One day in Ensenada: What would you do?

GeoRock - 6-8-2009 at 10:52 PM

How would you spend one day in Ensenada? I've been there plenty of times and hope to find something new to do in the area/city through Nomad responses.

Where would you go?
What would you do?
Where would you eat?

Describe your idea of an ideal day in the city and/or area.
Give plenty of details so a person could follow your lead!

postholedigger - 6-8-2009 at 11:09 PM

Eat fish tacos at Tacos Fenix on Juarez and Espinoza, go for a wine tasting at Valle De Guadalupe (I like Dona Lupe), then end at the Hussong's Cantina for a local touch.

rogerj1 - 6-8-2009 at 11:14 PM

I like going to the fish market and getting fish tacos at the small restaurants set up there. I second Hussong's. With any luck you can be there when a Mariachi band is playing.

bajabound2005 - 6-9-2009 at 06:57 AM

What day of the week?

fishbuck - 6-9-2009 at 07:03 AM

Paris de Noche to look at the expensive beautiful girls. Then over to Anthony's to look for a good enough girl but reasonably priced girl.
And then back to the hotel for a small party.
And then back to Anthony's if I still have any money.
Hope that helps.

Other than the latter, ignore all of Fishbuck's suggestions. Really need to know what the day of the week as there are different things on different days!

Von - 6-9-2009 at 08:15 AM

First id load up on some shrimp tacos right next to the black market.

Second id get a panga man and have him take me to Todos santos island to go surf some wild big waves and if there werent any waves id go to San miguel and Drink a 12 pack of beers. If thats close id go to Hussongs and drink a 24 pack there all Day:spingrin:

bacquito - 6-9-2009 at 08:35 AM

Go to the Malecon and take a boat ride around the harbor-cost about $2.50 and takes about 1/2 hr. You can see numerous seals (former residents of the ship Catalina), cargo ships, Tuna boats and just view the harbor while in the harbor.

Definitely sample the fish and shrimp tacos at Tacos Fenix. Best in town according to pretty much anyone you ask. For a more sophisticated (or a second) lunch, they have a great little cafe at the back of La Esquina de Bodegas (part of the Santo Tomas winery complex on Miramar), which is a wine store and art gallery space set up in an old wine storage building.

GeoRock - 6-9-2009 at 11:05 AM

Okay, I'll spill the beans. But don't tease me too much....

I'm going on the 4-night Carnival cruise with my daughter on July 27th, so we will be in the port (Ensenada) on Wednesday July 29th, docking at 9 a.m. and departing at 10 p.m.

I just know I'm gonna get a lot of teasing about being one of those 'ship tourons.' lol

I've been in Ensenada plenty of times, and have done many of the touristy things to do. But I'm sure there are ideas I can garner from nomads for other off the beaten track activities.
I have been to the wineries, Bufadora, Hussong's, Papas & Beer, and done a lot of shopping. But please, go ahead and mention those things if that is what you like to do. I am open to all suggestions, except perhaps those from fishbuck!

One time, JeepPete and I spent a quiet afternoon in uncrowded Hussong's. It is one of my best memories. There was an artist there, and he drew incredible renderings of us. Worth every cent of the $20 each he charged. I treasure those drawings, and the attached memories.

I've been to Bufadora about 3 times. It is fun, but I don't think I want to spend a day there again right now.

I've been on a couple wine tours, and drove there myself to Guadulupe Valley, and while I love wine (or as David puts it, "enjoy alcohol" --cute way of saying I like to swill one back), I don't want to spend a summer day at a winery. I would be interested in wine tasting in town without going inland to the wineries.

We are not interested in the ship's excursions. I don't like to be a cow in the herd.

So whatever we do, it will be a design of our own. I am interested in the boat ride around the harbor. Do they really only charge $2.50? Where does one find a boat?

Hey David, yes, that restaurant has very good vege food. Jeans took me there one time, I loved it.

Okay, Nomads, so on a WEDNESDAY, what would you do in Ensenada?
(I'm not big on shopping, I have enough junk in my house.)

