I was at the dealership today and grabbed the new Tacoma '09 brochure... and sure noticed the familiar photos... the road between Puertecitos and Gonzaga Bay!

I may share some with you all later...

I think that is cool how committed Toyota is with keeping their 4WD vehicles grounded in the dirt. I think Nissan is the only other OEM that comes to my mind when thinking of keeping their advertising focused on real-world. Good bit of information, David!

I must add Hummer. Their H3 ads are pure backcountry, too. Not to forget Jeep, either...

David you sure do love your truck!

David K - 7-14-2008 at 10:24 PM

It does the job and doesn't break down... Because the '01 Tacoma was perfect, no way would I jump ship when the 5 year lease was up.

The '05 has had a couple of issues (but no mechanical breakdowns) and I have reported them here... but they are way outweighed by the truck's performance and comfort. It is almost 3 years old, almost 80,000 miles and oh, what a great feeling!

See http://vivabaja.com/msm for the truck on Baja's toughest road (that goes somewhere cool)!

The whole story from autospies.com

PBS??? The left hates trucks and SUVs... no wonder they made you believe that was the news!

Here is what I just saw after doing a search:

Toyota Halts Tundra Production - Prius Production To Be Moved Stateside
Toyota is responding to changes in consumer demand and improving the production efficiency and stability of its North American operations by adjusting production mix at three plants. The changes include the addition of the Prius hybrid sedan to its North American lineup.

The changes are as follows:

-- Prius will be built at a plant under construction in Blue Springs, Miss. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2010. Prius, which will join the Kentucky-built Camry Hybrid as the second Toyota hybrid built in North America, enables Toyota to better respond to increased consumer demand for hybrid vehicles.

-- The Highlander mid-size SUV, originally scheduled to be built in Mississippi, will now be manufactured in Princeton, Ind., beginning in Fall 2009.

-- Production of the Tundra full-size pick-up truck, currently built in Indiana and Texas, will be consolidated at the San Antonio plant in Spring 2009.

In addition, Toyota will temporarily suspend Tundra and Sequoia production beginning August 8 due to the declining overall market for full size trucks and SUVs. Production is scheduled to resume in early November. Team members at both facilities, as well as the Huntsville, Ala. plant that builds Tundra and Sequoia engines, will continue to be provided work.

DK-What do you mean the left hates trucks and suvs? Are you and expert on this or is this your biased opinion? Please clarify. ..

Ah good Zac... what are you driving in Baja... and why?

As for what I said, that's what freedom of speech is all about, isn't it? Casa Manzana said right here that he got that 'news' from PBS (that's the government network)... and they made him believe that the big truck production was over! The truth (or the entire story) was quite different!

Nothing mean intended... but pretty hilarious that PBS would only give part of a story to satisfy their producer's bias.

I am all about the whole story... whole truth... so everyone can make a good decision based on the facts! Isn't that a good thing?

Perhaps you missed one of these many news stories over the years. http://www.mindfully.org/Heritage/2003/ELF-FBI-$2_5M-SUVs23aug03.htm E.L.F. is just slightly left of center.

3 of the pages from the new brochure...

surfer jim - 7-15-2008 at 05:24 PM

I wonder if the shocks melted on this road like mine have...(twice).....

TMW - 7-15-2008 at 06:10 PM

I'm with you Jim. I've torn up or worn out Rancho, Bilstein, KYB and monroe shocks on that road. A couple of years ago I melted the rubber boots on my front Bilsteins on my Toyota. Last month I broke the bottom off a Rancho which in turn cut my CV boot throwing out the grease on my GMC.

Pappy Jon - 7-15-2008 at 07:03 PM

So it's not just me? Glad to hear it. I usually end up "bluing" my shock shafts and blowing out the top seal.

David K - 7-15-2008 at 08:06 PM

Surfer Jim... you drive a Chevy truck! (but with the yellow Bisteins, too.. yes?)

My first Tacoma with the yellow Bilstein shocks never had a problem... even at speed on that road before it got beat up in Nov. '05.

My new Tacoma (bigger/ four door) also didn't have a problem with it's Bilstein shocks on that road... but the speed is much reduced from when I had my previous truck... so not a good comparison.

