Hotel Jardines Baja (San Quintin)

tripledigitken - 2-22-2008 at 07:16 PM

The hotel at the former restaurant is now open. I booked a room tonight. $35 single and $50 double. Very nice and I'll post pictures when I get home. No tv in my room, but wifi is available.

Guillermo is the owner and his relatives run the newly open ed restaurant. The food is excellent, with prices starting at around $8 for a fish dinner up to over $20 for lobster.

The hotel is in a tropical garden and very quiet, it is off the highway on the road to the Old Mill. I will post coordinates after I get home.

I highly recommend both the restaurant and the hotel. It offers another choice for those that want to overnight in San Quintin or a place to stay while fishing.

By the way the Margarita's are excellent!

from usa 011 52 (616) 165 6060. They told me they have a website.

It's San QUINTIN...not San Quentin (which I believe is a prison in California...!)

baja Steve - 2-22-2008 at 08:41 PM

We also stayed there the first of this month and I agree it is GREAT. We will be back.

bajabound2005 - 2-22-2008 at 09:04 PM

Thank you SO MUCH for correcting the spelling; now the "search" function will actually pull up this thread!!!!

Liked the rooms, liked the cafe...what more can we say?

Really enjoyed the old restaurant and glad to hear they are now open. Wonder if they accept dogs????

Thanks for the update. I was wondering what was going to happen with this place. It wasn't bad in the past, but sounds really nce now.

Yeah, but they kill you on the exchange rate. It's best to use Pesos.

--Larry

Well, we found out last night---they accepted our pesos, and they let our dogs stay with us---they could not afford the exchange rate for our dogs.:lol:

I bumped this up to HIGHLY recommend this place. Yes, the old Jardines Restaurant was good, but the new one is REALLY good and the hotel is just great. We stayed there last night.

Why we really like Jardines and will return on a regular basis. (Baja Cactus is still on our return list, also)

1. Rooms are large and bright.
2. Beds are very good.
3. Bathroom is large, large shower with instant hot water, great towels, washclothes, and bath mat.
4. It is off the highway so absolutely quiet---hard to believe that one is near San Quintin.
5. The gardens are incredible---have to see them to believe them.
6. Owners are great. Guillermo offered us some baby palms and cuttings from his magnificent hibiscus plants next time we go south.

It is everything Ken said it is in the original post and more. It is one of those special places difficult to describe fully.

They need a couple more signs. The sign from the main highway sends you toward the ocean. We knew to turn left at the big dirt road because we had been there before. Look for that road at about 1/2 mile and you can see the old Tecate sign.

They also need a sign for the restaurant and the hotel. The restaurant is the new building furthest south, but the entrance to the hotel looks like you might be driving into someone's beautiful home---well, actually you are. It is the home of Carmen and Guillermo, and they sure make everyone else feel at home.

Their website is www.hotel-jardinesbaja.com

Just two pictures of just a couple of very special things at Jardines,

Besides several of the newer multi-petalled hibiscus plants, Guillermo has some of the really old-fashion single petal ones---I just love them. This one was my favorite.

They really put a lot of thought into creating the hotel out of the old restaurant and home. Normally with the dogs, we don't like upstairs rooms, but these stairs are wonderful---I would guess there is only about a 3" rise between the stairs.

It is truly an oasis near a crowded noisey town.

I hate to disagree but the place can be very busy on weekends and not that quit. It's small and when full kind of crowded. But the grounds are beautiful.
On one weekend there was a large wedding that went on for hours very late.
Mid-week is probably very good.
The restuarant is excellent.

Will be checking it out later this week. Here is their website:

Been there (with dog), agree completely, very nice. Restaurant wasn't finished (last B1k) but heard it would be run by same people who ran Viejo San Quintin. Not on the bay, but very tranquil relaxing gardens.

The restaurant is worth a trip back there.

BTW --- we really hope everyone with dogs will be careful and respectful because Carmen told us that she did not want dogs at first. But then she realized that so many of the people who travel back and forth on a regular basis, those with homes further south, have dogs, so she decided to accept dogs.

She said that so far she has had no problems, and we sure hope it stays that way.

Is there room to park in a secure area if towing a boat?

Lots of room to park a boat---big parking lots. I guess one could say they are not secure, as they don't have fences or anything, but the owners say that they leave lots of things around and they have never had a problem.

There was one person with a boat and another with a trailer when we were there, and we had a lot of stuff in the back of our truck with just a shell over it, and had no problem.

I would feel comfortable parking a boat there, but maybe not everyone would. It is off the highway and out of town which, IMHO, is a real plus. It is south of San Quintin and Lazaro Card##as, so it really is more in a rural area.

