BajaNomad

Crossing March 16 (Tecate or TJ) and heading So.

DeMinimis - 2-23-2010 at 02:13 PM

Would like to try Tecate this time. Doesn't really matter I suppose. If wanting to caravan and you can keep up with the wonder that is the Duramax  shout out. Probably pushing to GN on day-one. La Ventana day two. Early mornings, no night driving. Pretty much all business driving down this time with the slow beach-hopping drive saved for the return.

DeMinimis - 3-1-2010 at 02:25 PM

I'll will have showered.

DeMinimis - 3-8-2010 at 06:02 PM

Going to cross at TJ, as it turns out. I'm not wanted by the authorities. No takers? Its the fear of the mighty Duramax, isn't it. Wife doesn't want to hit La Ventanna, so will end at Conception or Loreto. Heck, even if you just want to caravan through Ensenada, that would be cool.

bajafam - 3-8-2010 at 08:25 PM

Bummer. We aren't heading down until the 20th :( maybe next time! Have a wonderful trip!

DeMinimis - 3-8-2010 at 08:58 PM

Next time for sure.

BAJACAT - 3-9-2010 at 08:15 PM

Bajafam, Im heading out on the 20th, I will try to make all the way to Bahia Concepcion in one day..Im in the San Diego area (CA)...

DeMinimis have a good and safe trip

bajafam - 3-9-2010 at 08:37 PM

BAJACAT ~ as much as I would love to say we could do the same, I know better :) We are traveling with two small children and let's just say, we need a break after a while! We will leave either San Diego or Yuma, on the 20th, but we are only going as far as La Fonda for the first leg...the obligatory day at the beach and Sunday Brunch for the kids (yeah, the kids :) ) then we head to El Rosario, then GN for whales and then south from there to destinations yet to be planned :) Lionel wants to make it as far as Todos Santos to look at some property, but he wanted to do that last trip too, and we only got as far as Abreojos. Oh well, that's the best part about Baja vacations...you never know where you'll end up, but it's ALL good!

Safe travels to everyone! Maybe we'll all bump into each other along the way!

BAJACAT - 3-9-2010 at 08:42 PM

Hey we are going to Guerrero Negro to se the whales too, Shari(a BajaNomad) at Bahia concepcion will set it up for me.My kids are older now (10<11<18), so i think I can make it in one day.

bajafam - 3-9-2010 at 10:14 PM

Cool!! We just made our reservations at Malarrimo. 8 am March 23! Yippee! Do you mean Shari in Asuncion? Or another Shari? Cause Shari in Asuncion is the best! We are planning to stay a few days in her "Abuela's Casa" in San Roque on the trip back. Stayed there last year and it was awesome!!!

Oh, your kids are quite a bit older :) Ours are 4 and 1 1/2, so we can only do so much long winded road tripping. But they are awesome in the car! Good Luck and have fun!!

(sorry to have kind of high-jacked the thread!)

bajafam - 3-10-2010 at 08:45 AM

DeMinimis ~ maybe we should all meet up in Asuncion with Shari for a Nomad party!!

BAJACAT ~ when do you plan to return home? We'll be in Asuncion/San Roque March 31/April 1.

DeMinimis - 3-10-2010 at 10:43 AM

Sounds like a good possibility. We have to cross back no later than the 27th. Need to visit friends up the east on the 25th. If there's a date that works for everyone, we're game.

DeMinimis - 3-10-2010 at 12:36 PM

Didn't see the posts above. Looks like we'll be north of you guys by the time you are at Asuncion. Well, if you see us on Mex 1 heading north before we turn off to Gonzaga, etc., shout out!

BAJACAT - 3-11-2010 at 07:14 AM

Im coming back on the 27th guys...

bajafam - 3-11-2010 at 08:55 AM

BOO! Looks like we will have to meet on another journey....as my husband always says, we are just getting the timing right!

Bien Viaje!!

DeMinimis - 3-11-2010 at 09:26 AM

Bajacat,

We'll try and stop by while you are there. Guess you know what we'll be look'n like:

BAJACAT - 3-11-2010 at 08:27 PM

DeMinimis that sounds good will be looking 4 you too,
BajaFam, that means no trip?

DeMinimis - 3-12-2010 at 12:59 PM

Bajacat,

Not clear, but are you still heading all the way to Conception on the 20th or are you stopping for the whales on the way down?

We'll occasionally be on ch 13 if you have an old school CB.

