Mexicali-San Felipe road since quake

tunaeater - 4-4-2010 at 08:25 PM

I heard reports that the road from Mexicali to San Felipe was damaged is some sections. Does anybody have a report or any reliable information? We are planning to go tomorrow mid morning.

Thanks

Paul

Click on the KFI 640 (LA radio station) web site:

Latest on-air news report states currently no power or gasoline available in Mexicali. Unknown about San Felipe, however lack of info from them at this time (8:30PM) may be one indication

They do not have the road information you are looking for yet, but they said that as of 8 pm tonight, the border was closed to vehicles.

I cannot imagine that will last long---too many families separated when the border closes.

If anyone has travel info from US to San Felipe please post. We're also heading down in the AM.

No problems with power in San Felipe (it didn't go off) and minimal damage.

Tony at the Net is reporting the road is closed at La Ventana with traffic returning to San Felipe, earlier reports said it was passable via a flooded wash. Mexicali roads are reportedly a mess, don't go near there.

So if the road does re-open in the morning (probably via that wash), expect extremely heavy northbound traffic weaving all over the road to avoid cracks.

we left san felipe yesterday to go to san diego, we were in belmont park and felt he quake. wanna go home to sf tomorrow. any luck?

Gov. Millan of Baja has declared a state of emergency in Mexicali and ordered residents to remain at home. Power is out in most areas, so few gas stations can pump gas. The road from Mexicali to San Felipe is closed due to damage. The port of entry at Calexico is currently closed due to loose and falling plaster. Schools are closed tomorrow. The road from Mexicali to TJ is closed due to damage. There is a report that flood control dikes along the Colorado have been damaged. If that isn't enough, it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

And the third day he rose again...

Sur2baja - 4-5-2010 at 05:28 AM

Good morning...any road reports?

Sur2baja - 4-5-2010 at 06:34 AM

As of 0630, Calexico East crossing is open to commercial and passenger vehicles. Pedestrian crossing still closed. Baja News is posting a lot of informative damage reports but still no road reports though.

tunaeater - 4-5-2010 at 07:05 AM

I heard the road is open from Mexicali to San Felipe. We will have to cross at the East port. We plan on leaving in a few hours...

nbacc - 4-5-2010 at 07:12 AM

Be careful in Mexicali....no elect or gas sounds scarey.

Here are a few key telephone numbers in Mexicali for people who will be travelling through the city on Monday:

Mexicali Tourist office (011-52)-(686) 566-1277.
Conventions and Tourism bureau (686)-551-9800 (in Mexicali) or (686)-577-2300 (in San Felipe).
San Felipe police department (686) 577-1134
San Felipe Fire Department (has road conditions) (686) 577-1882
San Felipe Mayor's Office: (686) 577-1021

As of Apr 04; 9 p.m.: The Mexicali Road is closed at La Ventana and traffic north is being turned back to San Felipe. No word on whether the Ensenada Road is also closed but that would be the only other possible route for people returning to California or the border region. (11:30 p.m. update: I hear that construction equipment from the road upgrade project around the Ensenada Road junction is already being used to clear the path at La Ventana.)

Sur2baja - 4-5-2010 at 07:15 AM

We always top off at the USA gas station before we use the east crossing. We're going to leave Fallbrook in about an hour. So much for our usual 0400 start!

A very strong earthquake hit Baja California, about 19 miles south of Mexicali this afternoon

Mexicali to San Felipe?

redgecko1 - 4-5-2010 at 04:10 PM

Besides the road work being done north of San Felipe. Does anyone know of any major damage from the earthquakes to the road from Mexicali to San Felipe that would prevent a baja trip? I'm leaving on the 23rd.

bonanza bucko - 4-5-2010 at 04:23 PM

I've heard today that the road is open but you have to be careful of cracks in other faults in the road. The road was closed this morning at La Ventana due to the quake...fixed by now.

We are leaving Gonzaga Bay in the morning for San Diego...we'll skip Mexicali and go up Mex 3 to Ensenada and the Tecate. We've heard there is no damage there.

The west gates at Calexico are closed...have been all day. The East gate has a pretty long delay but it's open.

By the 23rd there should be no problema at all.

Tunaeater left this morning from El Centro for San Felipe thru the Mexicali east gate. Hopefully he will provide a hwy report.

redgecko1 - 4-5-2010 at 07:16 PM

Thanks for the news BB. When tunaeater gets back that would be great to get a report to see what is open, and everything is good to go.

Talked to a guy that came down to Gonzaga ,Monday, thru Mexicali.
At 7 AM,when he crossed,West entry was closed, both ways.East entry had no problems both ways.
Road to Gonzaga...usual stuff

Donjulio - 4-6-2010 at 07:43 AM

Business as usual in San Felipe. Highway 5 is open and normal traffic including trucks and buses are getting through. A few broken windows in town. Nothing major.

redgecko1 - 4-6-2010 at 08:07 AM

Good to hear.... funny I was expecting damage like large fissures in the road on the salt flats... From the sounds of it, everything is coming back online (at least for the 23rd for me)

Donjulio - 4-6-2010 at 08:29 AM

There are large fissures and huge cracks in the road. But you know Mexico. That doesnt stop anything. For them its just another obstacle to go around. Thats why I love this place. I just had some great photos sent to me. I will send them to David K and maybe he can post them.

Well great. I´m in BOLA and will be driving up Mex 5 to get home in a few days. Hope they get the road fixed before then. Otherwise, it´s all just another Baja adventure.

bajahorselover - 4-9-2010 at 04:18 PM

I made the drive to San Felipe from Los Angeles on Wednesday. I came across at the east border in order to bypass downtown Mexicali and any possible delays. The drive all the way to San Felipe was easy-peasy....no problems whatsoever.....the road conditions just south of Mexicali, at ground zero were no worse than the road was many years ago.

bigmike - 4-9-2010 at 09:25 PM

I am leaving Ensenada on Monday and driving to Tecate and taking the toll road toward Mexicali, then taking 5 south to hook up with the new road going to Puerto Penansco, does anyone know if there are any problems with the roads in going thay way?
Thanks for your help!

bajalou - 4-10-2010 at 07:15 AM

Went that route on Wed. in the other direction, San Felipe, Mexicali Toll road, Tecate and no problems at all.

Sur2baja - 4-10-2010 at 08:11 AM

We left San Felipe yesterday, crossed at the East Crossing in 31 minutes at about 4:00 P.M. There is road damage but very passable. There is a relief center in La Puerta. We dropped off our left over water and food from the trip. I wish we had more to give. If any of you are going down it is on the west side of the highway next to the fire station. They can take the usual relief supplies. I'm sure shovels, gloves, boots and 5 gallon buckets would be a great thing also.
