(More) Brown Pelicans

gringorio - 12-18-2008 at 09:32 PM

Tonight I was just going through photos from last year and came upon this shot of a Brown Pelican taken from the seat of my sea kayak:

Here's a short bit I wrote about them:

What a great shot---just beautiful.

I never grow tired of watching the pelicans---graceful, clowns, social, and beautiful.

Awesome Shot, I've got hundreds of shots taken from the seat of my kayak also. For some reason, I never get bored shooting these clumsy looking birds.

I shoot with a camera of course...LOL

Ken Bondy - 12-18-2008 at 09:57 PM

BEAUTIFUL shot Greg. They are such magnificent birds, and you really nailed this one.

Pops - 12-18-2008 at 10:01 PM

Those look a lot different that the "pekicans" that hang aroung Fisherman's Landing in San Diego :wow: :?: :fire:

Natalie Ann - 12-18-2008 at 10:39 PM

.... his beak can hold more than his belican.;D

Beautiful pelican, Greg. Thanks.
You snowed in for Christmas this year? Dreaming of heading South with the pelicans?

If he gets any closer he won't need to dream of a white Christmas.

Crusoe - 12-19-2008 at 04:10 AM

What a wonderful shot of my most favorite bird. Thank You ++C++:D

Russ - 12-19-2008 at 05:39 AM

Wow! :o

Santiago - 12-19-2008 at 08:05 AM

I had heard that West Nile was starting to show in Baja - probably via the brown pelican. Anyone know of any human cases or confirmed bird deaths?

Thanks everyone!

well Nena, not so much as snowed-in as frozen-in ... it's 8 degrees out right now the the high today is supposed to be about 15... yuk. Last week we had a high one day of -6. Great fun!

So yeah, I'd rather take a chance of a white Christmas in Baja so am planning a solo trip for late January, the soonest I can escape ...

Pat,
Really like the second one---he looks very angry at what ever is attacking his wing.

Ken Bondy - 12-21-2008 at 11:11 AM

Sometimes they look a little goofy:

But mostly majestic:

DianaT - 12-21-2008 at 01:43 PM

This one is wondering who is following him.

Natalie Ann - 12-21-2008 at 04:44 PM

This guy nearly ran down others on the beach during his take-off:

but he was soooo graceful once in flight.

DianaT - 12-21-2008 at 05:14 PM

What did the seagull do to deserve that!

Good one, Nena

Ken Bondy - 12-21-2008 at 05:21 PM

Nena that pelican/seagull close collision is fantastic!!!!

Ken,

Awesome photos - really! I really like the last one... what's your secret? You're getting nice colors (blues, silvers) and your composition (cropping?) is always outstanding...

Nena, I love the photo of the pelican and gull - look out!

Thanks Greg, you're too kind. Those were just luck, a bunch of them congregated near the marina breakwater in Loreto. It was an overcast afternoon which probably explains the colors. Here's one that I thought a little bit about (fill flash, composition...):

The water around your island, Greg, reminds me how much I miss the Cortez. The picture tells it better than anything I could say. Those who have glided around the shoreline of the Cortez should immediately respond to it.

Hopefully it will be like that for me in a few days.

EMAM - 12-22-2008 at 07:23 AM

Even though this is Baja, and the Sea of Cortez, it says New Orleans and Mardi Gras all over it:lol:

Yep, Ken, it sure is. Here's that couple a bit later in the day.
You'll note that while most other pelicans politely turned their backs, we do have one Peeping Tomas (or Tomasina).;D

Nena

Ken Bondy - 12-22-2008 at 04:53 PM

That's great Nena!!! It's very nice that most of those males are respecting the couple's privacy!;D Maybe that Peeping Thomas (I think it is a male) is an escort. Oh no, wait, I must be thinking about whales :)

Tomas Tierra - 12-23-2008 at 12:09 PM

We came across an interesting one a while back on the way out to the Channel islands..

