Cool!

Bajagypsy - 3-6-2009 at 09:49 AM

goodness, he looks in better shap then the seagull that was there the one time we visited you!

I always wonder when we drive up what new and interesting animals you will have.

Lauriboats - 3-6-2009 at 10:03 AM

Hope he gets well soon, beautiful bird.

Pescador - 3-6-2009 at 10:22 AM

Feed him lots of sushi. No that has rice, make it sashimi.

jahImpala3 - 3-6-2009 at 10:37 AM

Looks like a Royal Tern to me according to my bird book. Very neat!

shari - 3-6-2009 at 10:44 AM

I just fed him some bonita and he ate 3 peices which is a good sign...he has the most delicate little black feet that seem too tiny for his body...he is a very regal fellow.

Osprey - 3-6-2009 at 11:33 AM

Por favor, Nomads with big bird books: I can't tell the difference between a Royal tern and an Elegant tern. Anybody?

shari - 3-6-2009 at 11:54 AM

elegent terns have a longer black crest...this guys is shorter
also have more slender beaks...this guy's beach is a doozie
and less orange than the royal tern's who's is quite orange....foresters and caspian terns have a black tip on the beak.

El Camote - 3-6-2009 at 12:55 PM

Birds like music. To aid in his recovery, maybe you should play "Tern! Tern! Tern!" by the Byrds.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUworKXBzdE

Hopefully he won't take a tern for the worse.

Sorry.

shari - 3-6-2009 at 01:49 PM

ah Camote....you are a wise owl....Queenie...our royal guest was very soothed by this tune which was very good timing as she was a bit miffed by this rascally kitty.

Russ - 3-6-2009 at 02:09 PM

Shari, Here's a pic Doug shot a couple days ago on our trip.

Doug Terns.jpg - 48kB

Desertsurfergal - 3-6-2009 at 06:15 PM

Oh Sheri, please take good care of him. All birds deserve all the love!!!

shari - 3-6-2009 at 06:22 PM

Queenie is thouroughly enjoying her stay with us....she could barely stand this morning and has been dining on sashimi (without the wasabi) whenever she snaps her beak...she held court with all our visitors who came to visit her throughout the day...took a stroll around the castle....came back to where I was seated...looked at me...held her head back and opened her beak....more sashimi please dahling...
Looks like she may recover to visit other kingdoms....or is it queendoms?

It may be that she is but a princess as she is quite small, and short too with such tiny feet...a delicate "thumb" and the coolest yellow toenail on her middle toe.

Shari, great photos. Hope the recovery is successful!

Hey, that bird is sitting in my chair! NO?

Hahaha

Sharksbaja - 3-7-2009 at 12:24 AM

My my even the birds find you the hostess with the most-ess!:tumble:

That's awesome! Sharis' Sanctuary!

shari - 3-7-2009 at 08:17 AM

Queenie had a restful night after holding court with a few more Nomads who arrived for the festivities sunday....everyone wants to feed her...she is certainly the center of attention. It's neat to watch people around wild animals...their fasincation with seeing something so lovely, so exotic up close and in our living room!
She seems a bit stronger today but still falls over if she moves too fast when she tries to avoid the cat. Her beak is much softer than I imagined...it is very light like a weak finger nail...sound like plastic when she snaps it open and shut begging for food.....I think she might be young, the way she puts her head back when she wants lunch.

Royal Turn

bonanza bucko - 3-7-2009 at 08:40 AM

I have a good friend who is a famous birder....author and one of those guys who sign on to National Geographic ships and expeditions as a nature lecturer. He says you have a Royal Turn....it is bigger and heavier than an Elegant Turn...with an orange bill.

He says the reason the bird is weak is probably parasites in its gut....might check that with a vet.

He also says that your living room is gonna smell like a bird colony pretty fast because these beautiful little guys poop all the time!

I assume you have watched Turns fish....it is a lesson in flight that no human can learn...they are absolutely beautiful and quick....When they are in flight I think the vision of them belongs in an art museum.

shari - 3-7-2009 at 09:24 AM

thank you bucko...yes, I thought Queenie was a royal tern....and I figured the parasite thing was the problem too as she was weak...ask your buddy what I might give her for parasites....no vet here....and if she might survive? maybe i can email him?? also would like to know if she is a young lady?
yes, she is a constant pooper all right...I can barely keep up but we like it that she can move about freely and not be in a box. Incidently...when she first arrived...her doo doo was black and after rest and eating, it is now the normal white with a little black turlette in the middle...good sign??

[Edited on 3-7-2009 by shari]

jorgie - 3-7-2009 at 10:08 AM

Shari, put a drop of Oil of Oregino in her.....one drop should do but a follow up six hours later would be OK

shari - 3-7-2009 at 10:11 AM

very funny Jorgie...oil of oregano? where might I get that...or maybe i could make some up...soak oregano in olive oil???

