somethings happenin' here

Keri - 1-31-2008 at 02:45 PM

just came through the rosarito toll gate at 1:00 pm. We were going south, on the north side 6 police cars (black and whites and dark blue pje and a truck) lights on , cops out of their cars stopping people on both sides, checking in cars ,most had rifles drawn. We asked the toll lady what was going on . She said mucho banditos. . Don't know what it was about, but glad we could get out quick. You never know when you'll be in the middle of a shoot out and get caught in the crossfire. k:O:?:

Be very careful!

So hola to Miguel!

From my experience living in El Salvador in the sixties there is nothing more scary and dangerous then being confronted by "jittery" cops.

bajaguy - 1-31-2008 at 03:19 PM

Apparently found some (new) bodies near Popotla either today or yesterday

General rule: Just do what they tell you to do and you will be fine.

Federal Judiciales were stopping sothbound cars at the San Ignacio checkpoint Wednesday afternoon...we were northbound and didn't get even searched. Road into Asuncion is still in very good shape.

Ferna.... It seems to be a dumping ground. Isn't it safe for day trips?

Ignorant sensationalism at it grimy worst...

The Gull - 1-31-2008 at 05:10 PM

What does the Rosarito Toll gate have to do with the 2000 road? They don't even connect.

Who cares about bodies at Popotla, if there were any, as long as they are not in the middle of the old road (Libre).

I'll bet those bad people had zoomed through the toll booth without trying to pay.

Hook - 1-31-2008 at 05:23 PM

Alfred Hitchc-ck said it would be like this.

I see Miss Congeniality is back.

I think...

Mexray - 1-31-2008 at 06:49 PM

...I'm going to buy and old Brink's Armored Truck to commute to Baja Sur. I'll install some Safety Deposit Boxes in it to rent out to fellow travelers that want their Pesos to make it down South, safely...:o

Aventurera - 1-31-2008 at 06:55 PM

I, too, would like to hear more about why not to use Blvd 2000 since I had received several recommendations for using it.

It's like a have to choose the lesser of 3 evils: Highway 3 with twists, turns and mountains, which all give me anxiety; Blvd 2000 with...banditos?; or Tijuana with the border crossing from hell and possibly rogue policemen looking for mordidas.

I suspect that whichever route I take in driving back from Ensenada to the border (be it SY, Otay or Tecate), I am going to dress like a homeless person, slouch down as far as I can in my seat, and pass the entire trip praying! :o

I wish Scotty could just beam me up!

bajabound2005 - 1-31-2008 at 07:17 PM

Blvd 2000 DURING THE DAY is the only way to go! I think even FDT would agree to that --- depends, of course, on your final destination no matter which way you are traveling...but we LOVE that road.

In Rosarito Today at 2:00 pm

Gypsy Jan - 1-31-2008 at 07:53 PM

No sign of any police activity at the Rosarito toll booth.

Going up there on the toll road, passed a few camo trucks loaded with soldiers.

Going through town on the main boulevard, saw a couple more camo trucks with soldiers going through town.

Passing Waldo's $1.00 mart, a couple of blocks north, I looked to the right and saw a truck with a machine gun mounted on it parked about twenty feet back from the intersection.

I continued on to my vet appointment and to the market - everything and everyone seemed to be calm and normal.

woody with a view - 1-31-2008 at 08:22 PM

the calm before the storm, perhaps!:?:

DENNIS - 1-31-2008 at 08:36 PM

Machine guns at WaldoMart. What would be unusual about that? Sounds calm and normal to me.

That's the problem. Machine guns have, unfortunately, become the norm.

David K - 2-1-2008 at 10:52 AM

In Mexico, I like machine guns in the hands of the army, not the mafia! If there was more show of force until the mafia is disarmed, then tourist might feel safer and return to that part of Baja.

DENNIS - 2-1-2008 at 11:25 AM

I think every guest in Mexico should be issued a machine gun when they get their FMT.

Dennis answered correctly.

Woooosh - 2-2-2008 at 12:23 PM

The upswing in miltary is due to the fact that the Rosarito police are still waiting for their guns to be returned to them. The Federales are driving the police trucks for now and patrolling the streets. Hugo Torres seems to feel that the very visible presence of the military will show the tourists that everything is safe. yikes! Word on the street is that things are going to stay tense for about two more weeks- when the police return.

In 1976 while living in El Salvador at La Libertad, we used to sit in the arched window of the abandoned little Chapel at the Cemetary at sunrise and check the surf. 20 years later, Surfer magazine does a spread article on Bob Rotherhams ripper son Jimmy, raise up on the longest point barrel wave in the Eastern Pacific, with him sitting in same arch window with the walls around it riddled with bullet holes, looking like what sprays of machine gun fire would look like. It broke my heart.

I truely hope it doesn't come to that anywhere in Baja, or I'm moving off the continent.

I agree with David K,The Mexican government needs to continue to show more force to drive the bad guys out.We were in Rosarito ,on our way home from Santispec the first part of January. There were groups of three trucks full of machine gun totting officers ,both federales and policia, patrolling the main streets.

The exact same movie was playing Saturday morning, Feb. 2nd at 11:30 AM Cars were lined up south bound as the Federales were checking all the cars. I have the LLAVE pass and went to the right to enter the LLAVE lane and went unnoticed.

There were perhaps 15 official cars from various organizations. Many officers from different agencies had rifles and automatic weapons at the ready.

Their presence may shift from place to place but, they won't be driven out. They have to be eradicated. Killed. Mexico must engage her enemy and assume the losses which are a part of war. If the US could just bring troops home from Iraq and loan them to Mexico, we would be involved in a war worth fighting.
I know...to think that would ever happen is ludicrous but, I can dream.
