Someone asked me for this and since I cant remember who, I thought that I would post it for all to enjoy.
Anyone else have photos of art that has been lost due to development, changes of ownership etc.

Oh! so many memories are brought to surface by these Photos~!!

The women to the immediate right is Virginia Oremus . Virginia and her Husband built a Sailboat at Moss Pt. in Calif. and started around the World with another Couple.
The other boat had problems and went into repair in La Paz.
The Oremus'S decided to sail the Sea of Cortez, which they did for 5 years deciding that they were in Paradise and did not need to Sail around the World!!

After 5 years touching every place they could on the Cortez, they bought a small trail and decided to "Go Ashore". On the very day they were to move off the Boat, Mr. Oremus died of a Heart Attack while operating his Volkswagon Bus. He hit the Seawall!!

His Wife Virginia, May she rest in Peace, moved into the Trailer and became a regular at the Mission.
One day I took my Father -in-Law over to visit and fix her Screen Door. As we left He told me "I am going to Marry that beautifull Lady, Which he Did! Moving a Trailer onto the Property behindAlfreado"s Place. Later they returned to the States and had a Great 8 Years of Married Life.

Virginia pasted away at 97 years of age while in a Nursing Home in Florence Oregon.

Vinciente was the Bartender that served me a "Two Eyed Tequilla" on many occasions.

The Tile inspired my Wife too have a Tile on the entrance to Rancho Sonrisa

Oh! those were the Days!! Thanks again for the Memories!

Skeet/Loreto - 7-17-2008 at 10:07 AM

Viciente: was still working at the Little Bar to the South of the Mission a couple of years ago, Did not see him in April.

Anybody in Loreto know if he is still around????

Skeet/Loreto - 7-17-2008 at 10:15 AM

David: Many years ago thew Mission had a Chef named Arturo who could cook some of the best Quail I have ever eaten,
On Friday nites he would have a special and all of us ameican residents would eat and Dance .
Bill and Betty Riffee, Sandy Harrison, Margret Kimbrough, Fred Shields, Tio Don O"Niel and one of his Girl Friends{Before he met Ann} Don Rosendahl, Ben Benner, Jamie Parker, Von.and a couple I have forgotten>

For many years we were the only American residents of Loreto.

A few years later Arturo got a Job at Gurrero Negro at the place near the Malamarino Cafe and Trailer Park.

Oh. Loreto has changed, some good, some Bad!

Good stuff to remember the past...

My first trip to Loreto was in 1973, before the highway was completed... stayed at the Playas de Loreto... was very nice then!

(in 1966, the main transpeninsular road went through Comondu from south of Concepcion Bay... why we missed seeing Loreto then). My dad flew in with Ed Tabor on his DC-3 out of Calexico a few times to stay at the Flying Sportsman Lodge in the late 1960's.

In 1976 we had a travel trailer and stayed at the RV park in the Flying Sportsman Lodge compound... also at Puerto Escondido when you could camp right on the bay!

LaTijereta - 7-17-2008 at 12:38 PM

Vincente now is working at Hotel Salvterrra, acorss form the Pemex station.. His wife Rosa still runs Campos Ground Services for the airport (But with fewer flights:o)
His nephew, Jimie, opened Stoker's Reef bar just off the Malacon..

Arturo.. moved over the GN, and was cheif at the old resturant next to El Morro Hotel (on the west side)..but that closed many year's ago:?:

As for Skeet's "Friday Group" what a party.. He remembered to mention my Pops in that gritty bunch:lol:

I have some other images to post later..

LaTijereta - 7-17-2008 at 08:50 PM

Pto Escondido..
This what is looked like when we camped there..

We kept the boat at anchor, and took supplies out on the raft..The whole bay was ours!

I love the great stories and photos of the past. I wish I was introduced to Baja much sooner.
I have much to catch up on...Everyday something new. Thanks.

Skeet/Loreto - 7-18-2008 at 04:34 AM

Thanks for the Photos;
Boy Howdy, Did we have some fun when Von first arrived in Loreto!!

Jamie and Marie Parker built a place on Jordon, I bought Joane Fontiane"s place next door where the old IceHouse stood., Charlie Leech came in , then Tony Kittenger and the Street Filled up!
You could hear the Music from the La Cabanna all the way over to the Hotel Oasis.
Jamie Parker made a deal with someone and built the First Condos directly to the South of the Mission.
And the Music and Dancing was great!!, The fishing was very much like it is today, Lots of Dorado, YellowTail, Bait! It was just in a little Closer.

After the Road Opened things started to change, TV came in, we started getting Cottage Cheese from the States.
I started too go into Business selling Girls Bras and Panties.Everytime a Van came in loaded with Panties and Bras, the Girls lined up for Blocks!!

I am rambling, Try to control my Good Thought of Baja .

Thanks for the Info/Photos. I have some of the Malocon before it was filled in and the Sea Wall built.

