what do you wish you could get down here?

ArroyoTaxi - 4-1-2009 at 08:16 PM

I've been here for 4 months. Love it here but I wish I could buy: fresh herbs (dill, mint, rosemary, basil) Stoned Wheat Thins, California Chardonnay, razor-thin wild smoked salmon, fragrance-free toilet paper, organic peanut butter, steel cut oatmeal. *sigh* BUT: I get: fresh tortillas, fish tacos, cheap tequila. good trade-off. What do you wish you could buy at you local cantina?

Diver - 4-1-2009 at 08:19 PM

Sounds like all you miss about Baja is Trader Joes !

I'm down to my last 1/4 cup. I'm being verrrry careful about how I pour it onto my fresh hot tortillas. Yeah, I miss Trader Joe's a little bit, but not enough to leave this wonderland. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I just have a hankering for some stuff. Just like when I'm back home, I miss fish tacos, Damiana, fresh limes, mangoes.... Maybe I'm just a malcontent.....

Arroyo, your list resembles ours in many respects. But we live over on the mainland, so some of these items aren't simply a dream.

What we have found:

Cottonelle--fragrance-free TP that holds up in the, uh, trenches

Ca. style Chards-I assume you mean fruity and oaky and hot. Try some of them from Chile. Some are similar, although the whole world is now trending AWAY from the CA style of the 90s.

herbs-forget the supermarkets. Our majors carry them but they are in such poor shape. We have farmer's markets where they bring this stuff in from the fields. But the best soln on the herbs is growing them. We have rosemary and basil and mint on the property. We ask other gringos on the local message boards for other stuff.

What we havent found (not even at Costcos in Mex):

unsweetened peanut butter-I got so desperate I tried a Skippy product called Natural Super Chunk. Still some added sugar but works in a pinch. VERY CHUNKY. Found it at a Mega store. Just got back with two jars of Kirkland PB.

Wild smoked salmon-we've found farmed, smoked salmon in smaller-than-Costco quantities also at a Mega. It'll hafta do for bagels. Costco quantity on smoked salmon is too much for the two of us.

What we continue to desperately seek:

Claussen pickles

Costco-style bagels (decent frozen alternative from NY City Bagel Co. at the Megas)

pepperocinis-not anywhere.............looked everywhere!

Stoned wheat thins-even the TJs substitute is a far cry from Red Oval Farms. Just brought down three boxes. GOES WITH THE ORGANIC PEANUT BUTTER, RIGHT?????!!!!!!!!

decent lunch meat (especially corned beef and turkey)-everything is so processed down here, all comes from a processed roll. 200 varieties of ham, WTF!!! We arent big on ham.

decent whole wheat bread-I'm talking something like Orowheat Health Nut or Wheat Berry bread.

decent rye bread-rye is at some bakeries but NO CARAWAY SEEDS! Well, it just ain't rye in our book w/o caraway seeds.

Biggest finds:

Trivento wines. Many red and white varietals. Almost all under 7.00US. All good, not great, but good. Trying a Torrontes tonight. All from Argentina and Chile.

Local produce-We are astounded at how they are growing incredible swiss chard, italian zuchs and English style cucumbers over here. Two farmer's markets per week in the Guaymas area. Or, just ask the local guy with the produce in the roadside truck. He will have it for you next time.

rice paper-Three Ladies Brand. couldn't believe it when we found it in a little grocery store. But we have the makings for Vietnamese style spring rolls. IN general, however, our area could use a well-stocked asian market. I hear it from every gringo down here.

Pompano - 4-2-2009 at 01:14 PM

Sharks and Cypress...

Try nice big frog legs from the lake at San Ignacio. We gigged there a long time ago while living at Pta. Chivato.

Now as to those yummy Dungeness, well ....we like RVing on the Olympic Peninsula and camping near Dungeness Pt. It's like Baja, only greener and cleaner.

What else do we wish for?...hey....how about LAVENDER! hint..hint

When in Mexico do as the Mexicans do (Novel Concept.)
Fresh herbs** I raise all mine in a little planter. Seeds are readily available at places like Johnny's Seeds.

Stoned wheat thins** here they are called Saladitas and are made by Gamesa. Very tasty and you don't even have to hold out your little pinkie when you eat them. If you don't know how to get your wheat thins stoned, just ask around, someone will help.

