p.s. notice the trench at the bottom, dug by the soldiers. there were 3-4 of them along this 200' strip.

Tires? when closed? has an airport?

in 1986 we held monthly fly ins to san juanico for Sams clinics. That same year the DGAC decided to license all town and ranch strips and regulate their use thx to USA meddling in their business, good old DEA spooks.
The town's mayor at that time and our liason (Martha? starts with an M ), whose name i can't recall now, back then could not convince the fishing co op and town to commit to the $3000 us fee for the year, so the military ditched it. This was not TIRES for partial closings - they destroyed the RW!

We moved our operation a tad south to Las Barrancas where the 1700' useable there got a license thx to the Germans who put in the solar experimental station. Trust me - given a choice we all preferred SJ to LB.

it has not been used since and now has homes near and around, even over where it once was. many have proposed a new strip including a few USA seasonal residents with vaca homes there who also have planes, but no one has sourced a clear piece of entitled ground on which to do the improvements.
This is per many discussions with John of JUANYJUAN fame.

So - it was once "on" but has been officially "off" ever since. I have several plane owning friends from Santa Barbara Aeromedicos who run the Cadeje operation, one a dentist with a C 182 who has a home in san juanico. trust me if he could fly there he would but he like everyone else uses the Cadeje strip 10 miles away. Any one who has landed close to the town of SJ since the strip lost its entitlement has done so with STOL equip in a taildragger and used roads or a fractional length of what has been left of it after it became defunct.

Galen's book is woefully outdated since 1997 published with no revisions / updates since and he was notorious for going into closed and illegal strips for the fun of it. On more than one occasion he had to arrange a quick liftoff scrambling to get off while being chased by federales - he writes about it!

And Arnold quit his updates with rev no. 17th in mid 80s. he did nada to further BBP after that due to age and health problems. So new Jefe bought the organization and totally turned it around.

if you could read current skinny on SJ at BBP forums you'd be in a better position to expound. Most of what i say here is found there. i only WISH someone would do a legal RW there cause i'd be dirt shopping in a heart beat.

Thanks Mike, it is just that you asked like you didn't know about San Juanico having an airport... so I gave you what I knew... and that is from Arnold and Galen's books... and from BBP... and perhaps from Juan del Rio or Carlos Fiesta? One or more of them mentioned tires and another mentioned rocks being moved onto and off of the runway.

Just sharing what I have...

San Juanico has been closed for several years with remote prospects for reopening soon.

Cadajé (CDJ) is the closest private airstrip, 13 Km. north of San Juanico. N26°29©^, W112°29©^, 26/08, Elev 210', 2300 feet, fenced, soft on the ends and the middle, no tie-downs. Rwy 26 faces into the prevailing winds. Permitted through 8 Sept. 2004. Landing requires advanced permission to clear obstructions and assure attendance. This strip has been permitted and maintained for the Aeromedicos from Santa Barbara who hold a monthly free clinic.

If you are staying with us at Scorpion Bay and wish to use the Cadejé airstrip please make your request by entering all the information required on the request form here. Someone will get back to you.

On arrival, it is very important that you fill out the landing and departure manifest form completely and legibly.

San Juanico had a airstrip before you surfers took it over and renamed it Scorpion Bay, by the way!

The fly in surf tours will continue to go to Isla Navidad, Punta San Carlos or places where the runways remain open and people are friendly and don't keep the waves to themselves, I think.

Oh Wooo you got suckered in. Remember, they're never going to get it anyway. Now get back to work and do something valuable with your time. The fees for the commandante's "keep the airstrip closed fund" are going up and we need to earn some extra $$ to pay them.

By the way, everyone knows how unfriendly you (of all people) are, keeping those waves to your self like that.