BajaGringo - 3-7-2009 at 10:35 AM

I have attempted saving several birds in my lifetime with varying degrees of success. I suspected parasites a few times and a vet gave me something which helped but I also recall him saying that very same medication could be lethal to other species of birds. A professional opinion would be good on this one.

I do remember that when I would first get the birds and they were weak it would help to break down their meals with a food processor as it made it easier for them to eat and digest the food.

Thanks Shari for being such a kind soul...

Iflyfish - 3-7-2009 at 01:45 PM

Ok, I couldn't help myself.

One good tern deserves.......

Hope it gets back to it's buddies soon.

This will not doubt be the begining of something big!

As to the color, texture, smell of the poop.....too much information.

Iflyfish

Skip_Mac - 3-7-2009 at 11:43 PM

Shari, Congrads...You are trying a difficult task. Vets often hate to do wild birds because they get so many respiratory and other infections. Without a specific diagnosis, good feeding, low stress and rest may allow tour Turn's immune system fight off any problem. It's always hit and miss (I've been through two Oil Spills with cleaning and rehab.. 45% recovery is a miracle).. So carry on, do your best and maybe our wild friend will be back diving for fish soon.

Oh, Soba are definitely on the list for next visit...lots of them. I love them with a little butter and soy sauce in the morning.
Cheers

Bajahowodd - 3-8-2009 at 12:38 AM

Cute as a button. Consider yourself blessed that you could have time with this lovely creature. But sometimes, mother nature has her own agenda. Hope you can get this little guy back to nature, but if it does not happen, just realize that you had that wonderful quality time with this beautiful creature.

shari - 3-8-2009 at 08:09 AM

Day 3 with this incredible bird who has touched the hearts of a couple dozen people so far who have met her....we have tried to save many birds with not alot of luck but it's worth a try anyway and is interesting to observe them up close-

Yesterday was a lively day for queenie...she got fed by lots of her courtiers and walked around the house like she owned the joint. She ate lots yesterday and even talked a bit...she took a turn out on the patio but fell over again.
But this morning....I went to feed her her first bonita sashimi piece and man she took my whole forefinger into her beak (that yesterday was weak and only gently touched my fingers)...well she had a firm grip on my finger and I couldnt get it out of her clamped down beak!!!! I had to pry it open with my other hand!!!!! OK...change in feeding strategy now...chopsticks! gonna try dipping the fish in oregano oil today.

Shari you make me laugh, I love the fact that you have another bird, I think she will make a wonderful addition to your house!

Royal Tern

bonanza bucko - 3-8-2009 at 08:26 AM

Shari:
I sent my buddy Brad an email....if he gets it...is at home....he'll get back to you on your email. He's a REAL Birder...one of the best on earth.

ELINVESTIG8R - 3-8-2009 at 08:34 AM

My best wishes for Her Royal Highness' speedy recovery! Thank you Shari for being you!

windgrrl - 3-8-2009 at 11:53 AM

Good stuff, Shari. One good tern deserves another. I'll be rooting for the little guy.

shari - 3-8-2009 at 12:05 PM

Just off the phonw with my favorite saint...vet Lorraina in Mulege who happens to specialize in bird medecine and we now know that Queenie is actually a princess who is not quite weaned yet...thus the begging with her beak up. When we were having breakfast this morning, she waddled over to the table beside me and opened her beak!!! what a riot!!

the black doo doo was do to eating something rotton or bad and means blood in the upper urinary tract..but she's over that now.

When I told her about her falling over and lying there with her wings spread, she explained that this could be a defense mechanism...which makes perfect sence as she does it when the cat comes snooping around.
I am learning so much...this little princess just may imprint on us here and stick around...hope she gets stronger soon and is off with her birdy buds.
But in the meantime she seems quite happy to be here and is getting stronger by the moment..she is much more alert and comical now...quite a character!

shari

desertcpl - 3-8-2009 at 04:38 PM

been following this tread now,,, what a wonderful experence this must be for all of you guys,,hope the little girl makes it, sounds like she is getting alot of love.

and Shari are you over your sickness now

Mexitron - 3-8-2009 at 08:23 PM

Way to go Shari--that's one lucky bird!

BirdDog - 3-9-2009 at 09:28 AM

Wow way cool Shari. If the bird imprints on you you'll have to get a ultra-lite plane to fly around with it.

shari - 3-9-2009 at 11:38 AM

great idea Bdog! Queenie is doing great and eating voraciously...juan's gonna have to go fishing cause we're plumb out of fish now.
I have pretty much recovered from the nasty flu...danced it out last night...but that will be for a different thread.

Tell us when Queenie flies away

bonanza bucko - 3-9-2009 at 07:16 PM

Shari:

I certainly hope Queenie flies away pretty soon to become a Tern again and not a cat avoider. Please tell us when that happens. We'd also love some more pictures of her now that she's in good shape.

shari - 3-9-2009 at 08:23 PM

Today day 5 was a real big day for Princess Queenie....she began preening in earnest...

had a big bath for like half an hour....scoured each feather...really cool thing to observe how meticulous and orderly it was carried out.

she would preen, clean, smooth out then fluff up

then she would stretch out her wings

and here she is all cleaned up and ready to fly.