California Chardonay**Mexico makes some award winning wines that come from the guadalupe valley. The locals really like Franzia or Almaden out of the box. Failing that Ripple has a big following and it is pretty good with 7-up.

Razor thin smoked Salmon**This is yellowtail country and it is actually much better than salmon. If you want it smoked, there are numerous places around LB that does that and then do not let them overdo it and keep it more on the raw side. Much better than salmon.

Fragrance-Free Toilet Paper**I have never seen fragrance toilet paper in Baja, but most of the places use old magazines and newspapers. Very durable.

Organic Peanut Butter**You can buy lots of peanuts, locally called cacahuates, and put them in the blender with some vegetable oil. Tastes like sh.., but it is probably organic (or something)

Steel Cut Oatmeal**Now I have heard of some real yuppie things but this one gets me. Why would you want to use steel to cut the top off of a Quaker Oats Instant Oatmeal package? Be sure to try the strawberry and Maple syrup packages, they are especially cloying.

I think I should get a job with the local chamber of commerce as the new program director for making people feel at home in a foreign country. ;);)

Help! Anybody! Please, oh please...bring one of these from Sammy's

Pompano - 4-4-2009 at 11:06 AM

This is hands down the best pizza in the entire world. Only use fresh ingredients and dough is made fresh every day. Thin crust only..the way real pizza has to be. I am now salivating quite heavily. Not a pretty sight. Can someone help?

On this particular pizza I had them slice it into wedges, but the traditional style is 3-4 inch squares. You will use about a case of napkins per pie...cuz it's sooo nice and greasy!
.
*Anecdote about pizza slices at Sammy's:

A guy sat down next to our table at Sammy's.

The waitress came. The fellow ordered a large Sammy's special..the 20" Pepperoni Greaser.

Waitress, "Yes, sir..and how would you like that sliced? In 8 pieces or 16?"

He answered, "You better make it 8, I could never eat 16."

I can't find Molinari Salami from San Francisco.........

I love the small fuzzy ones. And some decent proscuitto, as long as we're writing down our wish list.

But it isn't like we're left wanting, now that we have the wonderful folks at Dali in Loreto!!

On this particular pizza I had them slice it into wedges, but the traditional style is 3-4 inch squares. You will use about a case of napkins per pie...cuz it's sooo nice and greasy!

how COULD you??? it looks so homemade! where is sammy's?

Pompano - 4-5-2009 at 07:08 PM

dianaji,

You like Pizza? I don't dare say the name S-A-M-M-Y'-S out loud....my lab starts drooling.

You are so right, they do make it homemade every night. From scratch with all fresh, organic ingredients. I think they may even have some free-range chickens out back. The location might be a touch tricky, although it really is very convenient...geographically speaking, it's the center of North America.

Fargo, ND

Only 3000 miles from Coyote Bay. If they can't deliver within 7 days, you get it free.

edit to add: diane, my conscience demands that I fess up. The original one is in Fargo, but....now there is one near you. Enjoy.

A quality "precision" haircut.

I can live without most fooffy beauty treatments but I'm finicky about a high quality haircut. Hopefully when we move to the BCS boonies fulltime I'll learn to adapt.

If the condition of my bangs when I try to trim them myself is an indication of my future retirement hairdo... now that's a frightening thing.

He's into nit-picking. Pompano made a visit to his house the other day with some free crabs.

Norma does a good cut here in Loreto. I think you'll be on the other side, but a haircut is worth a coast-to-coast trip, no?:dudette:

Absolutely Paula! Across the peninsula is a piece of cake for something so important. I'll get Norma's info from you soon. Thanks.

Walking mall? Does that mean Salvatierra street, up close to the Pescador? Maybe Don should give him a try, but I think Ola would do better at Norma's.

Let us know when you come to Loreto again, it would be nice to meet you!

BORSCHT !

A decent vacuum cleaner is hard to find.

Peanut Butter
Marshmallows
Pizza - Most crust tastes like jiffy-crap .. = sucks

I could go on; but, I find many more things I like that I can't get in the states. (i.e. Crema de Elote Soup from Campbells - made only in Mexico)
