poll: tattoos and body modifications

BajaNuts - 3-1-2009 at 03:05 PM

How many Nomads have a tattoo, body piercing (other than standard ear piercing), brand, or other body modification?

[Edited on 3-3-2009 by BajaNuts]

Bajahowodd - 3-1-2009 at 03:09 PM

Too early to draw conclusions, but my experience has been that folks who get a tat, usually get more. ditto the piercings.

Historically body markings have a place. On my body NO!
I did at the young age of 13 let my best friend’s sister insist I put a cross in the web of my hand. Even then it made no sense. I let her put my initials on the calf of my leg. Today I see this distorted blotch essentially unnoticed .
I am a Marine and when given first liberty to San Clemente, the troops stormed to San Clemente for the usual USMC or a Bulldog. Then if you really want to make a statement a nice shiny bolt in your tongue is a classic, but ya wanna really make that "statement", nothing like a slithering lizard, blowing fire out your butt, with a nice bolt in each cheek.
My favorite is the ring in your tongue, or a 10 carat diamond that really puts you above the crowd

Bajagypsy - 3-1-2009 at 07:02 PM

Like a mentioned on the other thread, I have several tat's and a piecering. I have placed them on my body so that either I can show them if I wish (and not go to jail) or I can cover them, and not have to wear a snowsuit to do so.

nancyinpdx - 3-1-2009 at 08:57 PM

I think well done tats on some brownish men can look sexy sometimes. Depends on the guy, where they're placed, what the tat is, etc. I had a Mexican boyfriend with an ultra sexy chest (yummy!) and he looked ok with his but tats don't look good on just anyone.

I don't like them on the neck, face, head, hands, etc. Or when there are way too many or if they are demonic looking. I do think it may be wiser to get ones that are usually covered by clothing. I also prefer my men to be non-pierced. I can stomach a pierced ear where its just a tiny hole, but others piercings on a guy turn me off (as a potential mate).

24baja - 3-1-2009 at 09:08 PM

I have pierced ears 1 hole each side, and voted as such, I guess that should be considered body piercing. But I was cursed....I got them without parents permission and have an allergy to metals, even gold in my earlobes bother me so I rarely get to enjoy earrings.....don't tell Mom but I shoulda listened!Connie

fixtrauma - 3-1-2009 at 11:51 PM

None...........and live in Oregon.

Bajahowodd - 3-2-2009 at 12:26 AM

Self mutilation.

nancyinpdx - 3-2-2009 at 02:21 AM

i have pierced ears, and used to have some other piercings a long time ago but don't use them anymore- not even earrings. I,too, have metal allergies. The only metal that never bothers me is 24k gold.

bajamedic - 3-2-2009 at 02:28 AM

My tattoo

Wow, I LOVE that crab tony...Juan is a tatoo artist...i had NEVER even thought of getting a tattoo...i HATE pain...well...never say never. I have a nice whales tail below my belly button, a little star on my ankle and another nice vine where I cant' see it! But I would never have gotten them from a public tattoo place...and certainly dont feel mutilated.

ckiefer - 3-2-2009 at 07:54 AM

My son got his first tat this past Christmas. On his calf. I knew the day would come, so I just sucked it up. It's a tree, but not just any ordinary tree. Looks like a dead tree to me. I told him that next year for Christmas he could use some markers and draw some lights and tinsel on it for decorations.

Simone Shari, Genie who did my tattoo, is a public tattoo shop, but she been doing body art for 20 years, former ER nurse, and a fellow USAF veteran. Todo confianza.

Your right in that California, tattoo shops are not regulated....do your research....be careful. Get one for yourself, not to make a public statement.

Shari, a tattoo below your belly button....that's one of the most painful place to get one. I think your being modest.

yes, It DID hurt and was a long process...but it was kind of a turning point for me and needles. I am the biggest chicken but have learned to just buck up now...laugh in the face of pain...it was a very interesting experience...but the one on my derriere hurt more! and it always gets a rise out of the nurse here(who is male) when i have to get a shot on my butt....is this too much information???

A nice tramp stamp on some babe looks okay but it will look crappy when she's an old lady. So many people have them now that they don't represent anything like "I'm a badass". The worst is the NBA players who tat up everything.
I think they are ugly for the most part.
I told my college kid " If you get a tattoo, no more money from me"

Some of the most beautiful and intricate skin art is found on the Yakuza and their Geishas. I wish I could remember the name of a Japanese movie I saw once which was one step shy of porn but nevertheless quite erotic. In it a Geisha was getting a full back tat portrait of a famous historical lady while, um, straddling the artist's son. I suppose it was a great way to distract from the pain while providing inspiration to the artist.:tumble:

Have a couple, but here is my story teller......

Years ago, me and a buddy were drift fishing off LB and a dorado hit my friend's baitfish hard, jumped, spit the hook and it ended up in my friend's eye, literally. A few shots of tequila, an emergency plane ride home and a great eye doc helped save his eye.

Hence, the Dorado with an eye patch and a tequila bottle under his fin.....

Six tatoos, they run the whole gamut. A small cross put on in Jerasulem at age 10 (my mother's idea), an eagle (jarhead tatoo), a grateful dead skull with roses (deadhead tatoo), 2 celtic knots (heritage tatoos), and a skeletal lizard (deadhead with a passing interest in aboriginal X-ray art tatoo).

That kind of opinion is getting dated. You forgot to add long hair, and bell bottom pants. :P

Depending on the job, I would hope the interviewer (HR) learned something in college, other than to judge on appearance.

Mango - 3-7-2009 at 10:08 PM

My grandfather had a bunch of greenish looking blotches all over his arms.