She also cruised around alot....to the dining room, kitchen, and then started flying...oh oh...

I voted to let her go today but it was very windy this afternoon and would be hard to fly...Juan ordered me to keep her 2 more days to have a better chance at survival( but she might sneak out to the patio tomorrow!!) if I leave the door open....
well bird fans... I need to get some sleep after the big party on sunday...need a couple days to recover enough to post the report...it's a doozie! just glad there were no arrests or trips to emergency.

Bajagypsy - 3-10-2009 at 07:32 AM

No trips to emergency, it wasn't a real party then  That's only because I wasn't there!

So glad that queenie is doing better, and getting ready to go and meet her king!

shari - 3-10-2009 at 08:07 AM

Well...this morning Princess Queenie is getting downright aggressive...when I went over to her towel nest to feed her...she jumped over to me and grabbed the whole bonita bag!!! instead of waiting for me to feed her with chopsticks...took me by surprise....she is getting strong fast...the cats better watch out!

BirdDog - 3-10-2009 at 08:56 AM

Fly little one fly.

Phil S - 3-10-2009 at 09:09 AM

"the cats had better watch out"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shari. That comment caught me off guard on this thread, and got a good chuckle out of me. God bless ya for your love of Gods creatures!!!!!! BUT!!!! Aren't you afraid of your cats 'desire' for bird food???????

[Edited on 3-10-2009 by Phil S]

shari - 3-10-2009 at 10:29 AM

nah...our cats are well trained by our free range chickens to stay away from beaks...our chickens scare the sweet bejesus out of cats and dogs alike! Queenie has been flying around the house today...she is standing beside me at the moment begging for food but the fish ran out and we are waiting for Juan to get home with a fresh meal...be cool queenie.

shari - 3-10-2009 at 11:24 AM

well, Queenie is getting pretty rambuncious this morning...whenever she waddled over to me, I gave her food but the fish ran out and we are awaiting Juan's arrival with more....but in the meantime she is getting agressive...she tried to eat Nancy's shoe and is looking at me pretty menacingly at the moment...didnt want balony or smoked yellowtail either....uh oh...hurry home Juan!

Geez I love bologne...if it's good enough for...well anyway I think you've created a Princess snob. I am very impressed with your caring towards Ms. Princess. I do hope she get's healthy soon for the sake of your fingers and shoes.

The other day as we were walking along the beach my 5 year old son and I saw a bird with a hurt wing. It was a rather large bird...I think a seagull. My son really really really wanted to take it home and get it some help. I didn't know what to do...any suggestions? Is there an outfit here in Todos Santos that handles this type of thing?

I told my son a white lie...I said I would call the folks that help birds and they will help this wounded bird. Two days later my son asked if those people came and helped the bird as it wasn't in that spot anymore...I replied yes. It was sad to see a bird that otherwise seemed very healthy except for one broken wing.

Beachgirl - 3-10-2009 at 12:27 PM

Shari...your stories and photos are simply amazing! Sounds like she is ready to hit the dusty trail...maybe she will come back some day to build a nest

shari - 3-10-2009 at 12:36 PM

well this may well be the last chapter of the Princess Queenie episode. She started flying around in the house and rousted the cat from her sleeping spot

then she took a tern on the piano

after flying into a couple windows, I decided to take her outside..she turned her head when she heard her sister call

and just suddenly lifted up and flew away out to the rock in front. She reunited with her sister and told her about all the strange humans in that house on the rock but great free lunch.

We had a wonderful few days together and I learned alot about birds and learned to love little queenie..juan will be sad when he gets home. I'm so glad we were able to help her.

Bajagypsy - 3-10-2009 at 01:00 PM

I'm glad that queenie got to join her family, don't worry Juan will bring you another animal soon, and if he doesn't I'll be down soon, and will find all sorts of animals for you :dudette:

oladulce - 3-10-2009 at 04:38 PM

Now that was a great story, and photos Shari!

fishbuck - 3-10-2009 at 04:46 PM

Ya Shari, when Queenie spreads the word you might have a house full of birds seeking free lunch.
I mean, this could really take a "tern" for the worse!

shari - 3-10-2009 at 08:15 PM

YOu know me...more the merrier! We wonder if she will remember her days here and muse at the possibility of her showing up here for lunch someday.

Most of your guests do seem to make the migration "home" eventually.
Seems to "tern" out okay!

Alright that is my last "tern" joke. Queenie might get angry.

Buck-it wasn't your tern to go!

Skip_Mac - 3-10-2009 at 09:06 PM

Congratulations Shari and Juan, you pulled off a great rescue. Your friend is now back where she belongs.. otherwise how could she grow up, raise some chicks and teach them to come to your place for a free meal. Scientists are documenting that birds have a lot of memory where it comes to remembering food sources. You may have made a long term friend.