And the pictures on their website only show a small part of the gardens. Oh, they also have a lot of citrus growing out back.

Nope... south of it, after the highway narrows (km.0) There is a sign (tall) for 'Jardines Baja' along the highway (I think about Km. 1 or 2) at the turnoff... just over a mile in, one left hand turn west of the highway and you will be there, just beyond the RV park.

David K - 9-11-2009 at 03:51 PM

Just went to my trip report 709-1:

We stopped in Ensenada for 4 tacos and 2 beers (100 pesos) at the places near the harbor. We got to Maneadero (10 miles from Ensenada) at 1:53 pm and kept on going to the San Quintin area for dinner at JARDINES BAJA, 1.3 miles west of Highway One, near Km. 2. Arrived at 4:30 pm and left at 5:30 http://www.hotel-jardinesbaja.com.

This was our one-year anniversary date and the Jardines was a fine place for a nice dinner. Elizabeth and I both had the steak and lobster dinner… with 4 beers US $57 (this was our most expensive meal). The Jardines is a beautiful, new restaurant and is the third time we have had dinner there, but this was the first time at the new building.

Bajahowodd - 9-12-2009 at 02:16 PM

Actually, Jardines has a sign posted on highway 1. We've found that road to be in better condition than the one heading to the Old Mill. Either road, make your first left.

San Quintin

C-Urchin - 9-12-2009 at 02:54 PM

Glad to know there is a good place in San Quentin. I went there 2 years ago and stayed with friends at "Cielito Lindo". To be avoided at all cost.

I am out of adjectives to describe the squalor of that place. Run-down would be a compliment. Nasty filthy rooms, gray linens (were white a few decades ago) lumpy sweaty smelly pillows, dust everywhere, raw, live electrical, fungus holding the few tiles left in the bathroom, rocking toilets that leak and on and on. Then you have to walk for half a kl. in wall to wall trash to get to a dirty beach.

The restaurant is kind of fun but the second night you start to notice the rather ancient chain smoking hookers circling like "sopilotes" in the bar. Very high miles on those models. Their choice clientele is the welfare residents from the US who live in the trailer park next door. The last stop where the RVs are fossilized to the "polvo". Perfect cast for the "Twilight Zone"

I got in my car, drove off to La Pinta next door brandishing my American Express :-) Beautiful, clean, comfortable little hotel and the beach there is out of this world! Sands of gold...

Marinero - 9-12-2009 at 03:33 PM

We liked it very much when we stayed there on our trip up in early August. Only thing was with all the moisture in the gardens there were lots of skeeters. We were out of spray but borrowed some. All else was great.

Bajahowodd - 9-12-2009 at 04:06 PM

Actually, there are several hotels in San Quintin to consider. The Villas de San Quintin is a newer place with a restaurant. Adjacent is a place that I just cannot recall the name of, but is the equal. I heartily recommend breakfast at Viejo San Quintin. It's just next to the hospital on the West side of the highway, but set back quite a bit, so very hard to find when traveling South. It is operated by the great folks who own the Jardines hotel and restaurant. I'm told that during the time they were converting their house/ restaurant into a hotel, they operated Viejo as a full time restaurant. Carmen and Guillermo. Great people with a great family.

jodiego - 2-13-2010 at 03:53 PM

Stopped for dinner on our way home last week. Although the restuarant is lacking in atmosphere, the food was excellent (lobster burrito's) and the cadillac margarita's were excellent. I requested Hornito's and grand marnier. They were out of GM and offered Damiana. DEEEEELicious. Three of them and I was very buzzed. Would definitely stay at the hotel next time.

Bajahowodd - 2-13-2010 at 04:16 PM

Geez. Were you hitting the road after that??

mulegemichael - 2-13-2010 at 05:02 PM

oh yeah, jardines!...it's the best thing happening in northern baja, imho...really....they run a really professional, clean, quiet, secure, establishment...AND...the restaurant next door is their daughters and son in laws...so it's all tied in...a quality place that shouldn't be missed...we LOVE our time there

Bajahowodd - 2-13-2010 at 05:20 PM

Just wish they had the financial where-with-all to build out more rooms. It can be very disappointing to arrive there only to find that they are booked. Even in this down economy, reservations are advised. Carmen y Guillermo, salud!

Heavens no. We stayed at the Old Mill thinking we would get a nice lobster dinner at Eddies. But alas, not only is the Old Mill restaurant still closed, but Eddies was also closed....I guess just for the evening. Anyway, the lady at the Old Mill recommended Jardines so we ate there. Bye the way, it rained that evening and the road out was treacherous....as usual. We did some off roading in a two wheel drive Tundra at the Seven Sisters after a big rain and the place we almost got really stuck was the road out of the Old Mill.

