we made a little bathroom shelf yesterday...
our metal shelves we installed as an "after-thought"
(comitin)
were rusting in only 10 months of use
living on the beach is "tough"
we looked "all over" for a plastic or wood shelf that would match our bamboo stuff from bali
my neighbor came over and suggested we make
a "funky-artsie" shelf...so we did
the shelf is made of extra wood and grout that was in the garage
the ceramic tiles were hand-made by my sister...
we have a ton of them and they were in the garage too
it actually came out pretty good for our first atempt in shelving
we'll get better later

I like it!
schwlind - 11-7-2008 at 07:47 AM
I love it... are those rocks embeded in the grout? The tiles are terrific too!
Barbareno - 11-7-2008 at 08:05 AM
I think it looks fantastic. I want one.
Barb
Ya did good!!!!!!!!!!
Keri - 11-7-2008 at 08:48 AM
I like it. The different tiles are great,,k
BajaGringo - 11-7-2008 at 09:28 AM
Looks great!!! Does your sister make custom tiles as a profession or a hobbie? She could easily sell those on eBay...
tripledigitken - 11-7-2008 at 09:31 AM
Very nice job!
Bob and Susan - 11-7-2008 at 01:33 PM
we actually bolted two old boards together first...

then we siliconed on the rocks ...
then we filled the spaces with the grout to make it look like the rocks are "embeded" into the grout...
we also drilled the wood to give the silicon and the grout "bite"
Bob and Susan - 11-7-2008 at 01:39 PM
our sister makes lots of ceramic stuff
but would NEVER make any money for as long
as it takes to cure and fire her stuff...
later when we get here here she's bringing a kiln to do some stuff here...
we'll have to run the generator to get that thing "powered up"

Great looking!
Wiles - 11-7-2008 at 04:54 PM
Pure Baja.........nothing better.
bajadock - 11-7-2008 at 05:23 PM
Very baja. Even considering the dearth of bathroom shelf construction projects seen on Nomad past few months, it's the best! Have you considered
marketing a complete bathroom shelf kit?
Bob and Susan - 11-7-2008 at 05:34 PM
that would mean WORK!!!
we are retired
shari - 11-7-2008 at 06:43 PM
LOVE IT! nice to see you getting creative in the baja spirit...hey...got any more of those tiles in the garbage ya want to get rid of????
Maria - 11-7-2008 at 06:54 PM
Very nice, Bob and Susan. More, more!
Maria - 11-7-2008 at 06:58 PM
shari,
I think he said they were in the "garage" not the "garbage".
Bob and Susan - 11-7-2008 at 07:31 PM

I'm going to try doing that. Except for the tiles. I'll have to buy them somewhere. But I could see those shelves all over the house, inside and
out.
Time to put the knitting aside anyways.
Thanks Bob and Susan.

Your shelf looks great.
Gracias Bob (& Susan)
DianaT - 11-8-2008 at 02:22 PM
Love it!
Gives me some ideas with some handpainted tiles we bought for tables that we decided not to have made-----
Thanks
Diane
Barbareno - 11-9-2008 at 07:10 AM
Speaking of being creative. Diane do you remember when I asked you about someone on here that painted a rock and had it in their garden? You tried
to find it for me cause I wanted to try it.
You didn't have any success. So I had to come up with something all by myself. Think I was feeling sorry for myself and wanted a cheering up. This
is what I produced.

Pretty bad...I know. Blame it on the beer.

When we built our upstairs bath we didnt want one of those pre-fab vanities so we bought a TV/VCR stand. It had a shelf/slot for a VCR machine and
doors with 2 shelves under that. The sink fit perfectly on the top and you could see it where the VCR player should have been. We felt very clever.
Until this year when the tile started falling off. Bonding the grout and tile to wood must be an art that our tile guy didnt know. Wood expands and
contracts which does seem to make grout very unhappy. Especially in a bathroom with all the moisture.
So I would advise some other adhesive. Can say what
Bob and Susan - 11-9-2008 at 02:42 PM
you really should have covered the thing with cement board first...
this is what you use in kitchens on wood cabinets BEFORE you tile.
grout should never be used for cement
you use mastic adhesive to glue the tiles
the grout is only for the spaces
then...when finished you should ALWAYS use sealer
bajajudy - 11-9-2008 at 04:15 PM
I wasnt very clear but we didnt use grout to cement the tiles just between and we did seal it. Probably the problem is from moisture on the other
side of the wood.
Forgot to say that I like your shelf!

Bob is correct - with raw wood as a sub strate you have to:
1. either paper it and add wire and a concrete mud coat 1st before tiling, or
2. use wonder board or some similar strata over the wood before you tile.
this method has to be done around any wet areas if you are tiling.
