Cabo Pulmo Trouble?

danl - 12-27-2009 at 01:31 PM

Had a nice afternoon on the beach at Cabo Pulmo, south of Los Barilles. On the way back, on the hill just north of town, ran into 30 or more guys on foot at the top of the pass with clubs, bats, machetes, molotov c-cktails, and at least one real-looking pistol. Some of them were headed in a line down toward the north end of town. Seemed friendly enough towards us, but it definitely got our attention. Looked like a road block as we were approaching the top, but no one tried to stop us.

Met lots of policemen headed that way as we went back to Los Barilles.

Anyone know that it might have meant? We had noticed on our way in that there were some serious looking guys camped in tents at the north end of town. Seemed strange at the time, but I don't really know if it's connected.

noproblemo2 - 12-27-2009 at 01:42 PM

Being so close to Cabo one can only imagine the possibilities of what you saw, but I would use some caution for a while. Seems a very likely potential new "hotspot" for the bad guys.

Sounds more like a dispute that has boiled over. Land...labor...who knows.
The other bad guys quit using clubs a long time ago although the molotov would get my attention. These guys are definitly peeed off at somebody.
Steer clear, danl, till you know what's up.

Santiago - 12-27-2009 at 02:20 PM

Didn't ESL (Choppy) have a beef with the Castros on Cabo Pulmo land? Sometime ago but might be related.

Mexicorn - 12-27-2009 at 02:33 PM

Some one tell me why we should even give this guy any play? One post newbie?
Chicken little said; Natives are up in arms and the sky is falling in CABO!!! One if by land two if by sea.... Nice try Majorie Drake go back to swimming with your brown Twinkies up at san Antonio del mar.

You kinda beat me to it. I was trying to figure out the logistics. North of what town?

Osprey - 12-27-2009 at 03:15 PM

There has been a serious land/grab dispute at Cabo Pulmo for some time now with dustups that followed just what the man saw. I don't know the exact land (it's a strip right on the beach east of town I believe) or the players but I'll try to find out and give you a report. More than once there have been professional armed land squatters hired to protect land rights assertions and when the OTHER OWNERS or THE POLICE SHOW UP it would sure be worth some Utube footage. Been some gunplay too.

Timo1 - 12-27-2009 at 03:21 PM

Another fine welcome to a first-time poster
Nice work
DanL.....Don't let this bunch get you down
Welcome aboard

danl - 12-27-2009 at 03:51 PM

Well I wasn't really too worried for my safety as they smiled and waved at us, but it really made us all very curious. I wanted to stop and ask them what it was about, but my family was not in favor of that :-) My 15 year old and his 22 year old brother were in the bed of the pickup. They just smiled and waved at the guys.

These guys didn't really look like thugs, but you would wonder how you could get so many guys together in such a remote place. Also, I couldn't think of any good reason for them to be there, with everyone carrying some type of weapon. And the guys camped down near the beach definitely seemed out of place.

We talked with a local in a car on the way out and she assured us the situation was not a threat to tourists, although I couldn't get from her what was actually going on.

I'm in an RV at Los Barilles, which seems like a good distance, so I really have no worries. Just very curious. Loving my first trip to a non-resort Mexico. Honestly, the wind here is bothering me more than what we saw at Cabo Pulmo. Wish the weather was warmer! Although it's much better than where I came from!

So don't start calling me names! I registered so I could post this and try to satisfy my curiosity about what I saw :-) No evil intent! Promise! I love you all! And Baja! Peace!

noproblemo2 - 12-27-2009 at 04:03 PM

Forgive the grumps here, they enjoy creating chaos at times, you'll quickly learn which ones for yourself. Ignore them and continue posting any updates. Caution seems to be a way of life anywhere now-a-days.

Welcome to BajaNomad. danl, and thanks for the info.
Don't let Mixicorn be your memory of this place. He's an experiment that Doug agreed to.
Corny lives in a mental ward in the V.A... and is allowed to spew nonsense as a method of understanding for his therapists to have something to work with.
Normally here, he's a pretty good guy but, it just happens that he makes no sense and should be ignored sometimes.
This may be one of those times.

Tell us about the "Not very nice" stuff. We all want to know.
You're starting to get into the attack zone and I want to prepare myself.
Don't disappear on this issue, please. I deserve to know of what you speak. Since you brought it here, we all do.
Lets hear it.

