Missing elderly couple found safe in Tijuana

I rescued an elderly couple in their 80s whose 1987 Ford Bronco stalled on the dangerous windey upgrade just before you get to Coyote Beach. They were headed north. There was no safe place to pull off. I pulled in front of them and asked them what was the problem. They said they had bought gas in Loreto and it probably had water in it. This is possible, but it could have been a myriad of other causes. It was really an old beater.

They started in Cabo San Lucas the day before. They spoke no Spanish and did not carry a cell phone. They say they were headed for the border. They did not seem to know how far the border was from Coyote/Mulege. They had a tow bar attached to the front of the vehicle. (Not to self; there must have been a reason for that tow bar). I hitched them up and towed them to Coyote in front of the roadside convenience store an restaurant. They didn't appear to have much money and were facing the possibility of sleeping in their vehicle that was loaded with all their stuff. They didn't want to leave it.

It was Easter Sunday. Everything would be closed and I didn't have an idea what they were going to do. Even if they could get to Mulege, all the hotels were booked during Semana Santa. They didn't even realize it was Semana Santa.

I told the to stay put and I will go into Mulege and see if I can send a mechanic. Failing that, I would go to the Police station and ask them if they could help. Well, I went to Oscar, the mechanic who is at the beginning of the Ice House Road, just off the highway. He lives next door to the shop. He was home with his family. I told him of the elderly couple's plight. He said without hesitation, "Me voy!" He went there immediately with a flat bed trailer and hauled them and their vehicle back to his shop.

Later that night I was dining at Mele's (Doney's) restaurant. In walked the couple. Oscar had somehow gotten them a room at The Mulege Hotel, across the street. The woman who was with me on the trip from the airport in Loreto was also eating with me. We invited them to join us and told them how relieved to see that they had gotten this far. They, of course, expressed their appreciation.

I would sure like to know how the rest of their trip went and if they reached their home in Redding, CA. I gave them my card with my email and California phone. They are probable clueless about computers, but if they call my phone number it would be relayed to my email. They seemed so vulnerable.

Kudos to Oscar for being such a kind humanitarian.

I hope they made it OK.

I think they said something about when they drove the Bronco out of the U Haul they had no idea where they were. They could never find the U Haul again. Have there been any recent sightings?

What I meant was that I SAW IT, on the drive north from Cabo to Juncalito last year.I posted about it but it doesn't seem to be in that thread.It was Eastertime, in the weeds on the southbound side of the road.Right beside an accident that was not a pretty picture, on the shoulder.The U Haul looked dusty and abandoned,but when we drove back a week later, it was GONE!!(North of La Paz) Oh crap, I just got the part about the Bronco.OK Tony, ya got me ..

No, I didn't make it up. Now, the U Haul part was woven into this true story by others, but I couldn't rule out the possibility that this elderly couple could conceivably be the same couple. This is the desert, after all. They're out there...or maybe not.

All I know is that they were as real as any other people, or apparitions, that walk through my doors of perception.

Perhaps this might solve the U-Haul mystery . Just scroll down a little!
