Alfonsinas

Does anyone know if they still have the tether ball pole on the beach? I was planning on bringing down a new ball if the pole is still there.

If you are staying at the motel be prepared as the rates have gone up AGAIN!:no::no:
$60 a nite for one double bed room
$70 a nite for two double beds 7 $10 extra per persons.
We cancelled!
Im sure its because they are the ONLY game in town!:mad:

baja Steve - 2-29-2008 at 07:08 PM

Yep. It was there about three weeks ago

azvazquez - 2-29-2008 at 07:32 PM

Thanks, I'll hang a new ball on it next Saturday!

Wait and see what happens when the pavement comes through there..... oh my! This is just the beginning. Still, $60 for a double doesn't seem that bad when you think about where you are.... what a beautiful area of Baja! The days of cheap Baja are quickly disappearing.

ALFONSINA'S, San Luis Gonzaga

David K - 3-1-2008 at 09:47 AM

Located on a sand spit (which connects with San Luis Gonzaga Island at low tide).

Bahia San Luis Gonzaga is to the north of the sand spit (sometimes called 'Willard Bay').

The larger Ensenada de San Francisquito (also called 'Gonzaga Bay' by many) is to the south.

Whatever you call the bay, Alfonsina's is beautiful location and to many, what Baja is all about!

Motel and restaurant, as seen from the beach:

View from restaurant:

Clear water and sea dog:

Great food! The squarecircle and his shrimp dinner:

Great hosts! Antonio and Marta (in center):

Coffee Man on the patio. Anyone know if he is still around?

This is pretty obvious but I'll play the "Where's This" game:

El Camote - 3-1-2008 at 10:23 PM

Stunning photos, I especially love the aerials. It's been too long since I was there and I have to ask, what happened to Irma? :o

Is the food still as good?

Is this Irma with Antonio? If so she was there in 2004.

Last time I was there, about a year ago, the food was still incredible. I would say, the best fish dinner I have ever had--it equals or beats any fine cuisine anywhere IMHO.

David K - 3-3-2008 at 09:23 AM

Ken, the Where's this game photo is Hwy. 1 and 'Hwy. 5' junction at Laguna Chapala... verdad?

El Camote, Irma went back to the city (?) and Antonio brought his new wife Marta to Alfonsina's to take over the cocina.

Nena, those are the finest aerial photos on the Internet of Gonzaga, thank you for posting them again!

tripledigitken - 3-3-2008 at 09:28 AM

Nena,

Very nice photos of a special place. Are you holding back anymore?

Verdad David. ++Ken++

Natalie Ann - 3-3-2008 at 11:40 AM

Well I looked for a picture of the tether ball pole in an attempt to keep this thread right on track.... couldn't find the picture, sorry.

David - Certainly these are not the best aerial's of Gonzaga on the net, but I agree they're real nice to view. Steve and I can take some of the credit as photogs, but a great deal of credit goes to our piloto - Nomad name Cap. He's wonderful about flying low, taking another glide by when we want extra shots. We hope to have way more in a couple of months.:tumble::spingrin::bounce::dudette:

Here's one more - shows a better view of the location.

Nena

Ken Bondy - 3-3-2008 at 12:07 PM

Nena, disagree. Those ARE the best aerial shots of Gonzaga on the net. The low golden light is just magnificent.

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 12:32 PM

Agree with Ken, these are the BEST! What a magic place. Glad to hear it is still alive and well.

Nice dreamy image, Nena.

The sky is a bit washed out though, don't you think?

Natalie Ann - 3-3-2008 at 02:34 PM

Gracias amigos - the photogs and piloto thank you.

And Igor - you're absolutely right... that sky's totally blown out.:lol::lol:

Nena is that airplane a Twin Bonanza (Beech Model 50)?
++Ken++

[Edited on 3-3-2008 by Ken Bondy]

Natalie Ann - 3-3-2008 at 03:01 PM

Ken - no Bonanza.... Piper Apache... wonderful plane.
Cap sez he's gettin' a different one. I'm lobbying for my son to buy this one - keep it in the family.:dudette:

Nena

Ken Bondy - 3-3-2008 at 03:34 PM

OK I see it now, an Apache. I am in love with Twin Bonanzas and I guess I saw what I wanted to see :) They are very rare but the people who own them just absolutely LOVE them. Thanks Nena,

I have several pics of the "old" Alfonsinas and a few from the Memorial day bash and Turkey day dinner from many moons ago but cant figure out how to post them...anyone ever do the Memorial day party or Thanksgiving at Alfonsinas? Do they still have the big party over Memorial day weekend?

Here's a photo of Thanksgiving Dinner at Alfonsina's in 2002:

Chris and I were invited to sit with Doug Bowles and his other guests (Mike and Maureen) for a great feast, hosted by Alfonsina's son Roman Card##as. I flew in Doug's plane from Alfonsina's to Oceanside in 1999.

There was one the following Thanksgiving, as well... We were camping at Brandi's place (La Cantina de Floyd). Sunny days and cold, cold nights!

Really nice images everyone... it's soooo nice to wake up and see new photos of the place I long to be.

Pascuale - I notice some stacked rocks in that truly beautiful first image of yours - cool. Also I'm wondering (gonna display my ignorance here) what are the red 'ball' type things which show inside some of the fishes?

Greg - That is one glorious image you posted! Thanks.

Those red balls are the swim bladders of the fish expanding out of their mouths when they come up from the depths. Some fish are more prone to having them expand. Totoaba always seem to have them coming out which makes it hard to release them at times because the fish will float instead of swim back down. For this we will sometimes pop it with a hook and send em back (unless were really hungry).