I guess its cool if thats your "thing".. Not for me.

I'm still waiting to see a giant lip plate on my local Starbucks worker. Can I get a muffin on that?

BajaNuts - 3-7-2009 at 10:21 PM

Mango,
There's a world of differences from the greenish blotches your grandfather got at who-knows-where some......how many????.........years ago and the tattoos of today. Time and technology has improved inking 50-fold from when Gramps may have gotten his.

I would bet money that if Pops had a tat from the last 20 years, it would still look great. I'll try to take pics and post mine. It's almost 20 years old and I think it looks as good now as it did then. The artist who did it has it on her portfolio page.
More tomorrow.........

Mango - 3-7-2009 at 11:04 PM

I really don't have a problem with tattoos and piercings. I do know that the inks have improved vastly; but, I was rather turned off by my grandfathers tattoos. He was a tough SOB and a good man; but, I just never admired his tattoos.

Of all the tattoos I've seen, and I've seen quite a few, I really only liked or enjoyed about two of them from the spectators perspective. I don't find it to be an issue in the workplace or society if it is modest and can be covered. Prison tattoos, ones on the neck, hands, and face I find boorish.

I understand the permanence factor and desire for it that leads many to get tattoos. In addition, I also respect tribal or cultural tattoos, such as those done in Samoa, etc..

Personally, I think most tattoos are vain. Each person is different and I respect that. I'm an artist. I like to make my own art and put it on the wall. I know others can see this as vain. Thats fine, it is important to me. I make art for myself, if others enjoy it thats great. The nice thing is I can change it at a whim and I can move on, evolve, and change my tastes if I feel like it.

What one finds as vain, may have deep meaning to someone else. This in, and of itself, renders my perspective irrelevant and I understand that. I don't belittle or think less of someone because they may or may not have a tattoo. I just choose to exist without tattoos and find this permanence even more meaningful.

I really hope people enjoy their tattoos, I really do. I just figured I'd add the perspective of the un-tattooed. I respect you and, heck.. I might even enjoy the artwork; but, I'm pretty certain I'd enjoy the story about the artwork more.

Cheers

GeoRock - 3-10-2009 at 11:12 AM

The ink used in tatoos puts toxic heavy metals into the body, especially mercury. Too many tatoos, and when you are older you won't remember why you have them. (Brain fog from heavy metal build-up in the body.)

Okay, so I will likely be roasted for that comment. Oh well.

I find that I can express myself through being an interesting character, and thus have no need to have my already sexy body advertise the fact that I am unique. LOL

BajaNuts - 3-10-2009 at 06:06 PM

Inks USED to contain mercury........along with antivenins, immunizations, large game fish (such as....TUNA), cavity fillings...

I've contacted a source in the business, and will post their reply.

Following GeoRock and other's thoughts about a body not needing additional adornment,

how many of you who have expressed dislike for tattoos and other body adornment wear jewelry? Whether male or female, isn't jewelry a body adornment designed to make the person look better and more desirable?

A wedding ring is maybe the ONE piece of jewelry I would not classify as adornment.

Do you wear a watch? How FANCY is it? Does it have DIAMONDS? Anything other than a Timex for the usual everyday person or an "Ironman/sports watch" for an athletic person (who really can use the stopwatch feature) ...isn't anything else (vanity) jewelry...aka... body adornment?

[Edited on 3-11-2009 by BajaNuts]

BajaNuts - 3-10-2009 at 06:17 PM

Still typing with "bunglefingers" and usually erase the best posts!

I also wanted to ask GeoRock if brain fog from heavy metals is any worse than brain fog from agave, potato or grapes, from large game fish, job-site hazards, doctor-administered medications, or from plant-based campfires?

It's all good, Geo...

GeoRock - 3-11-2009 at 03:51 PM

I believe that is the same type of brain fog, BajaNuts.
Glad to hear the ink no longer contains mercury.

I didn't actually say nor indicate I don't like tatoos or piercings. My comment was only my personal choice concerning them, pertaining only to my own body.

If someone else adorns their body with various items, that is their choice and is certainly nothing new to the world.

Barry A. - 3-11-2009 at 04:23 PM

------tatoos are weird, and they represent "one strike" (at least) against somebody being hired for a job.

------and no, I wear no jewelry except sometimes a wedding ring. My watch is a $14 Timex. (but I do have a nice ornate silver buckle that I got from my Dad)

I don't even like makeup on my wife, and she wears practically none (she does not need any).

Natural is good. -----but to each his/her own.

um...about the poll...i have 3 tattoos now and i love every single on of them, i think it's important to have tat's that mean something to you, not just get them because they look nice because it's something you are going to have for the rest of your life most of the times, i have a sun with a moon in the middle on my shoulder blade, for me it means that usually even though darkness is always present the light is always stronger...i have a small star on my stomach and that is because i think that anyone can reach the stars if they believe and try hard enough and the last one i got looks like a symetrical tattoo but it's not, and it has a heart in the middle, the point of that for me is that even though love looks like it's the same on both sides it almost never is...so thats my tattoo history!!!

Since I started the poll and thread, I'd like to post another....

I am surprised at the results of the poll. It is showing a majority of Nomads with no tats/mods at all! I was not suspecting that result at all! From the general "anti-establishmentarianism..."(is that even a word?????) attitude, I was expecting a lot more out-there "against-the-authority" attitudes of youth being evident.

VERY INTERESTING...............

thanks for everyone's sharing. This thread may not be dead, may come back with some new fun...or new pics....

Thanks again to everyone who posted or polled.....