One nite we were having a Party at Gail's Place prior to going to the Misson. I was escorting Sandy Harrison when she stepped into a Hole in the Middle of the Street. It was filled with Septic Juice. We were alone, what a Sight watching little ole Skeeter trying to get Great Big Blond Sandy out of that Sewer Hole!!

Course we had a couple of Beers before we started for the Party. That always helped!

Hope to see you next year. When will you be in Loreto?

Alfredo.1999.50k_jpg_file(675).jpg - 39kB

Skeet/Loreto - 7-19-2008 at 03:25 AM

Alfredo Ramierz- From Sacramento Calif. Met Gail at the Airport in Mexicali on one of my trips South, she was a "Skinny little Blond" escorting some of the first of Alfredo's Fisherman to Loreto.

The old fellow with the Beard arrive in Loreto a met a women who was a Hollywood Writer. Virginia and I attended their wedding at the Original Cesar"s.
He ended up getting Run out of Town in a Volkswagon after striking and injuring a young Girl and refusing to pay for the Medicals!!
He was a regular at xmas time setting on a Donkey in front of the "El Nido".

Short story about Marie, who was the Town Gossip before the Canadian named Jacque's Wife arrived.
Anyway when I met my present wife and told my friends I was getting Married to a much Younger women, Mariestarted talking!
I fiqured I sould see how fast the word could get around Loreto so on the first day I arrived back , I saw Marie next door and walked over holding my self between the Legs and complaining of Pain, Of course Marie ask me what was wrong? I told her I had been to Houston Texas for a Penis Implant!
It took about two hours before I got a visit from a friend that had Just Heard that I had an Impant because I was going to marry a young Women!

Last time I saw Marie was on the Airplane headed to Loreto with Jaime's Ashes to be spread on the Sea of Cortez.

Please let me know if the stories get boring!

We are blessed that Doug has maintained Baja Nomad online for over 18 years now!

I wish there was an easy way to restore the many photos that were lost when there were upgrades made... at least in the Trip Reports forum.

Last night I was going through the old posts, looks there was a database crash at some point and older stuff lost?

Where did you guys migrate from originally? Sounds like there was some drama on the old board... (Drama on Bajanomads? no way! :smug:)

Yes indeed!
We came from Amigos de Baja (was at www.bajanet.com) run by Earle and Eric Robitaille, and Trish Ramsey. The site crashed in 2003, about a year after Doug created the new Baja Nomad forums. They elected to let the site stay dead and give them a break so they could spend more time fishing! As I was doing the Viva Baja parties (2000-2003), I had many emails of the Amigos. After confirming with Doug he could handle the 'mob' I alerted my guest list that we could have a new home on Doug's forum. There also was another forum some went to, called Baja.net. That one was like a frat house... It didn't last.

Here are photos of the Amigos de Baja team at my Viva Baja #1 in October 2000:

Earle is a Baja Nomad, 'Fang' and his last post on Nomad was this past July:

Many thanks to Phil C, MJS, Santiago & Bajaboy for their kind remarks regarding our old Amigos Bd. It was a labor of love for Eric, Trish and me as fishing Baja was our major love in life.

My dad had introduced my brother Jim and I to fishing all over the northern portions of Baja in the late 1930's just before WW2.

After his return home from the war in 1946, all our summer vacations were taken Ensenada or San Felipe.

I started both my pre-teen sons doing the same at Ed Tabor's old Flying Fisherman's spot in Loreto and they still retain their love of the area & it's people.

A great deal of credit is owed to Doug for keeping this Nomad site up & running over these many years. I can tell you from experience that it can be frustrating at times.

The problem we had was that our goal was accurate & timely information on fishing & travel conditions that were near impossible to get any other way at that time (pre- internet). But after 10-12 years we found a upsetting transition taking place on the Amigos Bd.---the site was moving towards becoming a soapbox for a growing group of malcontents and nut cases who saw it as a means to spread their venom about people, events & places around the peninsula and use it as a political forum for their wacked-out theories.

When we realized that we were spending too much time babysitting & redacting trash, it was time to move on to better things.

We enjoyed the experience as a whole & would not have missed the opportunity to meet & get to know so many of our readers over the years. It was just the frustrations that the wackos had interjected into the process that caused the endeavor to lose it's appeal.

Don't let the wackos and trolls win ! Ignore them & they will slither away. Keep Nomads main focus just as it is & let Doug know how much we all appreciate his efforts.

I last saw and talked with Eric in Loreto in Feb. 2017 at the bookstore when I gave a presentation of my book and then again on the road to San Javier when he stopped where Mike Younghusband and I were stopped.

The upstairs bar at the mission hotel brings back memories. And the Oasis hotel near by I was only about 14 back in 72 and was the designated driver. I slept n the back seat of the car until everyone was ready to go home. Then woke up to drive home.

I begged rides with Billl Riffe in his plane to the Flying Sportsman and spent summers in Loreto when NO americans lived there. Great memories!

Many memories of the Mission Hotel and the bar going back 40+ years. Best not to recount them here.
