Baja Dogs

Beachgirl - 4-8-2008 at 04:17 PM

Seems to me that everyone has a dog or two (or more) in Baja. A great many are rescued dogs, which is so wonderful. Ours is not. He is such a handful that I really don't think we need more than one...Arturo...plus, he has a little brain damage. This gives him a very curious gait, as he has little control over his backend, but his front end doesn't know about it. Here he is after one of those rainstorms this last winter in Mulege....So this one is my "Dirty Dog" photo.

Would just love to see some Baja dog photos. How about it?

Libbie is SO cute! Are you down there all year, or part of the time with her? We are shooting for half a year in Sequim, WA at our lavender farm, and the other part of the year at our house in Mulege

Beachgirl.....looks are deceiving. behind that cute face lurks the brain of a Lab.

When in Baja, Libbie likes to hang at the Baja Country Club in Ensenada and also with her friends, Barney, Sadie and Lucy out Punta Banda way. She is also a fan of bajabound2005's cooking talents!!!!

Fun subject! I've posted photos of my Baja dog Ham before, but for fun here are a few more... Ham will be 10 this year. She was a street pup in Bahia de los Angeles before I 'adopted' her. She must have been only 8 - 10 weeks old then, starving and eating lizard bones and dead fish on the beach with her mom and sisters.

Here's Ham in 1998 at the turtle tanks (Campo Archelon) in Bahia de los Angeles:

Good vibes to you for giving her a good dogs life.

I am having such a good time with all these photos! Please...more! Can't say enough about it...Artie is my first dog. What an experience! How expressive, sensitive, stubborn, adorable...well...you know. My "Dirty Dog" photo was taken just after we bought our house in Mulege, and before we managed to score a full roll of chicken wire. The wrought iron fencing is just wide enough for Artie to otherwise jam right through and in between, chasing anything from birds to other dogs. 85% of all Jack Russells die unnatural deaths. Just too curious. So in the photo he is tied to a rope. Now he has full run of the joint and loves every minute. We have been watching the Dog Whisperer to try and train ourselves...not Artie. Isn't that the trick? Train the humans, not the dog!

They like any beach in Baja

They like to collect things on the beach

They love running in Baja

And relaxing at the end of the day.

Marie-Rose, have you tried posting pictures using another place like photobucket? I find it much easier.

Okay, You got Me to Stop Lurking w/ This Thread

Mexpedition - 4-9-2008 at 07:53 PM

I have been a lurker on this site for quite some time, and love (most) of the threads and the Baja online community you guys have created. I have meant to register for some time, but for whatever reason I have not until now. This thread has finally got me to join in the fun as this past month was our Baja rescue dog Banjo's Fifth birthday.

We have a place on the beach south of Ejido Erendira. Five years ago, our neighbors Stewart and Kathy were turning off Highway 1 on to the road to Erendira. Despite it being dark, they saw a large cardboard box next to a small shrine that is at the turnoff. Stewart saw something poking its head out of the box. Kathy said he was seeing things. He stopped and got out and discovered it was a box of puppies, too young to be away from their Mom. He gathered them up (some had already escaped the box) and brought them to their lot.

We arrived the next day. He had them in a makeshift dog run to let them get some exercise (and trap unwary humans into taking them off his hands). Needless to say, our two boys (12 and 8 at the time) kept bringing assorted versions of Baja mongrel by our house, pleading and crying. My wife, Christine, folded, but demanded that it be a girl.

Anyhoo, here is a picture (if I was intelligent enough to follow David K.'s directions on posting photos) of her on New Year's Eve a couple of years back. She started celebrating too early, and did not make it until midnight. Thankfully, she no longer smokes (same for us), but keeping her (and us) away from the Don Julio is another matter.

bajaguy - 4-9-2008 at 07:56 PM

Welcome aboard, always good to have a "lurker" join us!!!!

Waiting for your puppy photo!!!

Mexpedition - 4-9-2008 at 07:59 PM

Dang. What did I do wrong? I reduced the size. Followed the directions, I am confused (My wife just said, "So what is new?").

I will try one more time, and perhaps try again tomorrow

Welcome. I find it much easier to post pictures using a site like photobucket---if you continue to have trouble, you might try it. Just reduce the size of your picture---I use the Windows resizer, upload to photobucket or another such site, copy the img box and paste into your post here.

I am considering doing this as a general practice also. I do have problems with it though and this thread is an example. Photo posters using an off site host upload their photos TOO big. You cannot see the whole picture on your computer screen and have to shift it around to see the whole thing. This also makes the post so wide you can't read the whole thing without shifting the screen over and back.

Folks should down size their images so they fit on the screen and then I love it. :saint:

Mexpedition - 4-11-2008 at 12:41 PM

Thanks for the tips. I am going to force my teenager to show me how photobucket works this weekend and try it that way too. Until then, here is (with any luck) Banjo (also known to her boyfriends as Banjalina Jolie) with her little sister, Millie, also a rescue pup. I love all the baja dogs (native and otherwise).

I have noticed several distinct subspecies of Baja natives. There must be a breeder of purebred Loreto street dogs as I have seen them elsewhere on the peninsula. The other subspecies I come across often are similar to mine, and known for their enormous ears. I call them the Bat-eared Baja Barking Dog.

pups5r.JPG - 29kB

Mexpedition - 4-11-2008 at 12:44 PM

I've learned a valuable training tool for them. The only way I can get them to face the camera for a picture is to say, "Want to go to Baja?" Amazingly, it even works in Baja. However, this one was taken at Grandma Judy's in New Mexico.

Has anyone seen this dog in Todos Santos?

erin - 4-11-2008 at 08:15 PM

Hello,

We recently stayed at The Hotelito in Todos Santos and fell in love with the owner's dogs, who accompanied us to the beach every day. Upon returning to the states this week we learned that one of them, Benito, went missing Wednesday night. We are so sad, as he's such a lovable character. The owner has put a posting in The Onion, but I thought it might not hurt to keep spreading the word. Here's the information:

Small White Dog Lost In La Cachora - He disappeared Wednesday evening. Small white dog answers to Ben or Benito. No collar on as he had just had a bath unfortunately. Please call 612 145 0099. Reward offered - Jenny Armit, jennyarmit@mac.com, 612 1450099, Todos Santos

Thank you so much!

Bronco- Schooch is a neat looking puppy. I've never seen a Newfoundland in person and had no idea they are THAT big.

They're often trained as rescue dogs aren't they? That poor lady didn't look like she was in need of rescue until he sat on her lap!

Batdogs of Baja

Sharksbaja - 4-14-2008 at 12:12 PM

Do you wonder why Baja dogs have those big bat ears? The reason is that those ears will help radiate off the heat.

Other than some Baja dogs being smokers and some having bad teeth, anyone notice that lots of Baja dogs have really big ears? Why is that? :?::bounce:

Like the elephant...the ears are used as a cooling device.

gringorio - 4-15-2008 at 06:38 AM

So, for all those street dogs there's sort of a process of natural selection going on? The ones with big ears survive the heat and reproduce and the cute ones lure in the soft hearted gringos and get good homes? :?::lol:
