Hiway 1 to Asuncion to Abreojos to Hiway 1

mojo_norte - 1-11-2010 at 10:46 AM

Thinking of the circuit Hiway 1 - Asuncion - Abreojos - Hiway 1.

Can someone tell me the approximate mileage and road condition? I'm up on the road from the Highway to Asuncion- how is the rest of the trip?

Is the coast section worthwhile?
Objective is scenery, camping and maybe a little surfing and fishing.

DianaT - 1-11-2010 at 11:02 AM

These are approximates---but close. We don't do the exact to the foot measurements.

From highway 1 to the turnoff to Asuncion it is about 45 miles. All paved, but some really nasty areas of potholes.

Turn-off to Asuncion is about 26 +/- miles. Most of it is paved now, some bad spots where the storm damaged the first part of the road, but just be watchful. Last 8 +/- miles are dirt, and it depends on when the road grader has been through.

This part takes you through really open desert areas that we love.

Asuncion to Abreojos is 60+/- miles. To San Hipolito it is usually very good and then can become a real washboard. But, in the areas where you can drive on the salt flats, it is smooth as anything.

The road from Abreojos to Highway 1 is mostly paved---I think it is about only 5 miles of dirt.

Worth it? We love it. You will find some of the most isolated coast areas that are just beautiful. There can be surfing near Asuncion at Punta Choros and fishing all the way down --- lots of isolated camping spots. Just a beautiful area

Of course there should be surfing at Abreojos and then Campo Rene is well worth a visit.

But one person to whom we gave this information, hated the drive.

I would post a bunch of pictures of that coast line, but better you see it in person if you go.

a group of 8 bikers just set out from here to take that route....gorgeous scenery if you hug the shoreline...there are several options for little roads and we especially like the piece from San Hipolito-Pta.Prieta along the beach...enjoy...and stop in and eat lunch with Tita & Bimbo in San Hipolito next to the boat launch area...ask anyone.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 11:21 AM

Both are correct except it is more like 65 miles to Abreojos. Sorry Diane, couldn't resist. I would post years of pictures, but you should really see it for yourself!

mojo_norte - 1-11-2010 at 11:25 AM

Thanks!- mileage from Abreojos - to the next Pemex - San Ignacio? maybe 90 miles? I'm trying to determine if my F150 with dual tanks can make it.

shari - 1-11-2010 at 11:42 AM

and there is an awesome 12' swell going off here today...tomorrow still 11' too...lots of surf these days and lobster...pick up a dozen oysters from the coop in La Bocana too.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 11:45 AM

next Pemex is in San Ignacio or Vizcaino, although are places in La Bocana and Abreojos to buy gas if necessary. mileage about 75-80 miles to San Ignacio

Well close---but it is 62 miles from Campo Rene to the Pemex in San Ignacio and about 5 miles from Campo Rene to Abreojos, so that is less than 70 miles from Abreojos to Pemex in San Ignacio.:lol::lol:

My extensive number of photos are to follow, so we can see who has the best and most, but Thai food is waiting for me.

mojo_norte---if you love deserted beaches, go for it. The turn off to Abreojos is before the town of Bahia Asuncion, but do drive into Bahia Asuncion. Also there is a gas pump there where you can top off if you want. Do be sure to drive into Punta Prieta and San Hipolito---nice places.

HAVE FUN and ignore RTS and myself.

There is a guy in La Bocana who sells gas.

Sunman - 1-11-2010 at 02:21 PM

This is a great drive, you will enjoy it. Gas should not be an issue in your F-150 but as others have said you can find it if need be.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 02:40 PM

5 miles my pituty. I have extensive logs and it is more like 11.3 miles. excuse me mojo. You will love it. Do go into Asuncion.

When are you planning your trip.

Now, exactly where did you begin your measurement? From the entrance to town from the main road or from the salt flat road? Or perhaps from downtown at the malecon?

And where did you end your measurement---at the turn off to Campo Rene, or the restaurant there. And if you were riding your quad while making these measurements, were you driving in a straight line?

Sorry, but it is my job to make sure you are giving absolutely, minutely, the EXACT information---the real truth.

Mojo, yes, when are you going? Your truck with duel tanks will be no problem---

I love deserted beaches and Oysters so I'm going ! 1st week February. I will definitely stop in Asuncion and have lunch and stay awhile if it suits me. I have a month total to 'kill' :tumble:
Thanks all - love Mojo

If we are there---stop by and say hello.

Also, if you do stay in Asuncion, you might want to drive out to San Roque---beautiful place to camp---semi abandoned and no services like restaurants or such---9 miles +/- good dirt road. Quickly, you will see why it is the favorite of so many.

The road to San Roque is close to the entrance to town, right along side the Delegation and Police station.

Oh, there are more very deserted beaches along the road to San Roque---

Sounds like you will have a great time.

