capt. mike - 8-16-2008 at 07:23 PM

can it be close to San Juanico?

palmeto99 - 8-16-2008 at 07:29 PM

Mike,

Its Scorpion Bay. You can see the bar and the break that the surfers love. I have fished off those rocks in the top right of the picture catching a skate and a large halibut the last time there.

Just in case there are non-surfers reading this:
'Scorpion Bay' is San Juanico... see http://www.juanyjuan.com and http://www.scorpionbay.net

a better view

capt. mike - 8-17-2008 at 07:39 AM

sent it to me asking if that area to the left that looks like a strip was the Cadeje strip and i told him no as i have been in at Cadeje and know where it is.
he is meeting some campers there in his plane, San juanico that is. they drive, he flies.
he needs to figure on Cadeje if it's open or drive in from Loreto where he can safely park.

so Q for Juan or others - just what is that strip on the left? did SJ finally get a strip again? i hadn't heard about one.
maybe it's just a section of road.

Bajalover - 8-17-2008 at 08:01 AM

Yeah, I'm eating my heart out........stomach churning.....saying....."well, when will you go south??
Great Photos.....Warms the heart.

just a dirt road.

Mike, the San Juanico airstrip has been 'on and off' for years... Last I read on the (once open to all) Baja Bush Pilots forum, there are tires placed across the runway when it is closed. So, yes... San Juanico has an airport per Arnold Senterfitt and Galen H... but either tires or rocks are used to close it down.

any of you pilots

woody with a view - 8-17-2008 at 09:02 AM

wanna land on this strip? good waves, bales of contraband and shadows under the cardon, aplenty.

p.s. notice the trench at the bottom, dug by the soldiers. there were 3-4 of them along this 200' strip.

sorry DK but you are wrong and/or misinformed.

capt. mike - 8-17-2008 at 09:51 AM

Tires? when closed? has an airport?

in 1986 we held monthly fly ins to san juanico for Sams clinics. That same year the DGAC decided to license all town and ranch strips and regulate their use thx to USA meddling in their business, good old DEA spooks.
The town's mayor at that time and our liason (Martha? starts with an M ), whose name i can't recall now, back then could not convince the fishing co op and town to commit to the $3000 us fee for the year, so the military ditched it. This was not TIRES for partial closings - they destroyed the RW!

We moved our operation a tad south to Las Barrancas where the 1700' useable there got a license thx to the Germans who put in the solar experimental station. Trust me - given a choice we all preferred SJ to LB.

it has not been used since and now has homes near and around, even over where it once was. many have proposed a new strip including a few USA seasonal residents with vaca homes there who also have planes, but no one has sourced a clear piece of entitled ground on which to do the improvements.
This is per many discussions with John of JUANYJUAN fame.

So - it was once "on" but has been officially "off" ever since. I have several plane owning friends from Santa Barbara Aeromedicos who run the Cadeje operation, one a dentist with a C 182 who has a home in san juanico. trust me if he could fly there he would but he like everyone else uses the Cadeje strip 10 miles away. Any one who has landed close to the town of SJ since the strip lost its entitlement has done so with STOL equip in a taildragger and used roads or a fractional length of what has been left of it after it became defunct.

Galen's book is woefully outdated since 1997 published with no revisions / updates since and he was notorious for going into closed and illegal strips for the fun of it. On more than one occasion he had to arrange a quick liftoff scrambling to get off while being chased by federales - he writes about it!

And Arnold quit his updates with rev no. 17th in mid 80s. he did nada to further BBP after that due to age and health problems. So new Jefe bought the organization and totally turned it around.

if you could read current skinny on SJ at BBP forums you'd be in a better position to expound. Most of what i say here is found there. i only WISH someone would do a legal RW there cause i'd be dirt shopping in a heart beat.

Thanks Mike, it is just that you asked like you didn't know about San Juanico having an airport... so I gave you what I knew... and that is from Arnold and Galen's books... and from BBP... and perhaps from Juan del Rio or Carlos Fiesta? One or more of them mentioned tires and another mentioned rocks being moved onto and off of the runway.

Just sharing what I have...

Edit: Here's what is on the Scorpion Bay site:
AIRSTRIPS
San Juanico has been closed for several years with remote prospects for reopening soon.

