ARRIVED!!!!!

jerryjust - 7-11-2009 at 12:54 PM

We finally arrived Sunday last weekend,to find no electric,no water, 102 degrees,no breeze and bugs that bit just around the ankles.Sunday night beautiful rain and in the morning a swimming pool in our family room.First summer and the last. How anyone can enjoy this when town is deserted just a few eat places opened, when ever they feel like it.Well we love it here but never in the summer. Now I feel better....;)

A bit short on detail. I'm guessing Mulege?

jerryjust - 7-11-2009 at 01:03 PM

Sorry about that I thought it was all over Baja Sur.

For those of us who can't live there full time, we find our trips to our Baja homes are always "working vacations in a third world nation" (to quote Jimmy Buffett). If you're not there you can't be expected to keep up on the utilities, roof, water pumps, electrical/solar situation, so you have to know that something is going to go wrong.

As EGL has taught me, It if doesn't kill you it will make you stronger.

Maybe next summer you'll be more prepared because this summer you will fix the leaks, solve the electrical and water issues. Next summer you'll remember to bring a fan to use once you have electricity, and wear your bathing suit to battle the heat, and don't forget the can of Raid.

Enjoy the rest of your "vacation"!

Jerry,
Your answer to Bajahowodd's question, "I'm guessing Mulege" (?) doesn't make any sense to me. Where are you??

Bajahowodd - 7-11-2009 at 01:21 PM

Troll? My guess was because it did recently rain in Mulege and I've got the mud all over my floor mats to prove it!

Bob and Susan - 7-11-2009 at 01:42 PM

actually mulege hasn't lost power YET:lol::lol:

it's comming:lol::lol:

noproblemo2 - 7-11-2009 at 06:55 PM

Jerry, once you get the little things worked out you will hopefully have a nice time. Have a nice cold cerveza, turn on a cool shower and think of worse places you could be, ALASKA, brrrr;D

akbear - 7-11-2009 at 07:03 PM

80 degrees in Fairbanks Alaska with 20 hours of daylight !

im guessing rosarito

bajabound2005 - 7-12-2009 at 07:41 AM

i don't think you'll see 102 in Rosarito and he does mention Baja Sur...maybe it's a game like "where in Baja is this"

bajamigo - 7-12-2009 at 07:43 AM

102š in Rosarito? It hasn't been that warm there since the earth cooled.

DENNIS - 7-12-2009 at 07:48 AM

I think Jerry was just having a bad dream so, it could have been anywhere.

Bajahowodd - 7-12-2009 at 12:09 PM

Jerry who?

Hook - 7-12-2009 at 12:17 PM

Jerryjust won't say.

Keri - 7-12-2009 at 12:31 PM

The only problem that I found at our camper this summer was the smell of rodents (mice I hope) in one of the closets! Wouldn't you know it, the fumigators were passing by the next day and for only 400 pesos...we let them do their spraying as long as they included the "pellets" for the mice! The pellets dry the mice from the inside so they just turn to dust, not rotting flesh (or so they said)!

Whatever Jerry is up to, I agree with Paulina, always expect something!

Phil C - 7-13-2009 at 06:14 PM

I still don't know where everybody is, except Woody of course, he's in "his own little world" :D:D:D I guess it's hot everywhere......

shari - 7-13-2009 at 06:23 PM

saturday we went to Doņa Maria's 100th birthday party in San Ignacio...we decided to get there later in the afternoon....when we stepped out of the truck...Oh My Friggin Goddess....it was like someone stuffed me in an oven...just unbelievably hot...we greeted everyone...stayed for a bit then ran down to the river and stayed in a good long while. I just cant imagine how people live in that with no air conditioning!!!

DanO - 7-13-2009 at 06:24 PM

As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, "its always something . . . if it's not one thing, it's another." Here's a few of my own, in no particular order:

1. Outside patio and living room floor are at same grade, but sliding glass doors separating them are installed slightly below grade and drain holes on patio are installed slightly above grade. Result? Patio drains into living room, making living room a fun watersports area during rain. Fix? Cut new drain holes below grade of patio and reinstall sliding glass doors above grade and with sills to prevent water migration.

2. Electrical to outlets is wired not in proper circuits or with proper conduit, but in "spiders" of plain stranded wire embedded in tile floor and brick walls, and cabinet maker then screws cabinets to the walls with long bolts. Result? A short has occurred somewhere one of the dozens of cabinets has been screwed in, disabling all of the outlets for entire house. Fix? Cut grooves in tile floor, cut out cabinet backs and gouge holes in brick walls to lay in new romex to save and connect most of the existing outlets. Tile floors still not re-grouted.

3. Much of the exterior copper plumbing is installed above ground, running along footings of house. Result? It gets stolen by unknown tweakers. Fix? Buy copper plumbing again and pay extra to have it buried like it should have been in the first place.

4. Wood stove in bedroom is installed with vent pipe going through hole in tile roof without proper. Instead, vent pipe is sealed to edges of hole in tile roof with asphalt roofing compound. Result? On first ignition (on a freezing night in January), roofing compound melts, drips down pipe into bedroom, fills room with toxic smoke and nearly ignites, almost destroying house. Fix? Spend the night with the windows open and then spend a few bucks to buy the proper flashing.

5. (This is my favorite.) Septic system vent pipe outside of bathroom appears to go up through roof, but in fact does not, just ending right at roof and allowing sewer gasses to vent into bathroom window instead of above the roof line. Result? Duh. Bathroom smells like rotting poop. Fix? Drill hole through roof and extend vent pipe to properly vent gasses.

There's more, but you get the idea.

Plan ahead on your next visit. Prepare everything expecting the worse upon your return. Depart knowing something will change the course of your return...... I have used numerous comments and solutions from this forum to save my return problems. If you visit Baja Sur in July or later expect the heat, humidity, and possible rain.

I always have a negative balance on my power bill. That (three) AC unit must absolutely go on for my wide body. I already experianced the power being off on a late September visit (drove and arrived on a Sunday). The heat and humidity is terrible.

Cover ALL drain holes... Even the sink overflow holes. I stuff foil in all the holes. The roaches love to come through them. I have been brushing my teeth upstairs and a set of roach antennas will pop out of the little overflow drain. Use some simple vegetable oil on the pee traps to avoid the water evaporating on long departures. Although I have a pretty good door seal, I still spray poisen around the whole perimeter. I also run some bug bombs when I leave. Although I have not been able to find any in Loreto on my last two visits.

I also take all my pasta, rice, and spices and put them in the freezer. The humidity ruins them. Another reason to keep the power on.

These are all a result of Nomads providing solutions to similiar questions.

I also put out sticky traps. Two in the kitchen. One down stairs next to the sofas and one in each bedroom upstairs. I have never caught a rodent but have caught some bugs.

I think the roaches might be coming through the AC units. I have a deffusor type downstairs and wall units upstairs. I have not figured out how to stop that yet? I tried spray around the units but I do not think that works. Everytime I start them I can hear the fans grinding them up...... This will be another Nomad solution.................

Oh, fill all exterior holes with foam!!!

I do not think there is anyway to keep roaches out of your casa other than poisen. I look forward to the responses.

By the way, the Dorado bite in Loreto last week was wide open! Go north and you will find thousands of Dorado. The biggest I saw was 50.10 on the scale.
