taco stands question

rogbag - 9-29-2008 at 09:16 PM

Sorry to appear dumber than normal, but when I rode south to Los Barriles in May, I went past a metropolis that had a whole row of taco stands north of town on the east side of the highway. What town was that?
I think I narrowed it down to a few of them, but can't find it on Google Earth. And before you get on my sierra too bad, just remember, you too will get old pretty soon.
I was so happy to be getting on down the road, I didn't pay enough attention to where everything was.
It might just be an excuse to go for another ride to find the elusive taco stands. And next time, I'm taking the squeeze. She loves tacos & beers.

Can you list your 'narrowed down'' choices:spingrin:

BajaNuts - 9-29-2008 at 09:25 PM

ps- welcome to the forum (my bad...)

gnukid - 9-29-2008 at 09:55 PM

Could it be San Bartolo?

Just north of Los Barriles is a little town on the edge of the road called San Bartolo with a few taco stands on the left and sidewalk/cliff on the right. They are all quite fine. San Bartolo is known for fresh and dried fruits and candies.

Also you may have visited Triunfo? Its quite small with very few taco stands?

You mention a metropolis which I can only assume means La Paz where you see many many taco stands as you leave?

Here is the church of Triunfo

Somewhere in Baja California. I think it is in Baja Norte. Sorry to admit it, but this getting old is slowing me down. It was north of a fairly good sized town, on the east side of the highway, and fairly extensive, as in a whole bunch of taco stands. Like about a mile of them. I know I wasn't hallucinating all that bad. Well, maybe a little....

woody with a view - 9-30-2008 at 05:22 AM

san quintin.

bajabound2005 - 9-30-2008 at 07:22 AM

I think it's San Quintin/Lazaro Card##as. Some are taco stands, some sell seafood.

mulegemichael - 9-30-2008 at 07:43 AM

It's San Quintin, fer sure...mostly marisco stands, methinks

oxxo - 9-30-2008 at 07:54 AM

Another vote for San Quintin.

boe4fun - 9-30-2008 at 08:09 AM

How about the strip along Mex. 1 near Maneadero?

bajabound2005 - 9-30-2008 at 08:24 AM

There are a couple of great taco stands in Maneadero, but not a whole row of them as described in the post. Going out toward La Bufadora there are LOTS of tamales stands...which reminds me - when we were traveling on the mainland and having taco cravings - there was not a taco stand to be found.

David K - 9-30-2008 at 09:36 AM

This is like looking for some mailboxes in Nevada... Narrowing it down to Baja Norte isn't a lot of help... Was it before El Rosario (that's the last Pemex on the highway for a couple hundred miles and the highway makes a sharp left turn past the station (next to Mama Espinoza's Place).

If it was BEFORE that, and after the Ensenada area, and after the curvey road section (Maneadero to Colonet)... THEN, the San Quintin/ Lazaro Card##as row of taco stands would be my bet, too!

woody with a view - 9-30-2008 at 10:10 AM

could always be san vicente. not much there but a few stands.

TMW - 10-6-2008 at 05:26 PM

It was on the other side of the big town next to the small town between the border and cabo. In other words it was any town with taco stands.

i don't think so....he said on the east side of the road. that narrows it down to 1/2!!!!

And an EXCELLENT restaurant called Valentines---just south of the Pemex.:yes:

Where ever those taco stands were, our number one rule for a taco stand is and for small restaurants is , are the locals eating there?

Sounds like you just need to head back down and find those stands again----take pictures, it helps.

That's great advice. A little recon and observation of the locals can go a long way in picking out the best place to eat with the freshest and best food. Also, take into account that Mexicans tend to eat lunch/comida a little later than we do here in the states. The busy time at most local places is usually from 1pm-3pm for lunch if its going to get busy.

Just some further advice on small restaurants -

Some of the smaller places may have a menu; but, often they may not have all the ingredients to make what is listed. To be safe or if they don't have what you wanted, you can ask, "Que hay?" (What is there?) for the scoop on whats available and in the kitchen.

