I want to purchase a GPS for this winter's trip. Any recommendations?

It depends on what you want in a unit. If you just want your lat/long I would reeccomend the Garmin eTrex. It's very easy to use,cheap and 2 AA
batteries last a long time. If you are looking for something with maps and a handheld I can't help as my map unit is a Furuno on my boat.
I used a eTrex to bring a boat from Florida to San Diego via Panama (because the old sat nav on the boat was insanely complicated) so I have faith in

Do you want it for a vehicle or hand held? I have a garmin 330 and bought a chip for mexico that cost on e-bay $75.00 it works great all of mexico,

Sorry not being knowledgable about GPS, didn't know I was being to general.
I guess a couple of questions and a few desires would help me narrow my request down.
Could I take a vehicle version out of my truck and use it in my UTV as it has a 12V plug/cig. lighter? Is there an advantage to the handheld over the
vehicle version?
I am looking for more than a very basic model.
I have been looking at Garmin but which model?

For vehicle use, I have a Garmin NUVI 350. Also purchased a Mexico SD card that works from the border to and around Ensenada. A great combo. Going to
try it out on a trip to BOLA in about 2 weeks.
The 350 will work on an internal battery for walkabouts or an ATV/UTV 12v plug.
For dismounted exploring I would probably get a Garmin Colorado series
Also use a map for a backup.......

I use a Garmin 60Csx. good for the truck and the quad.
Problem is the maps. I have good USA maps and general Baja maps... If I stay on the highway the Baja maps are fine. But off-road .... I ending up

I use a handheld Garmin which I have used for yours backpacking, in the car and on the both here in the states on freshwater lakes and in the Sea of

Garmin 760 with Mexico chip purchased from LB Maps. The chip has great maps of most larger cities and an included topo map. The Garmin unit gives

You can't go wrong with garmin, pretty much the leader in GPS. I've got an older 2610. It has the capability of using SanDisks, I've got Baja on one,
the western US on another and a topo of the western US and Alaska. You can download from Garmin Map source on your computer. I use it on 2 motorcycles
and in my jeep and truck. The newer model is 2810 I think, and has a mp3 player built in.

I feel you have a better chance of no trouble with Refurbed units as they have had the eye of a Technician on them compared to a QA Assembly line. We

After reading people's advise & doing some research, I am leading toward the Garmin Nuvi 755. There has been positive feedback from traveler's of
Mainland Mexico, another site, but nothing from Baja travelers. We travel both Baja, Mainland & the SouthWest USA. What ya think?

Sounds good...just get the Mexico maps on a SD card from LB Maps and you are good to go!!!
Which map? The Baja only or all of Mexico SD card.

I believe the all of Mexico card....they quit making a seperate Baja card. Great detail from Otay, through the Blvd 200 corridor, down Hwy 1 and
around Ensenada.
Going to try it out to BOLA in a couple of weeks....pitting it against my navigator, bajamigo..........
Garmin would be my pick.
