I heard reports that the road from Mexicali to San Felipe was damaged is some sections. Does anybody have a report or any reliable information? We are
planning to go tomorrow mid morning.
Latest on-air news report states currently no power or gasoline available in Mexicali. Unknown about San Felipe, however lack of info from them at
this time (8:30PM) may be one indication
No problems with power in San Felipe (it didn't go off) and minimal damage.
Tony at the Net is reporting the road is closed at La Ventana with traffic returning to San Felipe, earlier reports said it was passable via a flooded
wash. Mexicali roads are reportedly a mess, don't go near there.
So if the road does re-open in the morning (probably via that wash), expect extremely heavy northbound traffic weaving all over the road to avoid
cracks.
Gov. Millan of Baja has declared a state of emergency in Mexicali and ordered residents to remain at home. Power is out in most areas, so few gas
stations can pump gas. The road from Mexicali to San Felipe is closed due to damage. The port of entry at Calexico is currently closed due to loose
and falling plaster. Schools are closed tomorrow. The road from Mexicali to TJ is closed due to damage. There is a report that flood control dikes
along the Colorado have been damaged. If that isn't enough, it's supposed to rain tomorrow.
As of 0630, Calexico East crossing is open to commercial and passenger vehicles. Pedestrian crossing still closed. Baja News is posting a lot of
informative damage reports but still no road reports though.
Here are a few key telephone numbers in Mexicali for people who will be travelling through the city on Monday:

Conventions and Tourism bureau (686)-551-9800 (in Mexicali) or (686)-577-2300 (in San Felipe).
San Felipe police department (686) 577-1134
San Felipe Fire Department (has road conditions) (686) 577-1882
San Felipe Mayor's Office: (686) 577-1021
As of Apr 04; 9 p.m.: The Mexicali Road is closed at La Ventana and traffic north is being turned back to San Felipe. No word on whether the Ensenada
Road is also closed but that would be the only other possible route for people returning to California or the border region. (11:30 p.m. update: I
hear that construction equipment from the road upgrade project around the Ensenada Road junction is already being used to clear the path at La
Ventana.)
We always top off at the USA gas station before we use the east crossing. We're going to leave Fallbrook in about an hour. So much for our usual
0400 start!

A very strong earthquake hit Baja California, about 19 miles south of Mexicali this afternoon
Besides the road work being done north of San Felipe. Does anyone know of any major damage from the earthquakes to the road from Mexicali to San
Felipe that would prevent a baja trip? I'm leaving on the 23rd.
I've heard today that the road is open but you have to be careful of cracks in other faults in the road. The road was closed this morning at La
Ventana due to the quake...fixed by now.
We are leaving Gonzaga Bay in the morning for San Diego...we'll skip Mexicali and go up Mex 3 to Ensenada and the Tecate. We've heard there is no
damage there.
The west gates at Calexico are closed...have been all day. The East gate has a pretty long delay but it's open.
By the 23rd there should be no problema at all.