In many places they will do what it takes regardless if they have the ingredients or not. It's not uncommon to order some food, see a child scurry out of the kitchen, disappear down the street, and later return with an armload of oranges for that OJ you just ordered.

Welcome to BajaNomad and may you find the ultimate taco.

reminds me of the time in san ignacio when we sat down at a restraunt that proclaimed, "seafood". we all order clam coctail. the waiter yelled something towards the back and about 5 minutes later a kid came scurrying in the front door with a sack full of clams. we all kinda smiled.....and the coctails were awesome.

tacos east side north metropolis?

while you're there, ask about the seafood escabeche. basically it is octopus, mussels, caracole, lobster, abalone in different combinations that are mixed with a a jalapeno and onion in pickling spice.

prices vary depending on contents and seasons. VERY GOOD!!!!

rogbag - 10-23-2008 at 10:06 PM

I am trying to grasp the "north side of the southbound highway" thing - but if you get me one of those two handed tacos and a jar of the seafood escabeche I would be willing to let it slide. Man does it look good! Will be a stop on the trip next May.
What is the seafood escabeche used for? Ciappino or other seafood dishes? It seems that if you buy one of those jars you would want to have a plan for its immediate use. Maybe just slap it on a cracker!

duke62 - 10-23-2008 at 11:50 PM

Okay. Rogbag. You asked a question.

From your description, me thinks it is (1) San Quintin (My guess is this is correct because of your description of the stands being in the East side. Are there a lot of trees, and agricultural land behind?.); (2) Maneadero (At the South end, Tacos Los Poblanos?); or, (3) North of Ensenada, at El Sauzal (El Trailero (sp?)) You would know it if it was Sauzal, because, it is the town, just north of Ensenada, where my wife always has to hold her nose and breathe through her handkerchief, because of the fish processing plants.

However, on the way back, she will always ask for a stop at "The Trailer," as she loves their Adobado, and seafood cocteles.

where the road curves in el rosario to the east as it more or less parallels the river "la mijita" is on the north side (get it?) whilst still on the southbound hiway.

it is cooked and stored for later use (as in canning veggies) and we only refrigerate after opening. the oil in it congeals in the fridge and looks gross but the good stuff is always good. the cracker sounds about right!

say hi to Elsa. tell her Roberto y Beatriz sent you.

Von - 10-24-2008 at 06:56 AM

Man that jar is awseome! Id love to buy some of that. Woody do they sell that stuff somewhere in Rosarito maybe in popotla? I dont have anytime to go down south right now and buy it but Rosarito maybe Ensenada is a posibility. Thanks.

woody with a view - 10-24-2008 at 10:53 AM

i don't know. i just know the old woman who collects the stuff at pta baja while the boys go fishing and jars the mariscos. her family lives in ER and owns the "la mijita". great people. your money is going straight to the old lady who lives in a dirt floor shack with holes in the plywood roof. solar panel for one dim bulb and nothing else. no refrigerator, nada. but if you ever meet her (not that you would, but if) she makes a crab cake type burrito that'll blow your doors off.

Duke62 -
I think you are correct - north of San Quintin. Agricultural land behind. I can't see them on Google Earth, so will wait until the next road trip in May to confirm. A darn shame I didn't pay attention the first two times I went by. Ah well...

greybaby - 10-24-2008 at 08:53 PM

I can smell the tacos!!! We were in Cantu a couple of weeks ago and ate like pigs at El Poblano in Maneadero. I cannot believe how fast they can make those tacos - and how good they are going down. They have it figured out. They cook outside so the aroma fills the streets and we can't resist.

I have to say, the jar thing looks vile to me but to each his own!!

Woody -
I get it. Don't know that I will remember it in the morning, but for now, maybe.
Will make sure to stop by on my way back north next May. Hope to try & coax a recipe of some sort out of her for a fish stew or some such thing.
I'm thinking a ciappino type dish. Anybody out there have a good recipe?
