SNOW in BAJA?

surfer jim - 12-14-2008 at 11:52 PM

Wondering if the current storm will be a snowmaker down there......eyewitness news or photos needed.....anybody?

Pompano - 12-15-2008 at 06:30 AM

surfer jim, Coyote Bay checking in:

My most recent eyewitness account of snow near our area is from the early 80's...the Tres Virgens north of Sta. Rosalia were snowcapped for a few days.

At Punta Chivato we had ice in the pans every morning for week or so. We fled to Cabo to warm up.

We did have about 2 inches of hail here on the beach in winter of 1974.

I see these events as absolute proof of a global biometeorologic tendency.

Temp right now is 55 degrees.

if current weather patter holds, then wednesday could see up to foot of snow in San Pedro Martir.

bajalou - 12-15-2008 at 08:44 AM

Nothing visible this morning from the east on El Diablo or any other part of Sierra San Pedro Matir.

David K - 12-15-2008 at 09:41 AM

The storm hit north San Diego County this morning and the local snow level is 3,500'... It is coming from the north and is a cold storm... Expect Baja to get snow if the front moves that far south... my guess is YES!

cftlet - 12-15-2008 at 10:05 AM

Here [grants pass or] we sit in 3" of snow and temp. in the mid 20 dreaming of our up coming departure for a three month trip to baja and you guys are talking about "snow in baja" how depressing :no:this type of pornographic material should not be allowed on this site:yes::yes:At least your not talking about snow on the beach so we are still coming down.

Terry28 - 12-15-2008 at 10:12 AM

Just to cheer you up...it is 22 degrees here in Big Bear with 4 inches of snow so far and snowing hard as I type...brrrrrrrrrrr

surfer jim - 12-15-2008 at 10:54 AM

I tried to put up a link to his bio page...didn't work.
Anyway, type in Ski Baja on the bottom of the membership page and you'll see what Von was referring to.

Seen it many times flocked in snow, this photo is not one of them but it shows the proximity to my house which is about 25 miles south of San Felipe.

I'm heading down this Friday and returning Christmas Eve only to head back down just after Christmas, so, I'll get some shots of the snowy mountain top.

No snow here in the Sierra, not a question of if but when!
Still it only stays a short while. Heres a pic of our ranch mid-feburary. 10cm of the white stuff, gone the next day.

Yesterday afternoon Teina and I drove out to Valle Chico to see if we could see snow on Sierra San Pedro Matir. The answer was no as the clouds were so low and with the slight rain that was falling we just couldn't see any.

But this morning with the sky clear and the sun bright, we can see lots of snow on all the mountains visible from my home.

Covered down to maybe 3000 feet or so.

BAJACAT - 12-19-2008 at 09:43 PM

Congrats Ken you are calling Laguna Hanson by it's real name, thanks, I guess Hanson it's easier than Parque Nacional Constitucion 1857.

greybaby - 12-19-2008 at 09:53 PM

We're freezing our buns off in the Boise area - it's only supposed to be 14 degrees tomorrow. Baja never looked like a better alternative. Snow all around us here and no escape in sight!!!

I haven't had the pleasure of visiting Laguna Hanson. But, it's not too hard to pronounce a mountain range by its specific name. :light:

BAJACAT - 12-21-2008 at 03:01 PM

I can belive that ither David K and you haven't been in Parque constitucion 1857, being so close to the border and if you went to SPM you have to go to PNC1857..

What???? Neither have seen Luguna Hansen??? That is one of the true GEMS of Baja. Listen to the CAT, guys and go see it ASAP-----------Fabulous!!!! as is all that high country around there. I have been, and camped there, probably more than any other place in the peninsula. I even found Native Am. artifacts there, and they are beautiful too (yes, I photographed them and left them "in situ" like a good boy). :bounce:

Nope, I have not made it a point to visit this park. I would like to, but not yet. Maybe, in '09.

BAJACAT - 12-21-2008 at 11:54 PM

remember it also has rock art,

David K - 12-22-2008 at 10:11 AM

Bajacat, I have been into the park... or close as I didn't see any park entrance signs... But, into the Sierra Juarez anyway... Just north of and again just south of Laguna Hanson a couple of different trips... pine trees and over 5,000' up.

Snow in Baja

TheColoradoDude - 12-17-2009 at 01:26 PM

Looks like the snow was about a year ago today! Early January of this year I was able to experience my first time in Baja. Toward the end of our 1200 mile road trip through Baja we camped out in the Sierra San Pedro de Mártir National Park in a brisk 17 (-8C) degree weather. The next day we went to check out the Observatory.

Any snow this year?

Can't see any from here. Just doesn't seem like it's been that cold. When it is and it rains, we get snow on the hilltops right above us.

Taco de Baja - 12-17-2009 at 01:48 PM

The SPM web cam often shows snow (including right now as I type)...

I don't think my view of the Sierra goes to that altitude.

LoyeB - 12-17-2009 at 06:31 PM

Cool photos everyone. But Id take the heat of the Sonora over the frost of Canada any day.
