Nomads and the art of persuasion

Osprey - 8-14-2009 at 10:27 AM

Mushy

The Baja Nomad board is never boring. One reason is that many members hold onto their beliefs with unyielding grasps; refuse to swerve from long-held personal views and opinions on a staggering array of subjects.

I usually stay out of the sometimes heated discourse that comes about when two strong-willed people have antipodal positions on a subject but I am awestruck at times that they can keep such resolve in the face of very well couched arguments. The reason I find it all so interesting is that I have always been kind of wishy-washy, lacking the conviction shown by those posters I speak of.

It goes back a ways because I can remember thinking strongly about some things that later meant almost nothing to me. I have been known to give up and give in right in the middle of arguments (sometimes near the beginning, truth be told). Could Baja Nomads be a secret bunch of college debate team alumni who can’t let go of the past? For whatever reason some of the banter goes point-counter-point for days and I am often bounced about like a shuttle c-ck as my convictions swing from one solidly stated point of view to the opposite.

Sometimes I wonder if the combatants know I’m out here with some of my inconsistent cousins and they just enjoy bouncing me around. On certain subjects, on particular days I’m sure that’s the case but then I could be mistaken. It is very difficult to take in all these well-worded facts and opinions, evaluate them and know exactly what to accept, what to reject. Most of the time I jump right over Hobson and run smack into a dreaded false dilemma.

Anyway, keep up the good work. Please be careful with your grammar and check your invectives at the door.

Well said Osprey! Like Obi Wan Kenobi said "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our point of view"

I'm glad Obi said it and not you.
"Truths we cling to"
"Our point of view"
This is so repeatedly redundant that it's repeatedly redundant.
Kinda like saying, "It'll feel better when it stops hurting."

I meant a chicken on a van from the airport

HA! Billions of people do just that. Nothing wrong with it, dead, alive, or fictional, no difference.

Have you ever read "The Phantom Tollbooth"?
I can still see the Spelling Bee and the Humbug fighting in the market.