Mexicorn - 12-27-2009 at 04:34 PM

Cant remember it all it from one of her posts back in June or July, just Google it like I did. It has comments about where you live in PB and other things that appear to be complete BS. She goes back and forth with this person she refers to as Fulano and the two pussys take pot shots at you personally and other expats living in PB.
No offense I'm on your side buddy- Dont get your feathers all ruffled up! I'm standing up for you!
The thought of putting all that BS on the internet seems like a Chicken ship personal attack.

Thats all check it out.

I do. All of it. Why not? She gave me the unusual opportunity to accept what she said and laugh at it simultaneously. For someone of her varied credibility here, that's something.

As far as Fulano is concerned...if you don't know who she is here, and there, you have some homework to do.
Start now.

Mexicorn - 12-27-2009 at 04:57 PM

Lets team up send me a U2U and well get started.
Mest thinkst weve got alot in common Plus my therapist at the VA said it would be good for me.

Skeet/Loreto - 12-27-2009 at 05:37 PM

What the heck are you guys talking About.

I still remember Cabo Pulmo, the small airstrip next to the water. I would land my little Cessna !70B get diving Gear and head for the reef, where I would take photos of Transparent Fish on the Coral Reef.

Sleep overnite in my plane and then do it again the next Day !!

And here you guys are talking about a Group of Guys on the Beach looking for trouble//

Things change!

Skeet

Ohhh Skeet....That's down at Pompano's house. Those guys just won't act their age like we do up here. I guess it's because we're so much closer to God being as north as we are.
Those sinfull southern folk. Forgive them, Skeet. Pray for them.

bajajudy - 12-27-2009 at 05:57 PM

It is a land dispute that has been going on for some time and has gotten ugly before.

I have to admit...after your Greek spelling of my name, I've clamped up my mid-section and taken vigilance as to who approaches from the rear, and don't think I don't know what you look like. Not every old Texan wears Raspberry lipstick like you.

Tick.. Tick.... Tick...

Watch out before he unleashes, "THE WRATH OF DENNIS" upon.
Or opens a can of PB Whoopass on you.... FULANO IS THAT YOU?

Mexicorn - a fact is a fact, regardless of whether or not someone has a long list of former posts. What's one got to do with another? Stop attacking people on such a feckless basis. Information (facts) will come from anyone who happens to experience it - and it won't necessarily be someone who has been a longtime poster on this forum. I know a whole group of very very experienced Baja travelers, and none of them post on this forum. This forum is not a be-all, end-all Baja intelligence site. I think some people have an exaggerated sense of self-importance.

David K - 12-28-2009 at 09:17 AM

Maybe there needs to be a seperate forum called 'Punta Banda Drama' or maybe 'Baja Norte Drama' so Rosarito and San Antonio Del Mar can be included...?

Seriously, what is this mob doing at Cabo Pulmo? Any official or news clips down that way, Jesse?

Perhaps those of us who knew personally or read posts by ESL/ Chopy/ Cornell Crawford and his fight to get the squatters off his land at Cabo Pulmo are the most interested in hearing?

Like Skeet, I haven't been back to Cabo Pulmo in ages... since 1974. Then, it was just a rancho, white beach with cholla cactus, and clear water.

Not sure if dnl is still checking this thread, but when I went to Cabo Pulmo the last time (it was either 2008 or 2007) I saw some "security" people camping in the middle of nowhere. They weren't that many of them, but it looked like there are group of 2-4 at each post.

I was told that they are hired by developers and stay there to discourage locals and visitors who may trespass. Maybe you saw these people reporting to their posts or they might be locals who were headed to confront those people?

I Googled that blog and Fulano. Now I finally understand the constant animus towards her. Check out this guote:

Fulano said...
Everybody who is an unknown on BajaNomads is 'Fulano'. They are lashing out and turning on each other in frustration.

Years ago there was a "Twilight Zone" episode where the aliens came to conquer the Earth. What they did was land on a hill outside of town and turn off all the power to one-half of the town. The people without power became suspicious of the people on the other side of town that still had power. The suspicions grew and grew and the people in the dark became more and more enraged. The side that still had power armed itself to protect themselves from the people of the dark side. Then the aliens turned the power back on on the dark side of town and turned the power off on the other side.

As the episode ends, the entire town is in a riot killing each other and the aliens are sitting up on the hill commenting how easy it is to conquer the Earth.

That in a nutshell is the "brain trust" over at BajaNomads. Dennis is the town's mayor.

She has you guys dead on. Fulano is my new hero/heroine.

Your description of security people seems to fit, with locals or some other bunch headed to confront them. We noticed some kind of out of place men camped a way back from the beach, right by the road.