We have a race in LA BAy the 6th of Feb and another one in Bahia Tortugas on the 21 of Feb. Otherwise we will be home. Stop by. Ask Martin at the tire store where Ralph lives.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 04:04 PM

You are just picking on me because I support the freedom to measure from where you want. If you really cared you would never have questioned me from the beginning.

Now. Mojo.... Mileage is approximate but you should make it easily. Do top off in Asuncion so as not to have to worry. You never know about the next station.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Mojo---there are times the Pemex in San Ignacio can run out of gas---usually not for long. So if you are staying there and they are open, fill up and don't wait until later or the morning.

Drive straight through town over the little hill and we are the yellow house at the bottom of the hill---can't miss it.

There is a water store by the gas pump in town, but I have not seen people using hoses to fill campers, etc.---just bottles, but they will help you with something.

Curt63 - 1-11-2010 at 05:42 PM

The drive is amazing.

Ralph, Are the salt flats firm or slippery under the crust?

They just had a lot of rain and some flats are slick ad greasy under the dry crust .. be careful.

pics coming soon.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 05:44 PM

some wet and some dry. Like you said there has been some rain and some very high tides

In my web site, from our July, 2007 trip http://vivabaja.com/707

Hwy. 1 at Vizcaino to Asuncion, then along the coast to Abreojos then back to Hwy. 1 near San Ignacio: (note: the only non paved portion now is the road between Asuncion and Abreojos... and a few miles going into Asuncion from Vizacaino.)

VIZCAINO PENINSULA ROAD LOG
Some notes collected on the drive out to Asuncion and on south along the Vizcaino coast...

0.0 (0 hrs.) Vizcaino on Hwy. 1. Go west on Bahia Tortugas highway

11.4 Rancho San Francisquito road

46.6 (45 min.) Bahia Asuncion JCN. (turn south/ left). Graded dirt road west/ straight to Tortugas.

Road left is newly paved towards Asuncion, traffic is detoured onto parallel dirt road.

54.0 End of new black top, work continues.

73.3 (1 hr. 45 min.) after passing through the town of Asuncion, we arrive at the Blowhole Bed & Breakfast (Juan & Shari's home).

The road to San Roque leaves Bahia Asuncion on Curvina Street (next to the police station) and is an easy 7.8 mile drive.

TO SAN IGNACIO, via Punta Abreojos

0.0 (0 hrs.) Bahia Asuncion at the San Roque road (Curvina Street/ Police station)

4.2 JCN. Main road back to Hwy. 1 at Vizcaino to left, we continue straight ahead parallel to the coast.

21.2 Punta Prieta fishing village

26.5 San Hipolito fishing village

51.9 (2 hrs.) La Bocana, town with paved main street.

62.5 (2 hrs.15 min.) Punta Abreojos, large town with paved main street (we drive around a bit looking around before heading out)

71.9 Campo Rene road (Rene is 2.8 miles east)

76.0 New Pavement!

115.9 (3 hrs.15 min. driving time) Hwy. 1. JCN. San Ignacio is 15.2 miles east.

Photos at http://vivabaja.com/707 and here on Nomad back in 2007 in the trip reports forum

David K - 1-11-2010 at 06:42 PM

Oh, and I have it as 12.2 miles from 'downtown Abreojos' to Campo Rene restaurant... but I may be off up to a mile as we made a couple loops in town looking for Fishin' Rich and Whistler! ;)

DianaT - 1-11-2010 at 07:19 PM

Being the anal retentive person you are, I am surprised you have not updated your outdated information.

rts551 - 1-11-2010 at 07:22 PM

Agreed.. I think Diane had it correct that the pavement is within 5 mile of Abreojos now.

David K - 1-11-2010 at 08:47 PM

Did either of you read the first lines, above the roadlog?:

In my web site, from our July, 2007 trip http://vivabaja.com/707

:o

The pavement will end where it ends... 5 miles from town, in town or elsewhere... I dodn't think it will change his plans, or the mileages (which is wat he was asking about).

Typing so fast and upset that you can't edit? Or are dodn't and wat new words?:lol::lol:

Your information about the road out to Bahia Asuncion is also very outdated.

But you tried. That is what is important. Good Job

So, these mileages are not any good anymore, with the exception of the pavement comments?

0.0 (0 hrs.) Vizcaino on Hwy. 1. Go west on Bahia Tortugas highway

11.4 Rancho San Francisquito road

46.6 (45 min.) Bahia Asuncion JCN. (turn south/ left). Graded dirt road west/ straight to Tortugas.

Boy, got me on that one---the existence and condition of pavement makes no difference.

Good one DK---Good Job---You get your gold star for the day.:lol::lol:

Curt63 - 1-11-2010 at 10:16 PM

Mojo, be sure to put piece of tape over your odometer. Its so beautiful you won't want to be reminded of this thread.

Whatever the exact mileages are, its super easy and beautiful. You almost cant get lost, but you could get stuck in the soft stuff.

Enjoy

Curt63 - 1-12-2010 at 10:26 PM

Here's the gas station in La Bocana. Full service with diesel too. If they're closed, just start asking around.