DENNIS - 6-9-2009 at 11:47 AM

Cruise into town, get off the boat, rent a car and go up to the San Diego Zoo. Do anything with your daughter but, keep her out of Anthony's.
Keep her away from Fishbuck as well.

shari - 6-9-2009 at 11:56 AM

There is one restaurant I would not miss in Ensenada...this place was amazing, unique and oh so delicioso...best meat I've ever eaten and I really liked the idea...DO NOT FILL UP ON THE SALAD BAR...It's called PIMPAS and is near the cruise ship landing I think on the main highway along the shore. Sirena and Adrian took me there for a mothers day treat and I wasnt excited about the idea of a big meat restaurant but oh how wrong I was....they bring out like 30 different cuts and types of meat on big skewers so you can try them all....as much as you want...my favourite was the lamb and the ribs were superb...make sure you dont eat for 2 days before you go there and have lots of time to spend...and get the tables near the bar as that is where the sizzling hot meat skewers appear from the kitchen. Hint...just try a few bites of each as there is soooo much to try and it is all delicious... Do try the cinnamon pineapple...truly a delight.

then head for Hussongs...way fun...gotta love the tuba man!

bajaguy - 6-9-2009 at 12:04 PM

Shari......I think you mean Pampas...........Pimpas would be the small cafe inside of Anthony's:lol::lol::lol:

shari - 6-9-2009 at 12:07 PM

freudian slip?? Typo I believe....anyway....this place is the BOMB and has really cute waiters the gals will drool over....fabulous service which is often so rare here. This was THE coolest place I've ever eaten in all Baja.

Bajahowodd - 6-9-2009 at 12:11 PM

Of course, it's Pampas. But you may be right about the other place.

DanO - 6-9-2009 at 12:13 PM

Mmmm, a churrascaria. When I was working in Memphis my crew and I used to frequent Texas de Brazil, which we nicknamed "Swords of Meat." For some reason, I put on a bit of weight during that particular gig. Could have been the pulled pork for lunch every day as well.

bajasammy - 6-9-2009 at 12:18 PM

Hi Georock!

We did that cruise too a few years ago. The kids had a blast and ate everything in site! I'll bet you can get a pretty good deal on those now, huh?

Anyway, the kids really liked the Horse Carriage ride - probably because they actually let them hande the horse. It was a bit scary though, since you're on a busy street. Another fun thing to do is to rent Jet Skis out at Estero (I haven't seen them out yet this season - maybe you'd want to give them a call first).

Have Fun!

GeoRock - 6-9-2009 at 12:25 PM

Hey Bajasammy, the jet skis are a good idea! This is about my 7th or 8th time of doing this particular cruise. It isn't so much about the ports with this cruise, it's about the cruising. I like vacations where I don't have to clean, cook, do dishes, make beds, or attempt to get other people up and atom.

I can party till the wee hours, catch a couple hours of snooze, and then start my day with a bloody mary (or just plain OJ) if I wish! No driving, no work (only twice had to bring some work with me, will NEVER do that again), no problems.

I've gone on over 20 cruises so far, including out of Galveston and throughout the Carribbean.

I would not take small kids on a cruise, but when they are about 8 and up, it has got to be the best Mom vacation ever! There's always something to keep the kids busy, and thus moms get to relax also. And no chores.

Now my kids are grown and what they do on a cruise is their business, not mine. That has made it even more fun for me!

Anyway, I'd like to plan a unique adventure in Ensenada for the day. Thanks for your input.

My daughter is 21 of age, and I will definitely keep her away from fishbuck!

Georock, whatever you decide to do, I am very SURE you will enjoy a cigar somewhere in Ensenada! I'd also like to try that harbor boat tour. I've seen the boats with several seats available along the harbor walkway, somewhere behind the Caliente betting place.

Fill us in when you get back.

Packoderm - 6-9-2009 at 01:10 PM

I like the chicken restaurant where the rotisserie operates with bicycle wheels. I'd take a quick cab ride up the hill to the overlook. The harbor boat ride sounds cool. Maybe you could hire a boat for a hour of bottom fishing along with the cruise if you're into that. I wish I was at the fish taco stalls by the market right now. I buy a six pack of beer to go along with the tacos. I'd do a quick stroll up Ave. Lopez Mateos and buy a bottle opener and a nice blanket. Nobody's going to tease you about your cruise excursion. The ship might be the best kick back location in Ensenada.

You can find the boats at the harbor close to the Mexican Flag. Easy to find.

