Hurricane Rick

Lauriboats - 10-16-2009 at 01:17 PM

Hey have you guys seen this????

comitan - 10-16-2009 at 01:49 PM

Yup.!!!!!!!!!!! Are you ready?

Lauriboats - 10-16-2009 at 02:09 PM

Not sure, the roof is being replaced on my house in Mulege as we speak, how about you?

comitan - 10-16-2009 at 02:29 PM

I got ready before Jimena and have not taken anything down, just securing young trees.

eguillermo - 10-16-2009 at 02:32 PM

I just asked a similar question in another thread, so forgive me if it seems like I am spamming the board. Probably I'm just showing symptoms of nervous anxiety :o

My big $1000 question is: how long will a storm like this keep things out of sorts? La Paz weather forecasts actually show pretty low winds right up to Wednesday, after which they forecast that it will really open up and blow 30 - 40 m.p.h.

But the forecast only goes to Friday. Would you tend to expect it to fizzle out and return to normal wind patterns by Sunday, Monday? A whole week after it started blowing up?

I'm still wondering if the hurricane could render a whole week of my two-week vacation unfishable . . . and I suppose a lot of the dirt roads will become unpassable too, depending on the precipitation.

aldosalato - 10-16-2009 at 03:22 PM

http://www.lapazbaja.com/
slight wind from the North. Still hot and humid for middle October but not too bad.......... best it would be it keeps west out in the ocean but doubt it will since October statistic always bring hurricane to turn east. Mazatlan maybe? Better be prepared in the Southern Baja tip anyway.

vandenberg - 10-16-2009 at 03:31 PM

Let's hope the GFDL computer prediction, usually the most accurate, is wrong this time.

BajaNaranja - 10-16-2009 at 04:22 PM

Double farts. Some family & friends and I are supposed to fly into San Jose Del Cabo mid-day Wednesday for a fishing tournament in East Cape. Looks dicey at best.

Beyond that, my fingers are crossed for the locals - there's been enough Chubasco abuse in Baja already in 2009, you guys deserve a break.

comitan - 10-16-2009 at 05:48 PM

If the current path holds true they will probably cancel your flight.

comitan - 10-16-2009 at 07:15 PM

A majority of the models have Rick coming over the southern Baja.

I must be on the wrong site. Which one shows Rick heading over BCS?

Here comes Rick?

Sorry everyone, but we won't be posting on Rick. I have to fly up to the US today for a medical emergency involving my daughter. Good luck to you all - buckle down and hang in there. My thoughts will be with all of you - I pray this bad boy heads West but it doesn't look very promising.

Bob and Susan - 10-17-2009 at 05:39 AM

tie down the palapa before you go...

HaciendaCerritos - 10-17-2009 at 05:46 AM

LOL - Yep she's tied down and staying that way! Now I just gotta make sure the workers put all the outside furniture away and not decide on their own that "it won't hit here". I'll keep an eye out here and eebmike while stateside. I'm sure the hospital has wi-fi (at least I HOPE so).

Lauriboats - 10-17-2009 at 06:37 AM

Strengthening, extremely dangerous, cat 5, not good.

mulegemichael - 10-17-2009 at 06:40 AM

they just brought the palm fronds for our "replacement" palapa yesterday..the new one we lost in jimena...great!

shari - 10-17-2009 at 06:58 AM

OH geezo...doesnt look good for those fishing tournaments at all. But sometimes you can fish a day or two after the storm passes...if you can find the boat!! Lots of structure and hungry fish. the problems will be power outages as it knocks towers down...flooding etc...so make sure you have gas in advance.

russ...why dont you just come over here for a visit?

So what is with Woody who is always first in predicting these babies???

what to do...

msawin - 10-17-2009 at 06:59 AM

Suppose to leave Tuesday for Loreto. We will see.

Pompano - 10-17-2009 at 07:08 AM

On the way now. ETA about the same time as Rick.

Beachgirl - 10-17-2009 at 07:14 AM

Nice timing, Pompano. Maybe we should all make reservations at the Hotel Mulege now??? Getting ready to bag everything...AGAIN....found that tying a knot doesn't cut it. Have to tape the bags or water gets in them anyway. Hoping this one turns out like Norbert. Seventy plus large garbage bags all stowed away, hunkered down at the hotel with our camp stove, food and water waiting for a fifteen minute light rain and dark sky, then nothing. Hoping...guess we will know in a day or two...

where is the history of hurricanes?

Dianamo - 10-17-2009 at 07:17 AM

during the "Jimena" discussion someone posted an article regarding the history of hurricanes that have hit Baja, but my Nomad search is not yielding the results, nor my Google search. If someone remembers or can find this post, please direct me.

Dianamo,

Try the Baja Insider. They have quite a weather page.

Dianamo - 10-17-2009 at 08:08 AM

Thanks Vandenburg, this is the data.

Regarding October storms, notice that Liza hit on Oct 1 as an H4, then Norbert on Oct 11 as an H2. Only four storms have hit after Oct. 17 and only two after Oct 22 (Thursday is the 22) as tropical storms. Let's hope and pray to 'dog' that Rick follows this pattern and weakens substantially!

We will miss your onsite reports HaciendaCerritos...take care of you and yours and we will say a prayer things go well for your daughter as well as your palapa. Let us know how things go on all fronts.

