What is your #1 Lure of choice?

TheColoradoDude - 12-12-2009 at 01:24 PM

If you could only carry 1 type of lure on your boat what would it be? 1 lure for trolling and casting.

Something that would catch you fish on both sides of Baja.

Okay!

snowcat5 - 12-12-2009 at 01:30 PM

I use Old Spice and $100 bills...

Don Alley - 12-12-2009 at 01:37 PM

I don't have any lures that I use for both trolling and casting.

I think what works best is matching the right lure to the right tactic to the right situation. I don't think there is an all-around lure that catches fish on its own.

I have favorite lures that are suited to my favorite ways to fish. And I find some situations where I haven't found a favorite lure for.

Luhr Jensen Krocodile -
Color: Blue Mackerel/Chrome.
Size: 3 7/8", 2 1/4 oz.

Red Devil and Super Duper.

Skipjack Joe - 12-12-2009 at 02:06 PM

How about a compromise on your part:

A single best trolling lure AND a single best cast lure.

They really don't overlap very well as Don stated.

Howard - 12-12-2009 at 07:03 PM

I am with monoloco, a good ole fashion plain cedar plug.

Fish have to be one the dumbest creatures on earth! It usally is my go to lure after all else fails. How could they possibly think that that looks like a meal?

Timo1 - 12-12-2009 at 07:10 PM

Purple and black Rappalla for trolling
chrome Kroc for casting
That darn cedar plug rates right up there tho

Howard - 12-12-2009 at 07:16 PM

Speaking of dumb fish, using a plain, beat up cedar plug, how many time does a Dorado have to take the lure, spit it out, take it another 2 or 3 times and spit it before it just can’t help itself and take it for good! Their loss, my gain, a delicious meal.

Luhr Jensen's Hus Lure...used to be made by Evans....not the same lure as before..but for a small spoon...great lure...

fishbuck - 12-12-2009 at 08:37 PM

Well, I hope you bring more than 1 of each!

Hey did you catch any fish of the Rosarito pier?

I know you fished off Serena from Ensenada early this summer.
You guys caught a few fish so you saw what lures worked.
I fished about a month later and we caught like 25 fish. Yellowfin, Yellowtail, and Dorado. Every lure we used caught fish. And live bait too!

1 Purple Rapala
1 Blue sardine Rapala
1 Mexican flag feather
1 Crockdile
1 Blue and white iron jig
1 Cedar "natural" plug

Don't even go to Baja without this minimum kit. Plus a few I've either for gotten or haven't used yet.

Hey Dude. I still have some money on account with Serena. Do you want to fish next summer? Anytime after Aug 1 to Sept 15.
4-6 anglers.

And no drunk chicks throwing up all over the place.
Yeah, they told me about it!...

BornFisher - 12-12-2009 at 08:41 PM

1 1/2 oz fishtrap for the combo.
But really it`s too complicated for one answer.
I mean you just aint a gonna use a rapala to yoyo for yellows!!

Cardon Man - 12-12-2009 at 08:43 PM

The old cedar plug has many fans and i am among them! for trolling it would be a fine choice.

Now for casting...i'm with baitcast, give me a kastmaster spoon.

Do you yoyo a Fishtrap? I never thought of that. Thought they were for slow trolling.

Swimbaits

Skipjack Joe - 12-12-2009 at 09:03 PM

They're not my favorite yet but so far I've done real well with them. They work well casting or trolling (slowly).

FishTrapSwimBait.jpg - 33kB

Russ - 12-13-2009 at 09:20 AM

Since I'm stuck up here I've been stocking a new tackle box. So far it's shore fishing stuff only. Can't imagine only having one favorite.

Don Alley - 12-13-2009 at 09:51 AM

For casting I use lots of the currently out-of-business Megabaits. Cast, let them drop, retrieve, pause and let them drop.... River To Sea makes a suitable replacement called a Sea Rock but they're hard to find, and I'm trying P-Line's copy but they are expensive. Krocs are my second choice.

Then there's yo-yo and deep jigging. I don't really have a favorite right now.