Yup, Bob took this photo of GeoRock at our great Matomi II camp party in 2004:

It was around the campfire at Nuevo Mazatlan... Here is Pat (Mrs. Mexray) also with cigar, sitting by me telling fun stories:

For dining, I would recommend Muelle Tres. It is located at the (north) end of the Malecon. If you are at the fish market facing the water, turn right and keep walking. Gray building on your right. They open at 1:00. Excellent food. Here's a "critique" on Muelle 3: http://masaassassin.blogspot.com/2009/02/muelle-tres-ensenad...

There is a new open air tour bus that goes around Ensenada (not to La Buf or anything like that). It might be an actual city tour. That might be a fun thing to do.

Also, the "new" art museum and cultural center, CEARTE is open and FREE! The current exhibit is Cuban art, the last one was Chinese. Don't know just yet what will be there at the end of July. It's located across Blvd Costero, almost directly across from Cruiseport when the ships dock.

Hola Georock:

I'm just glad to hear you will be able to actually "get off the boat" (Ship)

Right now, all of the cruise ships are anchoring out in the middle of the bay, and the pasengers are not allowed to disembark to Ensenada. Swine Flu you know. (N1H1 or whatever)

It's just killing business in the area, so it's good to know that by your sailing date at least, we will once again be able to welcome you folks from the cruise ships.

Bon Voyage!

bajamigo - 6-9-2009 at 04:37 PM

The Paradise actually docked today, and there were several rent-a-quads on the La Buf h'way.

Bajahowodd - 6-9-2009 at 04:38 PM

I'm somewhat amused by this concept of this thread. We've taken many cruises, all around the world. One of the complaints that always seems to arise is that with all the food onboard, already paid for, why should anyone go ashore for a meal. It's a conundrum. Perhaps not so much for the short Baja cruises. But, when someone pays in excess of $10,000 for, say, a European/ Mediterranean cruise, it almost seems self-defeating to go ashore seeking cuisine. Of course, if you are wealthy, it doesn't matter. As we all know, Georock is a Baja veteran. IMHO, other than a fresh fish taco by the fish market, you should be looking to do something realted to activities not involved with eating.

Slightly digressing from this thread, there are a few cruise operators in Europe that have created the a la carte type of cruise, so you pay for only what you use. If you choose to eat ashore in Santorini, you are not charged for a meal on the ship.

Oso - 6-9-2009 at 05:24 PM

I've always liked the Lonely Planet comment on the blow hole at La Bufadora: "Everybody goes there. Nobody knows why."

David, after seeing the pictures of the San Carlos hot springs I want to go there someday. I went looking for the ones off the Ojos Negros road a couple of years ago with some visiting friends from NC. The gate was locked, nobody around. Judging from the faded out condition of the old sign I don't think they're in business anymore. Maybe it dried up? The dirt road in was semi-hairy, very steep in places and we had to ford a stream. Made it ok in their 2wd rental truck, but I wouldn't try it in a low-slung car. Won't go there again unless I hear confirmation that they're open. Didn't look very impressive anyway.

DanO, there is a similar one in San Luis called "Espadas do Brasil", definitely top notch for carnivores.

bajabound2005 - 6-9-2009 at 05:59 PM

The road going to San Carlos Hot Springs is much improved but you do still ford a stream or two; and there is a newer place on that road about the 30 minutes before you hit San Carlos. They don't have hot springs but the place is gorgeous. Lots of picnic areas, pools, a man-made pond with paddle boats and kayaks, restaurant.

Website is not good....but here you go:
http://www.myspace.com/tierraprometida7

This place is actually tranquil...the website makes it look like a place to go off-road racing.

Either way, I don't think San Carlos or Prometida is a viable option for a cruiser.

But if you golf, a day at the Baja Country Club would be a great choice!

greybaby - 6-9-2009 at 09:43 PM

I'm chuckling because we actually lived in Ensenada for six years, moved back to the states and then went on a cruise - Cabo, Mazatlan & Vallarta. We were NEVER going to be one of "those" cruise ship tourists - but we were - and it was so darn much fun. In Ensenada for a day, I would probably want to just enjoy the malecon, take a walk in downtown and not go on any of the tour buses (LaBufadora, etc). There just isn't enough time to do them justice and truly you cannot get a flavor of the culture with such short stops. Just indulge yourself and enjoy the cruise. Then the next time you're in Ensenada, you can snicker at the tourists getting off the cruise ships and remark at how little they really get to see. And I have to say that though it really wasn't a cultural experience to go on a cruise down the Mexican Riviera it was a great vacation and fun to just relax and enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the ports. Have a great time!