BajaGringo - 2-13-2010 at 06:34 PM

Jardines has more rooms in the works. Last I heard they had applied for the permits and should be working on that this year. They do serve a Cadillac Margarita that I have enjoyed sipping once or twice.

What I enjoy most about Jardines is the peace and quiet that goes along with two very accommodating hosts - Guillermo and Carmen...

A WARNING about this place....

Lee - 2-14-2010 at 01:33 PM

Reserved a ''Single'' here last year. Said I wanted upper floor. Was told ''Singles'' are downstairs. I arrived to find the ''Singles'' to be interior rooms -- and dark. View was out a window to another window across a hall. A window did open but it was near the ceiling. Ended up at Cactus 1/2 hour South and appreciate the TV in the rooms there.

a little help... which place.. never been to any.. :):)

David K - 2-14-2010 at 08:01 PM

This thread is about Jardines... so I would guess Lee is talking about there?

'Cactus 1/2 hour South' is Baja Cactus Motel, El Rosario... next door to the Pemex... an outstanding operation and perhaps the finest motel you will stay at... for under $40! Includes 24 desk clerk, bottled water, coffee maker, English TV channels, pressure boosted showers, Int'l calling from your room... more!

Oso - 2-15-2010 at 01:58 PM

I didn't know the restaurant owners were their daughter and son-in-law. I believe I met her when I was there before they opened and Viejo San Quintin in town was recommended. Nice young lady, very interested in customer service. I ordered a steak "medio rojo" and when it was served she came over to see that everything was ok. "Let's see", I said and cut the steak. Nope, no medio rojo, it was "bien cocido". She immediately apologized and offered to bring another, explaining that they were training a new cook. I then said there was a way to know how a steak was cooked without cutting it open and showed her the old trick of pressing different parts of your palm with a finger.
"Oh, you must be a chef!", she said. I grinned and said if you call flipping burgers at White Castle when I was a teenager, being a chef.

Bajahowodd - 2-15-2010 at 02:52 PM

Yep. Same ownership. Same family. I'm just guessing, but I suspect the main reason Jardines Restaurant is not open for breakfast is because it tends to be a lower profit meal. Thus, they choose not to run two restaurants for breakfast.

La Pinta, or Desert Inn in San Quintin was bought by Los Pinos, and I believe also the Old Mill (Restaurant). Desert Inn for sure. It's being fixed up, but is still open. Should be a great place right at the beach to stay for this summer. I have a amigo that will be working when it's done.

Also a great RV park next door to Jardines...Marita's parents own it. If your looking for a place with hook ups.

Yeah but isn't the Desert Inn $100usd/night?

True that... but right now it's $39.00 U.S. Some don't mind paying to be by the beach. You've seen where it's located, it's the best location in San Quintin. They just need to get a good restaurant, and great service, but their location, with the killer balcony....I'll try it at least once.

Think it was $70.00-$100. bucks before it was bought, and most everyone already knew that.

Bajahowodd - 2-17-2010 at 04:43 PM

OK. I'll agree that it is in a wonderful location. It always made me wonder why it was that the original owners, El Camino Real put it out there, when the whole idea was to provide lodging and food to travelers driving the newly paved Highway 1. Given that its basic architecture and amenities were just as spare as all the other hotels in the chain, it would only make sense that a buyer with any vision would recognize that given the size and location of the property, it could well become a destination, if it had a greater feel of comfort.

Right now, I am just a tad curious if perhaps the $39 rate referred to by TonyC may come with an unwelcome amount of construction. Just asking.

They lost alot of the local business when they moved the restaurant. Jardines as a place to stay, and eat for us is great.

Didn't someone say they'er going to open another restauant in town to get the locals back?

[Edited on 2-17-2010 by TonyC]

Bajahowodd - 2-17-2010 at 05:23 PM

Last time I was in Jardines restaurant, it was filled with locals. Appears that Viejo San Quintin does breakfast and lunch, while Jardines is the dinner spot. I imagine that if and when Guillermo and Carmen build out their planned hotel rooms, it might afford them the reason to open Jardines para Desayuno. But, right now, with a handful of rooms, it obviously does not make economic sense.

Martyman - 2-17-2010 at 05:23 PM

Tony C.
Please keep us posted on that $39 rate at the Desert Inn.
I had a memorable new years eve in the dunes there when I was 21. Five people and three sleeping bags. Love those baja memories!! Thanks

Bajahowodd - 2-17-2010 at 05:25 PM

Pay for a room and then sleep in a sleeping bag? You looking for a $39 shower and toilet?