Maybe this time we will be able to replace our dilapidated palapa? Grmpb will be relieved.

Russ - 10-19-2009 at 06:21 AM

From this morning. Slight decrease in strength andprojected path is a bit more South. I'm showing a wider shot because there is a second ridge of weather moving south that is suppose to influence Ricks movement. The big question is what will happen between the 1st & 2nd weather systems moving South. Good news for us up here is that we appear to be out of any projected paths. But I think we'll get some rain. Anyway it's still early.

Never thought I'd be wishing for strong winds from the north, but I am right now!

bajalorena - 10-19-2009 at 09:44 AM

From our house, I see one boat at Rancho Leonero, none at Spa, and just a few at Palmas. They are in the process of getting them pulled right now, Verdugo's are all out already. It is cloudy with a small breeze, water is calm. Preparations are being made, we will probably put the storm boards back up tomorrow morning.
We filled the vehicles with fuel, and still need to get the gas cans filled for the generator. There are lots of vehicles at the new gas station. The old gas station is closed.

El Jefe - 10-19-2009 at 09:52 AM

We are getting it together here on the East Cape too. Cloudy now with a bit of wind on the water, enough to blow out the surf. Waves are actually a bit smaller today. Yesterday...yesterday was the day at a certain east cape surf spot that will go nameless because I would be lashed at least 9 times with fresh cut PALM fronds by all the surfets out there.
Double overhead, glassy all day and oh boy did I get some fun mackers! It's good to be alive.

This storm won't come anywhere near Mulege.
It's amazing how a storm that was just yesterday a H5 is already down to a H2 and when it goes by Cabo (more then a 100 miles south) it will be a tropical storm. Mother nature in action.

TSRICK.gif - 32kB

Bajahowodd - 10-19-2009 at 02:46 PM

Be thankful for steering winds. A storm such as Rick would likely have sustained a higher intensity had it stayed closer to the mainland coast. The water temp drops quickly as one passes Northwest. Should still have plenty of moisture.

Bob and Susan - 10-19-2009 at 02:46 PM

thank god!!!

Russ - 10-19-2009 at 04:45 PM

Most everyone pulled their boats today. There is a really good surge at the boat ramp today. A few dinged their boats up when the water retreated and left their bunks high and dry or wind and surge pushed them off their projected path. BOOM! I hate that!
So, though we aren't looking at rain or storm winds (yet) the swells have had their effect here.

That big turn East is still educated conjecture. The storm center continues on the NNW track. Don't say whew just yet. The tip is going to feel this thing, and someone is going to get a lot of rain. Maybe 200 or so miles of BCS could get drenched.

Desertsurfergal - 10-19-2009 at 08:57 PM

Supposed to be in Cabo on the 27th, then on to Mazatlan on the 28th, and Puerto Vallerta on the 29th...hopefully great surf and no diversions.

shari - 10-19-2009 at 09:07 PM

Late this afternoon I noticed those "washboard abs" swells coming in from the southeast....hmmm....and it was blowing 20 knots from the west.
The swell is building constantly so we had to deal with the anchored pangas and tomorrows clients.
They wisely decided to make tonights c-cktail hour extend a bit longer and take a rest day tomorrow....good idea.
Last I heard was they were heading to the palapa bar.

I digress....swell is arriving now and expected to peak tomorrow...sooner than I expected.
geez woody...wish you were here

Desertsurfergal - 10-19-2009 at 09:14 PM

Shari, thanks for the swell update. We will see for next week...probably to soon to think of that, huh? Be safe.

bajalorena - 10-19-2009 at 09:43 PM

Friends that were to arrive in Cabo tomorrow on a cruise ship called tonight and said that it was announced to the ship that they would pass the port of Cabo San Lucas, soooo we will not be going to meet them. Not sure where they are going........ but I am sure they will still have a good time. Not that we would have to deal with traffic or anything, I was in Costco the other day and could have shot off a cannon and hit no one.

Bob H - 10-19-2009 at 11:07 PM

we call it "courduroy to the horizon" when those suckers line up like that. if we get any surf it'll be a bonus. we're looking forward to a few days of TUNA and relaxation.....

good to hear Rick is fading from the weekend projections!

El Jefe - 10-20-2009 at 06:47 AM

Still waiting on the east cape. Drizzle all night and one nice little shower. That's about it. Surf still not as big as it was two days ago. However a light wind has been on it all night so it is too sloppy for my taste.

Got the shovel at the ready for when big rain hits. Little rivlets can be turned with a spade to go thataway before they become erroding rivers.
Running the generator since we haven't had sun for a while. Glad to have backup. All is well.

Spoke with the in-laws in La Paz last night and guess they got quite a bit of rain. I think it was coming in under the doorways! Not too much wind, though.

Seeing the history of those hurricanes was pretty interesting.
I've heard my hubby and his mother talk about Liza. He must have been 8 or 9 when that hit La Paz, but he remembers trucks rolling through with bodies from when the arroyo flooded (or the dam broke). Looking at the numbers, looks like that was, "the big one"! I'm sure it still has lasting memories for many in La Paz!

Much ado about nothing here in Buena Vista. Highlight of the night was 2 double Yahtzees, if which 1 was mine!

Unbelievable yet true! Never trust a storm track more than a week off 5 days out 3 days away a day old.

Cabo must be paying protection fees.
