What's in your frig?

bajadock - 12-29-2007 at 10:40 AM

Friends have attempted to continue the story/myth that says
Mexican beer purchased in USA is different recipe/taste. The Tecate in my frig is a USA purchase, then "imported" here.

My taste buds can't tell the difference. You?

bajadedom - 12-29-2007 at 10:52 AM

Now that's a fridge with all the Baja necessities!

Where is the Chorizo?

bajabound2005 - 12-29-2007 at 12:54 PM

That REALLY IS Doc's fridge!!! What he has hidden in the back is his Pabst Blue Ribbon...

bajamigo - 12-29-2007 at 02:49 PM

In cans, no less!

DENNIS - 12-29-2007 at 03:07 PM

Doc....

Do you really think that Tecate has a different recipe for export beer? Maybe they do. Not so strong? I don't know. I do know it can be bought for less in the states than it can in Tecate. I once asked a man in a beer store why it cost more in Tecate than Ensenada. He said it was fresher. Argue with that logic.

Worked in a Dutch brewery when I was a kid. They do brew different beer for export. I think it has to do with the alcohol allowances in each country. No idea if that has any influence on taste and flavor.

vandenberg - 12-29-2007 at 03:41 PM

And Pompano,
It's amazing how beer favorites change over the years.
I remember in the 70's, Hamm's, Olympia and Pabst topping the charts for best sellers. Nowadays they are discounted in all the stores, because you can't give them away.
Beer products really show the power of advertising.
If Bud quit advertising , you could probably buy it for $2.00 a six pack , wit $ 1.50 going to the government for taxes.:lol:

Then and Now

MrBillM - 12-29-2007 at 04:18 PM

A few years back the alcohol content difference was resolved and the article I read said that it was standardized at 4.5 % resulting in both the Domestic and Export product being the same brew.

bajadock - 12-29-2007 at 07:40 PM

time for a blind beer tasting. too many wine snobs in my barrio.

Also, thanks, Bill. I've done a blind tasting on Tecate purchased on both sides of border and my construction crews couldn't tell the difference.

Your construction crew is blind? Jeezo Doc, they did put in windows, didn't they?

Al G - 12-29-2007 at 07:51 PM

Bajadock.. you have peaked my curiosity...I will have to buy a 6 pack of LARGE brewery beer so I will know what Pabst Brewing is about...they were around in the 50's as a national beer. I think my daddy drank it??? I have not purchased a large brewery beer(American) in many years.

bajadock - 12-29-2007 at 07:57 PM

Albert G, I get lots of comments on my enjoyment of Pabst. But, I stock my frig with an ecclectic mix. That "large" brewery distinction comes from the Great American Beer Fest, held annually in Denver.

My preference runs toward more international tastes. Smithwick's comes to mind after not tasting it for past 12 months. Bohemia is my favorite mex brew.

shari - 12-29-2007 at 08:49 PM

Recently there was a promotion where you could trade in the little red tecate tabs for free beer....7 tabs get you one free beer....42 for a 6 pack...84 for 12 etc....now Juan swears that the tecate beer in the cans with the red tabs is crummy...not as good a quality as the normal silver tab cans and HE would know!

Maybe just...." CRUMMIER " :?::P:barf:

bajabound2005 - 12-29-2007 at 09:03 PM

Yes, Dennis, Doc has many windows but if he has to have a favorite Mex beer, mine is Negro Modelo. And it's rarely had....

bigmike - 12-30-2007 at 02:31 AM

Doc, have you ever met a beer you didn't like?
Or for that matter a wine?
What's in my Frig? Food, Food and more food
for the New Years Eve party.
However went thru my bar getting ready for the party
and was told by the boss not to buy any more VO as I
only had 16 bottles!!
Happy New Year!!!

jorgie - 12-30-2007 at 07:46 AM

Juan converted me to real beer.......TECATE....brewed in Mexico without the preservative that is in TECATE sold in the USA......did I mention TECATE ??

bajadock - 12-30-2007 at 08:30 AM

Morgaine,
Yes, I escaped Cleveland in 1972. My brother re-introduced me to Pabst in approx 1995. It doesn't have the after-burner taste that the other bottom-shelf USA beers(Mil's best, Blatz, Old Style) have.

Will need to restock Nego Modelo, BB05, as that one has been absent for a few months.

Jorgie,
I have heard about the "preservative" difference theory, but, cannot verify.

BigMike, please post a map for your NYE party. That way I can evacuate the dozens of beer tasters currently lounging at my place.

Just yesterday I saw 12 paks of Negra Modelo [ spelled with an A ] at WalMart. The beauty of that is they are throw away bottles. It was before 10 AM so I couldn't buy any for a taste test. When things change, deposit to throw away, you have to wonder if quality changed as well. I'll have to look into this further.

bigmike - 12-30-2007 at 08:56 AM

:spingrin:Just take a right from your place, go up the hill, then down the hill, turn right and then past fire dept turn right , then next right, then next right and your there.
However only have Tecate and Pacifico, no Pabst!!
Thought you got rid of all the people the other night, guess a few of them were hiding in your closets and under your bed.

capt. mike - 12-30-2007 at 09:11 AM

try busch bavarian, they are goooooooood!!!

wait till 10 when they open, its worth it.

Pacifico

bajaguy - 12-30-2007 at 11:59 AM

A definate taste difference between the USA import vs the Mexican purchased (sin lime for the test). The Mexican tastes better!!!!

Cypress - 12-30-2007 at 12:18 PM

Seems like the vast majority of the major beer brands all taste like beer.

After years of confusion-- is it modelo negra or negro modela, etc-- I finally figured out why it is Negra Modelo! Negra describes the contents of the can, cerveza negra.

Now I can move on to some of the other things that confuse me-- as soon as I remember what they are

I think you can only get it in bottles. Something else that needs thorough investigation.

Paula - 12-30-2007 at 05:37 PM

Yes, it does only come in bottles, and it is my favorite beer! I should pay more attention to what I drink:O

I refuse to allow known facts to deny me my thorough investigation since the taste test is a big part of it.

Paula - 12-30-2007 at 07:15 PM

Tomorrow I'll pick up a dozen Negras. I'l let you know after I drink them if any tasted like they came in cans.

DENNIS - 12-30-2007 at 07:21 PM

A dozen? You can drink a dozen? OK....I'll look forward to your clear-headed report.

Really? You can drink a dozen? That stuff is heavy.

Paula - 12-30-2007 at 08:05 PM

OK-- truth-- I can drink two.

DENNIS - 12-30-2007 at 08:13 PM

Two dozen? WOW.......

Paula - 12-30-2007 at 10:13 PM

No, just two.

I have also found the Modelo Negro to be far superior to the reg Modelo.