A dead pelican around the neck of a live one. Our best guess was that the live one dove into the water puncturing the (now) dead one's pouch driving himself right through his buddy..Weird...We rescued the live one by cutting the old on e away...

Tomas Tierra - 12-23-2008 at 01:39 PM

BTW,

Great Pics everyone!

3 days ago on a walk along the Bay.

Pompano - 12-26-2008 at 11:52 PM

This fellow was having good success in chasing small fish in the shallows below me. While I was walking by, he made 3 quick dives...got 3 fish. He eyeballed them, flew a short strafing run and splash! Pretty good fisherman.

Hmmm..Let's see..my last fishing day was a bust, wonder if this guy wants to go out?

Not as high quality as gringorio's pics but these guys sure ham it up for the camera.

Nice shot Russ... I like the foot-powered take-off technique... :smug:

I find the photos posted here by anyone look sharper/richer if you are able to host them at another photo site like photobucket, smugmug, pbase or flikr and then link back to them when you post. That way you can post higher resolution photos here rather than be limited by the 50k limit.

Nice shots all.

DianaT - 1-18-2009 at 01:35 PM

Pelicans are just so great---just love to watch them.

I like the look in this guy's eye.

Natalie Ann - 1-18-2009 at 01:57 PM

3digitKen... Wow! Not sure which I like best, the pelicans or the water. Very nicely done.

Nena

Skipjack Joe - 1-18-2009 at 04:06 PM

Wow, Ken. I bet they'd look good in black and white, too. But I like those subtle colors. Nena is right, that water is stunningly beautiful - sharp and gentle at the same time.

tripledigitken - 1-18-2009 at 04:42 PM

Nena and Igor thanks for the comments.

The water is what made the photo for me. It has a chrome quality to it that I liked. Here is one more from the bunch.

Skipjack Joe - 1-18-2009 at 05:18 PM

Great composition on this one. The first image is more arresting, though. The second one looks almost like a painting because the environment has been taken out.

It reminded me of these kind of still lifes that were popular in the 17th century.

Interesting, for those who may have been following the sick pelicans that have been observed recently:

Quote:
Did bad weather kill, sicken California Brown Pelicans?
Jan 19, 2009 11:40 AM
Bird experts suspect that California Brown Pelicans that have been mysteriously dying and turning up ill may have become sick and disoriented in a severe winter storm last month off the coast of Oregon that forced them to fly south in search of food and warmth.

Since last month, some 460 of the birds have shown up thin and confused – or dead — in Oregon and California, far from the coast where they typically feed. Domoic acid, a poison in algae that causes brain damage if ingested, was an early suspect.

But Dan Anderson, an avian ecologist at the University of California, says the birds were probably disoriented because they’d flown 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) after getting cold and wet when temperatures dipped below freezing and 60 mile-per-hour (97 kilometer-per-hour) winds slammed into East Sand Island in the Columbia River, where the Pelicans were roosting. “They just flew a thousand miles and had their tails frozen off,” Anderson tells the New York Times. “They probably weren’t feeling so well.”

David Jessup, a senior veterinarian for the California Department of Fish and Game, also believes weather was the culprit. “Quite a few have severe frostbite injuries: frozen toes and foot webs, and nasty lesions on their pouches,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “They're in pretty good body condition otherwise. Even confused and depressed pelicans were not showing signs of brain damage."

The illnesses are a concern for California, where the bird is an endangered species after nearly being wiped out by the pesticide DDT and its byproduct DDE in the 1960s. But the case isn’t closed. Low levels of domoic acid were found in blood samples of 19 sick birds, according to the L.A. Times.

"Until complete test results are available, we're not prepared to say what is to blame for the constellation of symptoms we've been seeing in these birds," Laurie Pyne, development director for the Fairfield, Calif. International Bird Rescue Research Center, told the L.A. Times. "We're still trying to put the puzzle pieces together."