I remember you eating that fried branch thing:lol::lol: what a great trip!

Many, many years ago I took a day cruise to Ensenada with a networking group I was in. I remember ending up in a bar with a fire poll (not to be confused with a stripper pole).:saint:

On the second floor of this place was a large hole in the floor surrounding the poll and you had to throw yourself onto the thing, hold on and ride it down to the first floor...what a blast!

Yeah...I remember that. Don't recall the name of the place but it's right off Lopez Mateos next to a popular fish restaurant, across the street from what is now Bamboo Garden, the best Chinese restaurant this side of Mexicali.
It's either that or I'm having some kind of wierd flashback.

Hmmm, let's see. Okay, what I garner from the advice so far is:

1) Stay away from fishbuck.
2) Keep my daughter away from fishbuck.
3) Take a boat ride around the harbour.
4) Smoke a cigar (no problem there).
5) Eat food, on or off the ship.
6) Drink alcohol.
7) Stroll the malecon.
8) Find a place where I can ride a pole....
9) And stay away from fishbuck. Oh, did I say that one?

Yeah sure, check her out at Anthony's. She works weekends there to earn extra money. Her name is Bubba. Don't be put off by the name, it's just her stage name. Remember to tip her well.

Appreciate the advice everyone! I will post back with details on how we ended up spending the day. Glad it's a Wednesday, my daughter won't have to work at Anthony's.

Update:

So my daughter and I disembarked Carnival Cruise Line's ship, the M.S. Paradise, mid-morning. We walked along the dock directly to the malecon area, to stand right at the huge Mexican flag seen from about everywhere in the city. It was really a short walk.

There were several cute shops, with very good prices. There was not even a need to negotiate, they wanted to sell their wares and had fair prices.

We walked along the malecon and came to a well-marked ramp to some touristy boats. Before we could even read their signs, we were approached and asked if we wanted a boat tour of the harbour. We paid $25 for two of us for a 40-minute tour.

It was pretty interesting, with a highlight being the barking sea lions' echo from underneath concrete areas that meet the ocean water where they have taken up residence.

A short walk brought us to the shopping district, where we contributed to the economy and purchased some cute gifts.

We walked over to Hussong's and had a margarita. I was hoping this young artist, who had drawn my and two others portraits three years ago, would be present. He wasn't at first, but after awhile he came in as if he sensed it was time. I had him draw my daughter, and he again did a terrific, highly talented job for a mere $20.

We were talking about leaving, and suddenly the bartender brought us another round of margaritas and said it was a two for one special. He had not mentioned that previously, so we were surprised. They were small, but tasty. The two for one special brought the price down to where it should have been to begin with.

Next, we took a cab the 1.5 mile to the vegetarian restaurant mentioned above, and had a terrific meal. The cab was $5. The driver wanted to wait for us, but I did not want him to wait for just a $5 fare. He kept insisting, but we finally promised to call and ask for him specifically. He did return immediately, and charged $5 to return to the ship. They are really hurting, and grateful for business. The boom days are over.

The food was absolutely delicious, and inexpensive. We had a squash soup that was good to the last drop, followed by breaded, fried creamy cheese with sauces and a salad. Everything we ordered was delicious and I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. It wasn't fancy inside, just your typical Mexican eatery, but well worth the trek. I believe the name is Senor Salud. Boy, do the ever know how to cook food!!!!

So, we didn't do anything all that spectacular. But we had a very pleasant, relaxing day. The highlight will forever remain the portrait, because it is so well done and very special.

Oh, across the street from Hussong's we could hear the whistles blowing at Papas and Beer. It just wasn't appealing on such a beautiful, relaxing, kick-back day.

So, there you have it. A Wednesday in sleepy Ensenada. I hope this gives other cruisers some ideas of activities.

San Carlos now has cabins you can rent for as long as you want and they are pretty decent. (My brother in law built them).

Georock,
Glad you had a good time. Sorry we missed you, our timing for being back in Punta Banda was off just a bit.

I think that was a Fishbuck pole dancing reference. Nothing to do with fishing.
