Drive my truck

Muddyrabbit - 9-6-2009 at 06:26 AM

Myself and my G/F are coming to Baja in December, we should arrive 2 or 3 days after Christmas but plans are not set in stone yet. We plan to ride south on 1 motorcycle and 1 ATV. We're hoping to find someone to drive our truck from San Felipe to La Paz, or just a little north of La Paz. Looking for someone to do it, or suggestions.

BajaNuts - 9-6-2009 at 06:00 PM

welcome muddybunny,

Everyone is pretty distracted with the hurricane right now. If you don't get any responses right now, try re-posting in a month or 6-weeks. You'll still have lots of time to iron out details before your trip. After things have settled down a bit, folks will be able to commit to travel plans. Right now, everything is so up in the air for so many people.

Good luck and hope you have an awesome trip in Dec!.

It can be done off-road for the most part----------assuming that is what they mean ?!?!?!

bajamikey - 9-6-2009 at 08:57 PM

his post says nothing about riding a quad down hwy 1 to la paz

DENNIS - 9-6-2009 at 09:23 PM

Ride anywhere you freakin want. In '67 I rode a Honda 50 from Wyoming to California. My butt's stll sore.

bajajurel - 9-6-2009 at 09:23 PM

Doesn't seem as crazy as the people in mid July riding bicycles down Mex 1. I guess it's fun coming down the hill in to Santa Rosalia though.

Muddyrabbit - 9-7-2009 at 06:04 PM

Meredith aint to great on two wheels yet and she is really nervous about taking the DR350, and since it is supposed to be an off road trip we were planning on putting her on the ATV. At the risk of turning this into an off road thread, is this a bad plan?

woody with a view - 9-7-2009 at 06:13 PM

stay offroad and it'll be a blast. otherwise, just drive the truck in comfort and pull the bikes off the trailer and explore when the itch surfaces...

vandenberg - 9-7-2009 at 06:13 PM

Riding an ATV down Hw 1 will get you edjucated in a hurry!:biggrin:

Are you looking for someone to drive your truck as a support vehicle that accompanies you?

Muddyrabbit - 9-7-2009 at 07:52 PM

I guess I could have been more clear. I was looking into having the truck taken south so we could ride one way, take our time, linger a little longer, and then load up on the truck at the end.

BajaNuts - 9-7-2009 at 10:18 PM

Hey there 'rabbit...

as you have probably learned, "ya gotta be a little more specific!"

Don't despair, keep working on your trip, and like I said,

if nothing comes around, re-post in a few weeks.

allthebest...

Bob and Susan - 9-8-2009 at 05:30 AM

driving an atv on mex one is too dangerous
think tires

that thing would flip in a second at those speeds
no great emergency help here
you'd be screwed
get that "fly out" insurance

its a regular two lane road with trucks and cars
some drive fast 80+mph

would you drive your atv down the interstate in ohio?
of course not...

drive the motorcycles and have a good time

those bmw's are FAST!!!

Muddyrabbit - 9-8-2009 at 07:09 AM

Uhh, I never said anything about driving the quad down Mex 1...

bajamikey - 9-8-2009 at 06:26 PM

Muddyrabbit, my wife and i have rode many times from Tecate to San Ignacio and back. she rides a yfz 450 quad me on my ktm 525 m/c. with nothing more than a AAA MAP. so just plan your gas stops as you know the quad needs more gas..........i put a big tank on the quad. will be looking forward to a trip report, have a great time

Muddyrabbit - 9-8-2009 at 06:44 PM

That's a little more like the spirit I expected to find here, instead of this 'your nuts for taking a quad' stuff. She'll be running my Rincon with a Scepter NATO can that carries an extra 5 gallons. Gives that thing a 200 mile plus range. I'll be on my BMW X-Country, also about a 200 mile range in current trim. We are both also blessed in that we grew up about an hour from a riding area called Wellsville that has been politely described as the evil step brother of the Yuma Proving Grounds. It was like growing up with an insane off road training ground close to home. Got a nice route layed out with proven GPS tracks from other riders, and the passport cards coming. Can't wait to get back again.

bajamikey - 9-8-2009 at 07:06 PM

The yuma proving grounds are in my back yard. do a lot of four wheeling there

BajaNuts - 9-8-2009 at 07:12 PM

WHEW! That sounds a lot better!

Sorry for the confusion, 'rabbit. The first post sounded a little vague, folks were just concerned for your well-being.

Sounds like you have a handle on things and like I said, if noone come forward now re-post in a few weeks.

HAVE FUN!

Sounds like you are riding off road to La Paz... Maybe using Kacey Smith's Baja GPS Guide, Volume 2? This E Book is desigened for m/c riders and routes that stay off the highway. http://bajagpsguide.com

If you are keeping it all off road.. then great... You will have a blast... Remember that fuel is not available where you may need to have it, so have your chase truck meet you where you will be getting low!

