somethings happenin' here

just came through the rosarito toll gate at 1:00 pm. We were going south, on the north side 6 police cars (black and whites and dark blue pje and a truck) lights on , cops out of their cars stopping people on both sides, checking in cars ,most had rifles drawn. We asked the toll lady what was going on . She said mucho banditos. . Don't know what it was about, but glad we could get out quick. You never know when you'll be in the middle of a shoot out and get caught in the crossfire. k:O:?:

From my experience living in El Salvador in the sixties there is nothing more scary and dangerous then being confronted by "jittery" cops.

Federal Judiciales were stopping sothbound cars at the San Ignacio checkpoint Wednesday afternoon...we were northbound and didn't get even searched. Road into Asuncion is still in very good shape.

Ignorant sensationalism at it grimy worst...

What does the Rosarito Toll gate have to do with the 2000 road? They don't even connect.

Who cares about bodies at Popotla, if there were any, as long as they are not in the middle of the old road (Libre).

I'll bet those bad people had zoomed through the toll booth without trying to pay.

I think...

...I'm going to buy and old Brink's Armored Truck to commute to Baja Sur. I'll install some Safety Deposit Boxes in it to rent out to fellow travelers that want their Pesos to make it down South, safely...:o

I, too, would like to hear more about why not to use Blvd 2000 since I had received several recommendations for using it.

It's like a have to choose the lesser of 3 evils: Highway 3 with twists, turns and mountains, which all give me anxiety; Blvd 2000 with...banditos?; or Tijuana with the border crossing from hell and possibly rogue policemen looking for mordidas.

I suspect that whichever route I take in driving back from Ensenada to the border (be it SY, Otay or Tecate), I am going to dress like a homeless person, slouch down as far as I can in my seat, and pass the entire trip praying! :o

I wish Scotty could just beam me up!

Blvd 2000 DURING THE DAY is the only way to go! I think even FDT would agree to that --- depends, of course, on your final destination no matter which way you are traveling...but we LOVE that road.

In Rosarito Today at 2:00 pm

No sign of any police activity at the Rosarito toll booth.

Going up there on the toll road, passed a few camo trucks loaded with soldiers.

Going through town on the main boulevard, saw a couple more camo trucks with soldiers going through town.

Passing Waldo's $1.00 mart, a couple of blocks north, I looked to the right and saw a truck with a machine gun mounted on it parked about twenty feet back from the intersection.

I continued on to my vet appointment and to the market - everything and everyone seemed to be calm and normal.

Machine guns at WaldoMart. What would be unusual about that? Sounds calm and normal to me.

That's the problem. Machine guns have, unfortunately, become the norm.

In Mexico, I like machine guns in the hands of the army, not the mafia! If there was more show of force until the mafia is disarmed, then tourist might feel safer and return to that part of Baja.