Cadajé (CDJ) is the closest private airstrip, 13 Km. north of San Juanico. N26°29©^, W112°29©^, 26/08, Elev 210', 2300 feet, fenced, soft on the ends and the middle, no tie-downs. Rwy 26 faces into the prevailing winds. Permitted through 8 Sept. 2004. Landing requires advanced permission to clear obstructions and assure attendance. This strip has been permitted and maintained for the Aeromedicos from Santa Barbara who hold a monthly free clinic.

If you are staying with us at Scorpion Bay and wish to use the Cadejé airstrip please make your request by entering all the information required on the request form here. Someone will get back to you.

On arrival, it is very important that you fill out the landing and departure manifest form completely and legibly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just saw the photo you posted, it was from Juan Y Juan's San Juanico web site... sure looks like the photo you posted Mike?:

no problemo here, am doing the same - stating what i believe to be real data.
frankly i would love to be wrong, i hope i am respective to there actually being a strip there, tire blocked or not.
perhaps John or Carlos will post.

since aviation around baja is my only area of limited expertise relevant to this forum, i am pretty fluent on what is going on. tons of resources out there really. i wasn't questioning the status quo as much as i perhaps was extending my incredulity over it respective to SJ

David K - 8-17-2008 at 10:18 AM

Yah, it would be nice if a tourist destination like Scorpion Bay had an open runway... we can only hope!

BigWooo - 8-18-2008 at 01:54 PM

Sorry guys but I disagree. With the airstrip come the commercial surf tours and even more overcrowded conditions. I used to dread seeing the tour plans circle over the bay. I for one am glad there no airport and hope there never is.

David K - 8-18-2008 at 03:28 PM

Then a sign should read "Pilots need not apply" (or surf)!

San Juanico had a airstrip before you surfers took it over and renamed it Scorpion Bay, by the way!

The fly in surf tours will continue to go to Isla Navidad, Punta San Carlos or places where the runways remain open and people are friendly and don't keep the waves to themselves, I think.

capt. mike - 8-18-2008 at 06:01 PM

good analysis DK.
it is only a matter of time before SJ gets an airstrip again.
sorry BIG WHOOP but ya can't keep parts of baja from changing.
market forces will dictate demand which will force supply's hand.
SJ is airport bound trust me. Too many fliers already going there and will build/buy homes for vaca.
then it will be like - ok, who will spring for chipping in to build and maintain a RW? and several well heeled hands (feet?) will go up and Voila'! airstrip!
2 day drive from Socal becomes 3 hour flight. Time machines. weekend trips now can work. get the surfing in and not miss work.
it happens for people who's time is valuable.

I guess we live in different worlds. I value my time as much as the next guy and certainly wouldn’t waste it in the place you describe above. Good luck with that dream vacation.

oladulce - 8-19-2008 at 02:06 AM

Oh Wooo you got suckered in. Remember, they're never going to get it anyway. Now get back to work and do something valuable with your time. The fees for the commandante's "keep the airstrip closed fund" are going up and we need to earn some extra $$ to pay them.

By the way, everyone knows how unfriendly you (of all people) are, keeping those waves to your self like that.

Summer in San Juanico

I went on a research trip to Natividad and of course took my board with me...the only time I've ever had any problems with other surfers in Baja were with the numbskulls from the surf camp there. So David, my opinion of that sort of endeavor is not as enthusiastic as yours.

capt. mike - 8-19-2008 at 06:35 AM

looks pretty crowded already. where's moondoggie?

i am just being pragmatic.

a few airplanes are not going to increase the local load one iota % wise as long as others want to drive down and camp.

everyone's time is worth the same. sometimes you can buy more of your own and stretch it.

David K - 8-19-2008 at 08:27 AM

Will a surfboard even fit in a Cessna or Piper??

capt. mike - 8-19-2008 at 10:55 AM

think Cessna C-208 grand Caravan!

with the belly pod.
about $1000 an hour. hell it's only dinero.

or piper navajo. there's a piston gas hog.

thebajarunner - 8-19-2008 at 01:22 PM

I rode a Caravan up into the highlands of Irian Jaya,
we hauled a cast iron stove and a bunch of galvanized roof sheeting along,
amazing aircraft.
too bad it is so pricey,
would make a great Baja plane,
it lands anywhere and carries huge payloads

capt. mike - 8-19-2008 at 03:29 PM

when you get that question that asks...., "if you could pick one dream plane for baja and it can be yours just choose it..."

most all of us BBPers say we'd want a Cessna Caravan. just a big old 172 with a turbine that can go anywhere land anywhere take off anywhere and haul whatever you can put into it.
wow , now where is that spare $1.6 mil i need?
