Mexican Insurance

dianaji - 8-15-2008 at 05:37 PM

I was told to be sure to get yearly mexican insurance. i was given a quote of $88 year. is this a good price? it is in Tijuana. perhaps there is a place closer to rosarito beach?

thanks, diana

Pescador - 8-15-2008 at 05:47 PM

Who knows. It all depends on what is covered and the amounts of coverage. I know of some health insurance that costs only $485 a year but it basically covers nothing except for some discounts.

Time out!!!

thebajarunner - 8-15-2008 at 05:58 PM

Maybe before we all jump in here we should find out what kind of insurance is being discussed??!!

Just a thought.

On the other hand, lately Nomaders have much more advice than good sense, so any topic seems to be open season, with or without any facts...

:?::?::?:

rpleger - 8-15-2008 at 06:10 PM

Sounds about...I get PL & PD for about $85 a year.

Sorry, that would be $83.00 a year...

dianaji - 8-15-2008 at 06:37 PM

oh, sorry, auto insurance! what's pL and PD?

dianaji - 8-15-2008 at 07:29 PM

to be more clear...

i want auto insurance for driving...not to insure my auto...mostly for in case of accident, etc. so they won't take me off to jail. yes, i am asking for advice, AND can anyone tell me a good insurance company and from their own experience yearly cost?

thank u all so much for your help...

Diana,
There is an insurer advertising it's services right here on Nomads. They are on the header.
Other than that you could look at Lewis & Lewis. Also you can join Discover Baja or Vagabundos Del Mar, and their liability only policies run about $78.00/year. There are also optional coverages for optional prices above the initial outlay. All policies have the same liability coverage, and the prices are fairly close.
I don't know what the company that advertises on Nomads charges. Just click on their site and get a free estimate.

wakemall - 8-15-2008 at 08:41 PM

PL - Personal Liability.
PD - Property Damage.

Get the insurance....

Bajaboy - 8-15-2008 at 08:49 PM

Sounds like a good deal to me...Lewis and Lewis for liability only is $123/year.

Diver - 8-15-2008 at 10:48 PM

We have found Lewis and Lewis to be consistently cheaper for basic policies.

Pescador - 8-16-2008 at 08:50 AM

The best way to actually compare is to do a comparison chart. List the basic liability coverage limits for each policy you are considering. The look at the other coverages like legal and compare those.
It is very much like saying a bottle of coke is $1.10 and it could be anywhere from 8 oz. to 64 oz. Big difference.
I did that kind of a comparison on a typical policy about a year ago when I was shopping and it was pretty amazing to see the difference in coverage.

David K - 8-16-2008 at 08:55 AM

She is talking about the driver being insured and not the auto.

Most of us use the companies named above (BajaBound.com, Discover Baja, Lewis & Lewis) to insure our auto...

I think the company that offers insurance for the driver (in any car) is International Gateway...

Edit, I did a search on Nomad for International Gateway and found a post by Fishin Rich who uses that company:

insurance

You can try--seguros comercial america in tijuana. 664-687-97-00 or 664-200-20-29. They are the largest insure in mexico. They also have a writer in san diego. international gateway--619-271-0572. It's funny but the US writer is cheaper than the mexican for the exact same coverage. I have been with this company for many many years. I filed a claim on a boat and a truck and both times things could not have run smoother. fishin rich

A spread sheet to figure out the "best" insurance.
Simply precious:?:

Maybe one might consider another process

#1 Find a Broker/Agent that knows what they are doing and has good references.

#2 Tell Broker to only quote companies that actually pay claims with some sense of ethics and morals.
This does not include AIG companies or any London Slippery Sands Mutual Companies

#3 Get references on the insurance company from people who have actually had claims.

#4 Ignore any references that have to do only with price.

#5 I'm really looking forward to NON renewing my Brokers License for annual Mexican fishing license.