Trolling

1. Shallow water, reefs...I like the Yozuri rapala types, blue.

2. Offshore, dorado, tuna. I'm using plain cedar plugs a bunch, but still troll "feathers." Plastic skirted ones, and I'm not yet picky about brand, head shape or colors. Just don't fish them enough. And I've had some good luck with Marauder type stuff lately.

Skipjack Joe - 12-13-2009 at 10:04 AM

Don,

What size is your goto Megabait? the one you use the most.

baitcast - 12-13-2009 at 10:18 AM

There,s lures that are most effective and than there are those that are the most fun both on the beach and off.

No question about it but top-water is the most fun,big and small Spooks and various poppers.

If you haven,t tryed top-water yet your missing a ton of fun.
Rob

Anyone can catch fish with a boat but only El Pescador Grande can get them from the beach.

[Edited on 12-13-2009 by baitcast]

monoloco - 12-13-2009 at 10:59 AM

When I was in Panama last year we used Yozuri Surface Bull poppers a lot and caught many different kinds of fish with them. Even caught a 200+ lb Tuna with it, quite a workout on a spinning rod, for everybody on the boat.

Howard - 12-13-2009 at 11:57 AM

Russ

How in the world do you keep your tackle box so clean and organized?

baitcast - 12-13-2009 at 12:18 PM

I was thinking the same thing about Russ,s tackle box??????? No rusty hooks, everything is shiny everything seems to have its place, its so organized it looks unused but I know different,my congrats,I had one like that once:lol:

bill erhardt - 12-13-2009 at 12:23 PM

No matter which lure you decide is the most likely to succeed, there will be some days when no fish will have anything to do with it while there may be an old relic in the bottom of your tackle box that would be just the ticket, if only you could figure out which one......
Here are some in action that have consistently worked for me in recent years for pelagics on both sides of the peninsula.

A 200lb tuna on a spinning reel? I can't image that.

Bill, loved that first wahoo picture but that bloodied dorado didn't do much for me.

bajabass - 12-13-2009 at 05:21 PM

Great pictures Bill! The blood washes off, the fillets last for days!!

bajabass - 12-13-2009 at 05:31 PM

Go home and get some scars on all that new tackle Russ. We want the pictures. How about a rooster with one of those great sunrise backgrounds? I love swimbaits for non toothy critters. Seems all the fish on the east side have wicked teeth. You go through a lot of them, and they ain't cheap! One bonito, cuda, trigger, ect., their done. The last time I was in San Bruno, I went through dozens per day, but only lost a couple hard lures to big fish/rocks. If I lived down there I would have no beer money if I fished plastics all the time. Plugs and spoons make sense to me.

2 1/2 ounce, inshore over the rocks. That's the size I use the most. Sometimes, with 10-12 lb line, I use the 1 1/2 ounce.

I deeper water, throwing to bonito, barrilete, dorado, I use the 3 1/2 ounce. Got a little tuna this fall on one too.

I've used the biggest (7 ounce?) yo-yoing with some success with yellowtail.

I caught a nice jack, a golden jack (I think) this morning with one off the Loreto marina.

In September, I found virtually none in San Diego. The P-Line knock-offs are similar, but come in even ounce sizes. Either too big or too small.

classicbajabronco - 1-2-2010 at 04:48 PM

When everything else doesn't work, try a little tnt. works everytime!

Bill...All those fish from Loreto area, or are you sneaking down the cape a little ways?

The Best Lure Backup!!

bombero - 1-3-2010 at 07:34 AM

I always have onboard my boat a backup "Bait" that assures I never return without dinner. Its the Best Proven, Never Fails, Easy to use, Works for all species of fish and never goes bad when left in the boat. No getting up in the dark to catch and needs no bait tank. I call it Pesobait Stash a handful of pesos somewhere dry in your boat, When all else fails, seek a local panga on the way back and "presto" fresh fish!

Russ - 1-3-2010 at 08:11 AM

One slight problem with the "pesolure", and maybe you have experience this. Where the hell is that secret stash when you need it?

I was taught by someone to never take a camera on a fishing trip. It limits the fish stories.
