com to see what they sound like. Well to hear what they sound like - you know what I mean.

Last December 21st, as we trailered our HiLo down the Cerro del Infierno (Hill of Hell) on our way to Loreto, my husband said, "Put your Linda Ronstad CD on, Honey"

"Canciones de Mi Padre"
and "Mas Canciones"

Que suave!! We sang our hearts out! :dudette:

For driving around LTO, I love Los Lonely Boys 2006 release "Sacred".

No Mexican music?

Packoderm - 12-15-2007 at 09:26 PM

They play the Texas Tornadoes and Santana from time to time. But mostly, I'd say no Mexican music on this station. I don't think I would ever play any Mexican music for my own listening pleasure while driving.

larry - 12-15-2007 at 09:29 PM

El Chalinillo -- El Taxista
El Coyote y su Banda -- Prohibido
Julio Preciado -- Un Rinconcito en el Cielo
Miguel y Miguel -- Sonora y sus Ojos Negros
Los Reyes de Control -- Como Pude Enamorarme de Ti
Los Dareyes de la Sierra -- El Fin de Nuestro Amor
Los Alegres de la Sierra -- Asi Como Hoy
Diana Reyes (de La Paz, BCS) -- El Sol No Regresa
Intocable -- Eres Mi Droga
Los Tigres del Norte -- Jefe de Jefes
Los Tucanes de Tijuana -- Amor Platonico
Los Reales del Rancho -- Verde Pinito

Packoderm - 12-15-2007 at 09:32 PM

I'd listen to Mexican music if they had a version of Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire.

Paula - 12-15-2007 at 09:33 PM

Ola,
I learned reently of Habib Koite & Bamada, bought the CD on the way down in October. Very cool and
m e l l o w-- I smiled through LA traffic. I'm going to check out the ones you mentioned, I'd like to have more African.

Loretana,
Ronstad in Spanish is gorgeous! Los Lonely Boys? Great name-- need to look into this one.

Packoderm,
My daughter loved KPIG when she lived in Santa Cruz. That playlist could keep you dancing til the cows come home!

805gregg,
I listen to lots of Latin and Mexican! Old classics like Los Panchos and Trio Montealban when driving on bumpy roads, norteño driving in town, and at home. Lots of Cuban stuff, Mana, Elephante.

Packoderm - 12-15-2007 at 09:35 PM

On KPIG: Sat 6:48pm Los Lonely Boys Senorita

Packoderm - 12-15-2007 at 09:41 PM

Here's how you can sample songs in their complete length. Go to rhapsody.com and enter whatever you want to listen to. They most probably have it. Just enter los loney boys in the Listen Now box, and then hit the link for Los Lonely Boys/Latin Rock, then you'll see Senorita pop up as one of the choices. You get to listen to 25 full length songs each month, but you have to register first if you want more than 30 second samples.

I'll have to ask Santa for one of those. I leave for Baja on the 26th, so that will not allow much time for downloading. It looks like I'll just be flipping over my Junior Brown and Van Morrison tapes over and over. I'm a bit stuck in the stone age.

I'm in the low-tech club too. I am proficient at buying and playing CD's and I can work a radio. But not a radio through a computer, although the KPIG streaming thing looks possible.

but ipods? downloading??? Pass me a rusty nail, judy, before I have a panic attack just thinking about it!

Don Alley - 12-15-2007 at 10:24 PM

Unfortunately, many online media sources are not allowing us to access their services from Mexico. Like rhapsody.com, NBC...

Apple iTunes still works; yesterday I downloaded the rest of a Mariachi Reynas de Los Angeles, an LA based all female mariachi band I like. A few other Spanish tunes I frequently play on my iPod include Los Tigres del Norte (favorite song: "Jose Perez Leon"), Lila Downs ("Soy Pescador"), and, curiously, ABBA in Spanish.

Paula has a ton of Spanish music.

What are the most popular USA tunes in Baja, among the Mexican people? In LOreto I hear:

Hotel California
My Way
Seasons in the Sun (arrrgh!)

As an American, I am happy to point out that Seasons in the Sun is actually of Canadian origin.

Strunz and Farrah Primal Magic 24/7.
But not by choice, it's kinda burned into my brain.
Thanks Randy, I owe you one.

Are you using Mexican DSL which tags you as "foreign" somehow?

Is there any other online activity that's blocked for you- banking, online shopping (heaven forbid)?

Can you guys listen to the online sites I posted above?

Kingston Trio, Ike and Tina Turner, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Rivers, Elvis, Three Dog Night, Eagles and Coasters ---just to name a few. I can see where the generation gap really shows up in the music we like. Rap music sucks. Country rules as does rock n roll.

Thank you Oladulce!

So much good music here. The River Jordan (Vusi Mahlasela) video is gorgeous!

All of your links worked for me. We can shop-- thank heavens! More coming from Don.

Websites identify the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that you use to reach them. They can also identify the type of computer and the web browser that you use.

Copyright laws require agreements to be made before "intellectual property" can be sold on a country-by-country basis. So now some sites identify the location of your ISP, and if it's in a coountry where the proper red tape hasn't been accomplished, you get a "Sorry" message. Pandora is another site I can't use.

Paula did get the music you linked to, thanks!

When it comes down to it, I like country, rock and roll, jazz, show tunes, classical, soul, new age, alternative, African, Calypso, ska, various folk (American, Greek, Latvian), the various Mexican (ranchero, cumbia, banda), reggae, punk, heavy metal, Indian, drinking songs, bluegrass, pretty much anything - but rap.

I forgot blues.

I only know it from the Saturday Night Live , Mike Myers "Coffee Talk" lady. The character based on his Barbara Streisand-loving Jewish mother-in-law who between yiddish expressions, said stuff like "that Babs, she sings like butta".

Now I'm feeling verklempt, so talk amongst yourselves...

re Joyce . . hilarious!

Larry (who said "As an American, I am happy to point out that Seasons in the Sun is actually of Canadian origin.") - I must respond that I am equally happy to point out that "Tallahassee Lassie" is NOT Canadian . .

(Sorry, don't know how to do those enclosed quotes).

A friend has given me a Christmas gift of a Costco 500GB external USB disk with 227GB of music on it (about 40,000 songs I believe). When I asked how I would ever get even a part of that onto CDs, he made some remark about that being "so 20th century".

The new mode is apparently to dump a couple of weeks worth of your favorite playlists to an .mp3 player . . . with me so far Judy? Me too . . . oh well.

A few year ago a small group of us walked into a tiny restaurant just north of GN. We were the only gringos in the place. There was a boombox playing Ranchero music. After we sat down and were given menus, they took out their music and the next thing we heard was...

We had JOY, we had FUN, we had SEASONS IN THE SUN...

We all busted up.