The reason many here question using the highway is bacause it is very narrow, with no shoulders and often is elevated with drop offs. This highway south of San Quintin is barely 20 feet wide and should never be used by bicycles or ATVs because they don't maintain a safe velocity. Here is a photo I took 2 months ago of Hwy. 1 between El Rosario/ San Quintin:

Watch out for black cows, too!

mulegemichael - 9-8-2009 at 07:38 PM

hey muddyrabbit, i am not here to criticize, only to caution...i very rarely feel safe in my toyota 4runner on hwy one, let alone on a 4WHEELER...ya got some cajones, amigo...my final advise; THERE IS NO SHOULDER out there...yer in the mainstream and if ya can't keep up to those buses and 16 wheelers, yer ground beef...think about it, amigo

Crusoe - 9-8-2009 at 07:45 PM

The Hiway averages about 19ft. between the white lines. I have stoped at different places along the route over the years and got out of my truck and grabed my tape measure and measured it a many spots, just out of presonal curiosity. It does get wider the farther you go south.

I see you're point BajaWarrior, some people really can't read, or just don't bother to read before they respond. Really blown away by the fact that so many people on here don't understand the concept of riding off road in Baja. Especially love the guy who says you can't drive a quad on pavement at high speed without flipping it. Our route, recommended by other riders who have used it, does unfortunately have one section of about 20 miles of pavement, which is going to eat a bit at the tires. Fortunately since the ATV can maintain 65mph (without danger of flipping if you not totally incompetent) it won't take long to put that behind us. Some of the rougher off road sections Meredith will probably be able to outrun me on that quad versus my bike. I would like to thank all the people that sent me U2U messages telling me to ignore the naysayers who don't get it.

Yeah...You've got a point. lots of people post here just to see themselves talk. I do it myself, sometimes.
The fact remains, relevant or not, nobody wants to see you as a hood ornament on a Freightliner.
I'm sure you'll run your trip and, hopefully, without incident but, you will come away from it with a new-found respect for HWY 1.
Have a good trip.

I just assumed you were. How are you going to get there? I guess you'll need some big-ass wire cutters if you plan to go off road and don't forget to close the gates behind you.

Packoderm - 9-9-2009 at 12:31 PM

I think they knew full well but were having fun with it. I couldn't help but visualize somebody going the length of Mex 1 on a quad. I wish you well and that you have fun on your adventure.

David K - 9-9-2009 at 06:13 PM

There are still many ways to go from north to south than on Hwy. 1 folks...

Heck, even the maps show them! As I mentioned before, there is an E book with total GPS directions to use the Baja 1000 course and other roads and trails from the past to ride to La Paz on dirt.

Muddyrabbit - 9-9-2009 at 06:27 PM

For example,

Coco's to Bay of LA via the Calamajue wash.

Bay of LA to San Francisquito

San Francisquito to Vizcaino via old SCORE course through Rancho Miraflores.

Vizcaino to San Ignacio via Mex 1

San Ignacio to San Juanico via El Datil (mud flats) or the rocky washed out inland route.

San Juanico to Ciudad Constitucion (mostly pavement)

Cuidad Constitucion to La Paz via San Evaristo on the coast. (you'll need a 180 mile fuel range, but you may find fuel in one of the towns, Tinajitas IIRC)

The man has done his homework...

But seriously, be careful on the highway!

Vizcaino to San Ignacio

David K - 9-9-2009 at 06:51 PM

Actually... you can use some of the old main road (pre-1973)!

We spotted it just east of Mex. 1, a few miles south of Vizcaino (just south of El Tablon on the old road): (photo from 2 months ago)

I think you'll be fine. The ranchos can be a welcome sourch of help when needed. Wish I was going with you.

["Coco's to Bay of LA via the Calamajue wash."] Be really carefull on the water crossings. Dirt bike probably OK but not sure about the ATV. There is one crossing that is pretty deep. May want to walk it to be sure. It not far from where you drop into the wash and you'll know when you get to it.

Rather than ride the quad/ dirt bike on Hwy. 1 in the small sections you list... You may be able to ride along side the highway at the base of the elevated roadbed... But, if you can maintain 55 mph, that should be good.

A great photo by jrbaja showing the lack of passing room for anyone other than an auto on Hwy. 1 (south of San Quintin):

Go for it!

Let your mother do the worrying. Jeez, if someone wants to loan me a dirt bike or an ATV, I would go with you. And I won't be your father, either!:bounce:

Muddyrabbit - 9-11-2009 at 10:02 AM

Got an extra...

MikeLikeBaja - 9-11-2009 at 10:24 AM

So let me get this straight. You guys are going to ride unicycles from San Felipe all the way to Brazil? Man, don't do it. Just go as far as Panama. The rest of the way is much to dangerous.

wornout - 9-11-2009 at 10:44 AM

I live in San Felipe and may be able to do this but won't know until mid November. So I guess I am saying you can pencil me in for the time being and we can discuss a plan at that time.

Packoderm - 9-11-2009 at 11:01 AM

While riding your quad, it might be easier to wait for the semi truck to go by before you pass the vehicle towing the boat.
