Who knows. It all depends on what is covered and the amounts of coverage. I know of some health insurance that costs only $485 a year but it basically covers nothing except for some discounts.

Time out!!!

Maybe before we all jump in here we should find out what kind of insurance is being discussed??!!

Just a thought.

On the other hand, lately Nomaders have much more advice than good sense, so any topic seems to be open season, with or without any facts...

Sounds about...I get PL & PD for about $85 a year.

Diana,
There is an insurer advertising it's services right here on Nomads. They are on the header.
Other than that you could look at Lewis & Lewis. Also you can join Discover Baja or Vagabundos Del Mar, and their liability only policies run about $78.00/year. There are also optional coverages for optional prices above the initial outlay. All policies have the same liability coverage, and the prices are fairly close.
I don't know what the company that advertises on Nomads charges. Just click on their site and get a free estimate.

We have found Lewis and Lewis to be consistently cheaper for basic policies.

The best way to actually compare is to do a comparison chart. List the basic liability coverage limits for each policy you are considering. The look at the other coverages like legal and compare those.
It is very much like saying a bottle of coke is $1.10 and it could be anywhere from 8 oz. to 64 oz. Big difference.
I did that kind of a comparison on a typical policy about a year ago when I was shopping and it was pretty amazing to see the difference in coverage.

She is talking about the driver being insured and not the auto.

Most of us use the companies named above (BajaBound.com, Discover Baja, Lewis & Lewis) to insure our auto...

I think the company that offers insurance for the driver (in any car) is International Gateway...

Edit, I did a search on Nomad for International Gateway and found a post by Fishin Rich who uses that company:

insurance

You can try--seguros comercial america in tijuana. 664-687-97-00 or 664-200-20-29. They are the largest insure in mexico. They also have a writer in san diego. international gateway--619-271-0572. It's funny but the US writer is cheaper than the mexican for the exact same coverage. I have been with this company for many many years. I filed a claim on a boat and a truck and both times things could not have run smoother. fishin rich

A spread sheet to figure out the "best" insurance.
Simply precious:?:

Maybe one might consider another process

#1 Find a Broker/Agent that knows what they are doing and has good references.

#2 Tell Broker to only quote companies that actually pay claims with some sense of ethics and morals.
This does not include AIG companies or any London Slippery Sands Mutual Companies

#3 Get references on the insurance company from people who have actually had claims.

#4 Ignore any references that have to do only with price.

#5 I'm really looking forward to NON renewing my Brokers License for annual Mexican fishing license.

Diana you can also insure your drivers lic only

There is a lady in Rosarito and she speaks english. juanita roman 01152-661-100-2215. Insuring your drivers lic insures you for any car you drive. NOT the car through.k. She can also help you with your regular insurance. By the way Geoff at bajabound.com is great. try him too,k:yes:

I second intenational gateway. They have been my choice for years. As David stated they are one of the best. You have to look at an insurance companies rating and how much assets they have to back up their claims. Do not expect any english to be spoken once you get past the boarder. Also
reaching the State side office for a claim can be hard too.
I have had fair and sucessful payment of a total on my car with them. But like anything in Baja the claim proceedure goes at the speed of molasses on a cold day. It can be
VERY trying and drawn out. But Their policies are recognized
and will keep you out of the cess pools that double as jails.

I'm trying to sort out this Mex ins also.
As with most everything in Mex, there
rarely is a difinative answer.
Lewis and Lewis, as posted, offers a
annual liability of $300,000 at $123
a yr. That is quite a bit of coverage.
Some of the lower quotes for
insurance have as low as $50,000 csl,
That amount in my opinion is too low.
Other popular brokers offer $100,000
coverage for $280 yr. Go figure.
One Mex Ins Co that I've read
positively about is 'Genworth'.
The question I have, is the Lewis and
Lewis Co. for $123 as responsive
as the $280 Co.? I would not buy a policy
with $50,000
