David K would qualify as the most prominent Baja historian.
He learned from Juanita. He probably has a 3000 square foot warehouse just to house his Baja memorabilia.

For the record (and so Jose doesn't get mad at me), I didn't name any mission, a yes or a no!

However, take a look at the building in the background of Jose's photo and then the photo with me in it...

Hmmmm....

More clues!!!

BAJACAT - 12-2-2008 at 08:17 PM

Yes, it is Santo Tomas de Aquino Mission ( 1791-1849), according to history the firts site ( They where supposed to be 3 sites for this mission)..
#5 of the Dominican founded Missions in La Frontera. It was move to its present site do to flooding and insects.

David K - 12-3-2008 at 10:42 AM

There is a small debate if there were two site or three... Edward Vernon who authored the excellent book LAS MISIONES ANTIGUAS (in English) that is the best Baja mission book to date believe there were 3 sites... the middle one was destroyed by crews building the graded road to Puerto Santo Tomas. Dr. Jackson believes that site was just a new mission building, but being so close to the first site, it wasn't technically a new, seperate mission location.

All we can see today is the first site and the 'final' site be it the second or third mission location.... Both can be seen on the first pages at http://vivabaja.com/1105

David I wonder why INAH only cares for some Missions and not others, like San Vicente Ferrer(1780-1849) it gets alot of attention and funds. Some day somebody it's going to plow over some of this unsigned mission ruins.

I have no idea why that is, José... Really sad that some kind of protection or at least a sign to notify people what that pile of adobe is... INAH must have very limited funds and pick their projects based on local demand or other reasons?

They made such a big deal about how they were going to stabilize Mision Santa Maria, last year... They went in, put photos online, and did NOTHING!

However, they have done some to good work at several missions in Baja Norte... Here's what I have observed:

They have built a roof over the site of Mision Descanso, even though only the floor tiles remain... walls all gone.

Nothing much other than what locals have done at Mision San Miguel (in La Mision) for the small parts of a couple walls there.

Only a foundation at Guadalupe del Norte.

Nothing, not even a sign at the site and tiny bit of a tower at Mision Santa Catalina (in Santa Catarina).

Nothing, not even a sign at the three Santo Tomas sites.

Major wall preservation, walks, signs at San Vicente!

Just some corral walls and foundation remains at this hardest to reach mission of San Pedro Martir, 5,000' above sea level!

Major wall preservation, walks, signs at Mision Santo Domingo!

Major wall preservation, walks, signs at both El Rosario mission sites!

Some walkway, fence, sign at San Fernando... walls disappearing fast.

NOTHING at Mision Santa Maria

Huge roof over the older adobe ruins at San Borja and building restoration of the stone church at San Borja.

Building restoration of the stone church at Santa Gertrudis.