Two kids and a dog here (7/10). The dog is the best behaved out of the bunch.

bajafam - 3-12-2010 at 06:16 PM

Oh goodness, no! We will be heading down the 20th at the latest, but Lionel is trying to work out an extra day, which would mean we would be crossing on the 18th...GN on the 22nd...whales on the 23rd...then south for a few days (destination unknown :) ) then back to Asuncion around the 31st and back home by the 7th. Maybe we could do Asuncion after GN...hmmm...that whole part of the trip is still up in the air. But we will be posting on our travel blog @

http://thefamvangurp.blogspot.com

and probably here as well along the way. I know that many of the places we will be staying have internet access. Boy, have times changed, huh?! The first family trip we made we were actually reported to the authorities as missing because no one could get a hold of us!

We would love to meet fellow Nomads IRL. At any rate,

Disfrute del viaje!

Cat-you're going to need more than one day in BA....seriously, it's not really worth the drive for only one day. Have a great trip and who knows....maybe our paths will cross.

[Edited on 3-13-2010 by Bajaboy]

woody with a view - 3-13-2010 at 08:14 AM

i was thinking the same. that's alot of driving.

i hate driving!

BAJACAT - 3-13-2010 at 09:38 AM

Maybe i can leave on the 24th. how far is BA from Concepcion bay..In how manny hrs Can I make this trip..

bajafam - 3-13-2010 at 09:52 AM

BAJACAT ~ according to an atlas I found...

Concepcion to Mulege ~ 30 miles
Mulege to San Ignacio ~ 82.9 miles
San Ignacio to Vizcaino turnoff ~ 33.4 miles
Vizcaino to Asuncion ~ 66 miles
For a total of 212.3 miles. I would give it, bare minimum 5 hours.

ITA with bajaboy. Asuncion is worthy of more than a stop off, and it is a drive to get there, not really just a place to pass through.

David K - 3-13-2010 at 09:53 AM

We went from Bahia Asuncion to Bahia Concepcion in one long day, but that was via the dirt coastal route through Abreojos, and a visit to San Ignacio.

Using the paved roads, it is probably a 4-5 hour drive 200-250 miles...

Great job with details!!! I was just guessing... thanks for your research... BajaCat is a great Nomad!

bajafam - 3-13-2010 at 10:06 AM

Thanks DK, I finally found the atlas book that I was looking for the last time I posted asking for mileage. It is pretty detailed and thus far, accurate. We bought in in the Viejo Cactus gift shop in Malarrimo last year and it has been more than helpful. Prior to that, we were pretty much winging it ~ which led us down many a dead end road :) Not to say that doesn't still happen...I think my husband does it on purpose...the neverending quest to find that one perfect spot :) I don't mind...it's all part of the adventure!

The atlas is the "Peninsula de Baja California Road & Recreation Atlas 2007" published by www.esparzaeditiores.com.mx

Are you familiar with this one?

More to consider than mileage

DianaT - 3-13-2010 at 10:07 AM

While it is only about 70 miles mas or menos, with the condition of the Vizcaino-Tortugas road right now, it is taking us about 2 hours to get from Vizcaino to Asuncion.

So do take that into consideration. I hope the weather will be nice for you as this is not the best time of year for Bahia Asuncion----but then again, it has been a crazy weather year.

Have fun

bajafam - 3-13-2010 at 10:12 AM

Yep, nothing like a 5 hour trip that takes 8! That is usually the case for us, no matter where or when we travel :) So, we try not to schedule or plan for anything but settling in on the days when we are driving any distance over 100 miles. Besides, even if the road is in awesome shape, you never know what else will happen....gotta stop at that roadside stand, or that taqueria, or pee every few minutes, or, the classic, hey what's down that dirt road? We never get ANYWHERE fast!!

If anyone is interested...the atlas we picked up at Malarrimo is also available here ~
mexicomaps.com

This is what it looks like:

Does anyone else have this puppy? We love it!

if all you have is 1 week, i would choose one location and stay there all week.

BAJACAT - 3-13-2010 at 09:00 PM

I have been in Concepcion before so I only need a few days, to stay there I don't mind the long drives. so this trip to Asuncion is a must If Ineed to take and extra day from Concepcion and be at BA for 3days

DeMinimis - 3-15-2010 at 09:24 AM

BC, if you run into us at Conception, plan accordingly. You probably wont feel well enough to drive until mid afternoon the following day. Then, it's too late to leave and the cycle repeats. Fair warning.

Well, in Dan Bernardino waiting for the 64 gal tank install. Will snag our cards tonight and will be enjoying shrimp manana.

Kirk out

I know I just thought it was funny, "BEAM ME UP SCOTTY"..:lol:

DeMinimis - 3-15-2010 at 09:48 PM

Have Big tank -Will travel. I'm so far over gross vehicle weight with this 56 gal water tank and this 64 gal fuel tank, I don't even want to think about it.

I'll say one thing, the Border Station parking lot isn't what it once was. What a hole.

bajafam - 3-15-2010 at 10:04 PM

It's getting closer to lift off!!! Hope you guys have a great trip :)

BAJACAT - 3-16-2010 at 06:32 PM
