Emergency Forum?....is it time for one?

surfer jim - 2-18-2009 at 12:00 PM

I was thinking about last hurricane season.....and now with the missing persons posts it brought this to mind also.

Should there be an EMERGENCY fourm on here?

Last hurricane season we had many requests for help reguarding persons and property during/after the storms.

From time to time there is also requests for help locating missing persons.

And of course broken down vehicles needing rescue.

BAJA NOMADS has become "the" place for help on these issues.:saint:

I am thinking about a forum that is at the top of the list so everybody would see it. At times these requests get "lost" when no responses come in for a while and they move down . It would also be easier for new members seeking help to know where to post as many requests come from "first timers"

Your thoughts please.....

Sounds reasonable-- go for it.

desertcpl - 2-18-2009 at 01:02 PM

I also think it would be a good idea

chuckmccullough - 2-18-2009 at 01:03 PM

I vote yes.

BajaNomad - 2-18-2009 at 02:33 PM

I'm thinking it's a non-issue, but was waiting-out the replies - and reading the thread.

Jim notes it keeps threads towards the top, but from my experience many of the Nomads here - or just myself sometimes - will bump these threads back to the top to keep them visible.

Also (for better or worse), most "newbies" almost always target the General Discussion forum if they're concerned with visibility, because (I assume) it has the appearance of the highest use/traffic/etc. So, I am not certain there's an issue regarding which forum they should post to.

I move a lot of posts out of the General Discussion forum (and a few from others) every week into more appropriate forums (usually the Q&A forum is where they go though - someone asking a question).

I'll keep reading further input/replies.

Great idea!
What would constitute an emergency?
Flash floods or missing cat?
A part for a car or a blood donation?
I'm leaving tomorrow, do I need a passport?
Were do I find an Epipen in Baja?
Lot for sale? Stolen plane? Were to buy viagra?
Missing person? Missing dog? ATM location? Expired FM3?

VERY GOOD POINT---then Doug would have to decide what is and what is not an emergency and spend more time moving threads, and boy, that could open a can of worms.:yes::yes:

Maybe what Doug said about bumping the thread is enough---it does keep in on the first page.

I am sure an "emergency" means different things to different people.......

real ones....
missing person
disabled vehicle
fire/flood
in jail
injured

not.....
beer not cold
missing dog
lost money buying condo
ripped off at gas station

Ditto fdt.

IMO the "General Forum" does well enough for emergencies.. (hurricanes, car trouble, beer supply running low, missing people, etc.. etc..

The way it is the real emergencies sort themselves out from the non-emergencies. As Doug pointed out.. people tend to bump or reply a lot to stuff that needs extra attention.

DENNIS - 2-18-2009 at 08:37 PM

Most [me,anyway] here monitor the board by watching "Todays Posts" which gives the latest entry for all forums as they are posted. Nothing posted is lost to the observor. Everything posted, EVERYTHING, is at the top of the list. It makes so much more sense than looking around, forum to forum, for the latest news.
Emergency news is foremost in importance but it will be seen by everybody who hangs around "Todays Posts"....not just those who are looking for emergencys.
If you don't know of what I speak, look at the top of the page...Todays Posts.

What ever happened with the missing cat?

ELINVESTIG8R - 2-18-2009 at 08:54 PM

Why not leave it as is and when an emergency arises it gets bumped to the top until resolved.

toneart - 2-18-2009 at 09:01 PM

I have been laying low but I thought I would jump in here. I agree with Doug. Nomads are at their best when responding to emergencies. Many are in position to help. The emergencies also get bumped to the top often because so many Nomads are concerned.

For me, I am no longer interested in exchanging dialog with "know it alls" who actually don't. I have also been stalked and driven out. But, for information I need, I will continue to lurk and post when appropriate.

BajaGringo - 2-18-2009 at 10:03 PM

I was just thinking about you this morning while reading another post my friend. You are surely missed...

DENNIS - 2-18-2009 at 11:05 PM

Hi Tony...........Good to see you.

Sharksbaja - 2-19-2009 at 12:34 AM

OK Tony....now beat it!! Don't get us started again!! We're all getting along now so sweetly lately :saint:........:lol::lol:

Really, it's nice to see you back.

Sharksbaja - 2-19-2009 at 12:37 AM

Oops, the new forum, sorry. It would be a great place to indulge in ambulance chasing I suppose. Everyone loves a good emergency.

my two cents

madblack - 2-19-2009 at 12:58 AM

whoops my newbieness shwing , I think the forum and all in it rose to excactly the response needed, and yes I posted it there cuz it appears to have the most traffic (eyes) , I figured someone was moderating and had total faith in fellow men and women to keep an eye out and thats what happened , you probably don't need an emergency forum , thats what guns are for! ..........Thanks again all

Umm..m\hmmm...I am a "today's Post" type person and know that things can get lost so i vote an emergency forum to always be at the top...I like the SSB radio nets that always start with any emergencies...then get to the other stuff...although I can see that there may be an issue with perceived emergencies vs real ones however perhaps the moderator can judge those.

Hmmm.... any thoughts towards this subject that would create less work and/or responsibility in administering the board instead?

I'm just sayin'....

elgatoloco - 2-19-2009 at 12:47 PM

When there is an emergency post it in General Discussion and those who check in daily will be charged with bumping to the top until resolved. :saint:

Darn, I was going to go out and get a life ;D

Paulina - 2-19-2009 at 02:20 PM

I was thinking along the same lines as shari; moderator filtering and an Emergency a sticky at the top.

EGL and FDT, if I'm in an Emergency and can't check in with Nomads on a daily basis, then I'm trusting that the two of you will bump me, and then come to my rescue. ;) I'll sleep easier in my jail cell somewhere knowing you guys are keeping me on top until help arrives. :saint:

You have my number, call me 24/7/365. I got you covered! We keep a few pesos around for bail money. :dudette:

Let me be the first to nominate shari as full time moderator of the all new EMERGENCY Forum! :saint::yes: Who will second that emotion?

Doug, no need to thank me publicly. ;)

Who will be in charge of making sure the emergency moderator and bumpers are properly hydrated with adult beverages?

fdt - 2-19-2009 at 06:34 PM

elgatoloco is, he's got the pesos :light:

Paulina - 2-19-2009 at 07:09 PM

Sorry bub, those emergency-pesos are already reserved...for ME.

bajabound2005 - 2-19-2009 at 07:18 PM

When people post "emergency" stuff, it's important that they put the general locale in the subject line!

Ford - 2-21-2009 at 03:55 PM

I often wondered why people post
BUMP.....:bounce::bounce::bounce:
now I know!
:bounce::bounce::bounce:

CaboRon - 2-21-2009 at 05:03 PM

Then there is of course, the mini-bump .....

..

And the Head Bump ....

.....careful.
That could be a few........... and for awhile. Figure out when something should be pulled, if it's not resolved.
Guidelines can be good here.