Diana you can also insure your drivers lic only

Keri - 8-16-2008 at 05:08 PM

There is a lady in Rosarito and she speaks english. juanita roman 01152-661-100-2215. Insuring your drivers lic insures you for any car you drive. NOT the car through.k. She can also help you with your regular insurance. By the way Geoff at bajabound.com is great. try him too,k:yes:

vacaenbaja - 8-17-2008 at 08:21 AM

I second intenational gateway. They have been my choice for years. As David stated they are one of the best. You have to look at an insurance companies rating and how much assets they have to back up their claims. Do not expect any english to be spoken once you get past the boarder. Also
reaching the State side office for a claim can be hard too.
I have had fair and sucessful payment of a total on my car with them. But like anything in Baja the claim proceedure goes at the speed of molasses on a cold day. It can be
VERY trying and drawn out. But Their policies are recognized
and will keep you out of the cess pools that double as jails.

vacainbaja,

I'm trying to sort out this Mex ins also.
As with most everything in Mex, there
rarely is a difinative answer.
Lewis and Lewis, as posted, offers a
annual liability of $300,000 at $123
a yr. That is quite a bit of coverage.
Some of the lower quotes for
insurance have as low as $50,000 csl,
That amount in my opinion is too low.
Other popular brokers offer $100,000
coverage for $280 yr. Go figure.
One Mex Ins Co that I've read
positively about is 'Genworth'.
The question I have, is the Lewis and
Lewis Co. for $123 as responsive
as the $280 Co.? I would not buy a policy
with $50,000

hi,

i was told that bernie's insurance is $88 year from 2 people...

BERNIE'S MEXICAN EXPERIENCE $88 YR.

Ok, I did a straight liability policy with three of the recommended brokers.
Baja bound had only $150,000 liability limit,
Lewis and Lewis had $300,000
Sanborns had $300,000

I think that $300,000 is the minimum I would consider.

Legal coverage, which I consider mandatory is sketchy at best. Baja Bound says check with the policy,
Lewis and Lewis had $75,000
Sanborn has legal but $20,000 bond only

Medical payments to other party.

Baja Bound has $5,000 per person $25,000 total
Lewis and Lewis $5,000 per person $25,000 total
Sanborn has $10,000 per and $50,000 total

Prices are roughly:

Baja Bound $281.35
Lewis and L $123.00
Sanborn $289.08

Lewis and Lewis is selling a policy underwritten by Qualitas, while Baja Bound and Sanborn is selling a policy by Genworth.
Since I have received a couple of U2U's I thought it might prove helpful to post this info as how I start looking for policies and how to compare the basics.
I have personally used Lewis and Lewis for the last 10 years because of the coverage offered.

BajaGeoff - 8-21-2008 at 02:04 PM

Hello Pescador,

Just to clear up a bit of that info.....

Baja Bound does actually offer liability limits from 50K all the way up to 300K. It just depends on what policy and underwriter you select, since we work with two - Genworth Seguros and ACE Seguros. Our most basic liability policy starts at $140.53 which includes legal aid, bail bond, and roadside assistance.

The legal aid we offer is different for each underwriter, and has a number of variations in coverage depending on the situation (accident, theft, bodily injury, etc..) but generally speaking, the limit for bond is $30,000, and legal aid is either totally covered (no limit) or covered up to the liability limit you select for the policy.

The medical payments you mention above are actually for the occupants of the insured vehicle, not the other (third) party. Medical expenses for third parties are included in the liability coverage amounts. As an example, a liability policy of $150,000 would cover you for any damages to third parties, be it property or medical expenses, up to the amount of $150,000.

Diana, who started this post, called our office earlier this week. She wanted the bare minimum amount of liability coverage available at the cheapest price, and had been quoted $88 from Bernies. Since our policies had the additional features she was not interested in, and was obviously more expensive, I told her that Bernies was probably the best fit for her needs.

If anyone has more detailed questions, feel free to ask or send me a U2U. There are a variety of insurance options out there to suit everyones particular needs or situation, and I would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Auto insurance, geoff's reply

dianaji - 8-21-2008 at 02:11 PM

i must say that geoff was more than fair and helpful when i called...even by telling me to go with Bernie's. now i call that extremely generous! i would definitely recommend him for anyone looking for a more extensive policy. thank u, jeff.

Jim, are your examples for liability attached to a driver's license, a specific vehicle or does it matter?

Well, good...I was just about to go out to the car and get my policy for Bernie's info. He was head of the Cruz Roja..still may be, and the head of the shooting club (and in the background of one those pictures I posted a while back.) Good guy and his office staff speaks English.