As most of you know, the new, bigger Tacoma rear suspension was too soft (same springs and shocks as before, perhaps) so I added Bilstein 5100's and Ride Rite Air Springs (air bags) to stop the bottoming out. That has worked totally sweet!

Once with chevy and again with Dodge....both times with Bilsteins.....

Bajaboy - 7-15-2008 at 09:54 PM

The irony for me is that this evening, before I read your post, Tracy and I were talking about the Toyota Tundra. I said something to the effect that I"ll bet Toyota is taking it on the chin with the Tundra now that gas prices have risen so much. Common business sense led me to come to this conclusion not my political beliefs,

No worries here. One question, though, DK based on our lingering discussions of past...if Toyota produced a Tacoma that got better gas mileage, would you buy it? Of course you would. No reason the general public and/or government shouldn't demand higher fuel standards.

bajadogs... My world view comes from many places... including traveling around the world, living and going to school in another country (Australia), a great father who taught me the wisdom and fairness of free enterprise capitalism in a republican form of government... and all the good conservative ideals that made America so great others risk their lives to come here for that opportunety we have. In Australia, back in 1970 he showed me the foolishness of socialism competing with private business and the superior quality of service that private business provides over government run health care, transportation and other things.

It really is a shame that more or all Americans don't see how good it is here compared to the rest of the world (services, human rights, justice, quality, etc.).

... and you just thought I was a ditto-head!

David K - 7-15-2008 at 10:03 PM

Hi Zac,

I am all for new technology! A hybrid Tacoma that performs and isn't rediculous in price or looks would be great! Perhaps a hybrid 4WD Highlander SUV?

I install the best new technology irrigation, because it uses less water as there is vertually no waste, and plants grow better.

I am into conservation... new technology... etc.

I am not into a government dictating what and how I can drive or the artificial costs in the form of taxes levied upon us by a bloated government.

We have plenty of petroleum to carry us through to when hydrogen or whatever fuel type autos are ready for us... We just have to get it... from our own territory... Bring it on!

Throw this into OFF-TOPIC

Services - not a result of a conservative program
human rights - NOT a result of conservative program (quite the opposite)
justice - Read "The Betrayal of America" by Bugliosi
quality - can't argue with you there

DK - You make no sense when you pretend to be Rush

dk, i don't know, but you started the political rants with your knee jerk diatribe in response to a newservice (PBS) smarter than your favored propogandist.

I have an 07 Tacoma work truck and I also wondered why no disk in the rear. My 04 GMC has disc all around and I was surprised to find that GM went back to drums in the rear in the last year or two. It may have been on select models and since corrected the problem with the disk and switched back. In talking to some of my mechanic friends the problem was the parking brake had problems. I can relate to that since I had a brake job on my GMC done at the dealer at 50,000 miles and they had to replace the parking brake shoes and the rear pads but the front pads were OK. I just replaced the front pads last weekend at 68,000. On my 93 Toyota I replaced front pads about every 30,000 miles but the rear drums lasted over 100,000 miles.

Really??

So, what I said ISN'T true, and this line is a 'diatribe'?:
"PBS??? The left hates trucks and SUVs... no wonder they made you believe that was the news!"

To make you and the other libs happy, the correct (PC) reply should have been:
PBS... now there's an unbiased news service! Since the left loves trucks and SUVs I guess the automotive news service is lying and Toyota is ending Tundra production in the USA! How sad, if only they ate dolphin safe tuna maybe they would change their minds???:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I don't know goat, I think I would rather post truth and facts that that kind of hog wash!:light:

Happy closed mindness!

My '01 with front disc/ rear drum was fine... no brake issues at all... It was ABS.

My '05 also has front disc, rear drum... works fine, but I do not like the ABS in it, off highway or slick roads. Off highway, when I need to mash the brake pedal, it 'growls' back at me and the brake pedal feels like it is going to the floor. I wish they left the same set up that I had in the '01. Slick roads, freeway off ramps have startled me a couple times, too. Yes, I have rerported the conditions to which this happens and am told that is normal ABS noise/ action.

There must be a reason beyond economics that the pickups have drums in the back? But I sure would like to be able to disconnect the ABS when driving on dirt roads (it does disconnect when the rear diff is locked).