Martyman - 2-18-2010 at 09:35 AM

No;
We didn't get a room, just had a campfire and saved the room money for tequila. When I was 21 I'd sleep peacefully on a pile of rocks!

RV Park is called Los Olivos...

The former 'Desert Inn', 'La Pinta', 'El Presidente' on the beach south of San Quintin is now called the Hotel Mision Santa Maria (owned by the Los Pinos group, who also now own the Cataviña hotel that was a Desert Inn, La Pinta, El Presidente and have renamed it: Hotel Mision Cataviña).

These Los Pinos tomato growing folks also own Rancho Grande at Gonzaga Bay, and have had hotel plans for there the past 12 years+. Pavement is only 3 miles away, now.

While we did not stay at the hotel, we did have lunch and walk through the magnificent garden.

Lunch was very good and the staff was attentive, without being annoying. Would definitely go back to the restaurant and although we are reasonably close, would like to partake of the hotel.

Summation... beautiful...

Bajahowodd - 5-16-2013 at 05:04 PM

Been staying at Jardines since they first opened as a hotel. Carmen actually gave us a tour of what was once she and Guillermo's home. Our first stay was in a room that Carmen said was once their dining room.

That said, Carmen, Guillermo, Esmeralda and Carlos are wonderful hosts. And a shout out to Fernando at the front desk, too.

wessongroup - 5-16-2013 at 05:26 PM

Thanks for the bump :):)

Tree - 5-17-2013 at 04:55 PM

This place is the best in San Quintin. Our group (compadres trail riders) make at least one trip a year down there on dirt bikes and the owner is always friendly and appreciative of our business. I turn everyone I know (my fishing and dirt bike friends) on to this place. Great rooms, great prices, and a great restaurant. Great staff that some of my buddies hit the town with after hours.

Bajahowodd - 5-17-2013 at 05:03 PM

A couple of other things to share.

Esmeralda, the co-host of the restaurant, with her husband Carlos, who is the daughter of Guillermo is really fun to chat with. She was born in Berkeley, California.

She and Carlos also operate the Viejo San Quintin restaurant just North on the main drag next to the hospital on the West side of the road. Probably the main reason there is no breakfast service at Jardines.

We've had some great breakfasts at Viejo San Quintin. Highly recommended, especially for those staying at the hotel and heading North. I never understood why they didn't post something at the hotel about the other restaurant.

Her father Guillermo told me that all the work he has done on Jardines was a legacy for Esmeralda's children.

We called when we got cell service heading North, usually as we entered El Rosario. Fernando always had a room or two available. But that was then.

Guillermo did tell me that he had though about building cabanas behind the present hotel. I guess it's up to how far he wants to go.

Stayed at Hotel Jardines two weeks ago. Great find. Great rates. Very relaxing and beautiful. I personally don't know how they make any money with those low rates and the extensive gardens and the upkeep therewith. LOve the restaurant, great menu and reasonable prices. Nice bar. Vey clean rooms, great big bathrooms, all new tile. Drove from the Serenidad in Mulege to Hotel Jardines in same day. The Serenidad sucks by comparison in my opinion. Had dinner at the Serenidad the night before getting to Hotel Jardines... Serendidad woefully understaffed. The poor bartender was running around trying to make drinks and take everybodies' food order at the same time. Makes me wonder where the heck the ownership/management people were.

Hotel Jardines was just the opposite of the Serenidad.

They usually limit pets now days to the inside rooms, so only a few rooms available. Good idea to have reservations when you have mascotas.....

Don't Let The Pictures Fool You!!!!!
It's way better than it looks. I did not used to encourage publicity. But if they want to expand and grow it a bit, I am in favor of that.

The Serenidad has been a great place for a long time. Don Johnson, the owner and a part of Bajas legend is now an elderly man, not well. That is not an excuse for its current state, its a reason. I hope things turn around for him. There are few people (customers) in Mulege theses days and all business is suffering.

Thursday night the hotel mulege was full...the noria full....the las terzas full...
even the squid had people....

I think the correct statement is...there are few americans and Canadians in mulege these days...

schools out and the Mexicans are vacationing

This is one thread that it was good to see bumped. Jardines is a very unique place. It is no wonder it is so difficult to get a room there anymore, especially one of the dog friendly rooms. It is usually quite a surprise the first time someone walks onto the grounds and then sees one of those bright, beautiful rooms. While it was easier for us before they limited the dog rooms, we do understand, especially for people who are very allergic to dogs.

For dog friendly, the Hotel Mission Santa Maria is very nice and right on the beach. Then again, one person around here once referred to people as wanting to drag their filthy dogs into a hotel room and suggested they leave them home. Some people don't understand that for many of us, they are family and have purer souls than many people.
