Old Mill burned down

wadeinthewater - 4-18-2010 at 07:59 AM

Don Eddie’s restaurant burned down 3 a.m. this morning. Cause of fire not known. Rooms still available but restaurant & tackle shop gone. Old Mill restaurant should open again in 2-3 wks. Meanwhile El Jardins is the only restaurant until then.

BornFisher - 4-18-2010 at 08:06 AM

Whoa....... bummer! Hope no one got hurt!

capt. mike - 4-18-2010 at 08:41 AM

i think that was a fire trap waiting to happen.
too bad i really liked the architecture.

i would never stay at Don Eddies tho - he gives no courtesy to Lorenzo's guests.

wilderone - 4-18-2010 at 08:49 AM

oh man - won't be the same.

durrelllrobert - 4-18-2010 at 11:27 AM

As someone who worked in the commercial property and casualty insurance field for many years, we preferred to merely put quotes around the word lightning. It allowed the meaning to be discerned, but inasmuch as I was in both New York and LA, it provided a modicum of discretion. And I don't necessarily disagree.

If it's Don Eddie's that burned down why does the subject line say Old Mill?

noproblemo2 - 4-18-2010 at 01:35 PM

What a shame, the architecture of the place was really neat. Will he rebuild?

BAJACAT - 4-18-2010 at 02:12 PM

What a sympathetic response. I'm surprised your not trying to pimp a deal on the land yet.

jodiego - 4-18-2010 at 03:29 PM

That is really a shame. I can honestly say that my last meal there (about 3 years ago), was outstanding....lobster special, beer, and tequila shooters.

David K - 4-18-2010 at 03:36 PM

The Old Pier (Muelle Viejo) is a ways south of the Old Mill... not the same as Don Eddie's.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 4-18-2010 at 04:39 PM

HOLA, i've heard for a couple of years they were trying to sell don eddies and saw a listing on the internet. when i was there last year, i stayed at the old mill and the restaurant at don eddies was only open one of the three days i was there. ARSON FOR PROFIT...IN MEXICO ?

i hope nobody sustained any injuries and will mourn the loss of a very good restaurant. at least over the years, i never got montezuma's revenge !

the other very good restaurant when i believe it was gaston that ran the old mill restaurant and it was very good.

giving the old mill as a reference is a good idea as some of us aren't familiar with some of the names of places in baja proper, especially, ME.

me thinks it'll be harder getting reservations at jardine's now and their very good restaurant. i hear the rooms may be sterile but are very nice, but alas, very few.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

give me time and i'll gladly do it

irenemm - 4-19-2010 at 12:18 AM

The restaurant at don eddie's has been closed for awhile. When you really live off the tourist and they stop coming and you have things to pay. I did see he wanted to sell it but who's buying in this economy. Just los pinos. and they have bought up lots of stuff already. At the bay it is just about only tourist that feed them and the employees. they are pretty far out for lunch and dinners for the locals to live off of . Lost of restaurants not enough people for all the restaurant in this valley.
Sorry for all that put people out of work. And if you don't have money to pay them what is due. Like any vacations, profits, christmas bonuses, and time due for severance. They could have the right to the property to get what is owed to them
Good Luck Don Eddie
Hope you were insureds

bajabass - 4-19-2010 at 04:53 PM

I took Mrs. Dra. Bajabass there the first night I met her. She did not speak a word of English at the time, and my Spanglish was BAD! We had a fair meal, and a very nice walk around after. Her heel got stuck between the boards of the dilapidated dock. I being the perfect gentleman, kneeled, and gently removed it for her, and worked it free from between the boards. Hooked Her!!! Always wanted to take her back again. Guess we will now have to re-live our second date, at La Fonda. Oh well, much closer to home in La Mision.

Really sorry to hear. Don Eddie's was considered a local landmark. I asked a local cop and no Jewish arsonists have been seen around town lately...

BajaGringo - 4-19-2010 at 06:40 PM

Well, we did have some lightning last night. The arsonist must have been running behind schedule. Maybe he got in touch with a cross burning southern Baptist to cover for him???

ArvadaGeorge - 4-19-2010 at 07:02 PM

Wife and i rode out there double 1-2-10 no restaurants open long way back to town on sandy road double..We spent the night;but we probably won't be back.

bajafam - 4-19-2010 at 09:21 PM

It's a shame to hear this. We had quite a few yummy meals at Don Eddie's. And the pictures in the lobby were so wonderful :(

Bob H - 4-19-2010 at 09:52 PM

I only hope that the Old Mill recovers and that no one was hurt. That place was classic.

irenemm - 4-19-2010 at 10:21 PM

The Old Mill was classic when Sr. Al Vela was there. After that it was just a place.
Sr. Vela was a class act. I had the pleasure of meeting him and working with him.
So the Old Mill will never recover to the Class place it once was.
But what burned down was not the old mill it was don eddie a few doors over.

And since he sold it, the Old Mill has certainly had interesting times, as you so well know.

It could have made an interesting Novela.

irenemm - 4-19-2010 at 10:50 PM

Your Welcome Bob
Sr. Vela was the founder of the Old Mill. He passed away a few years ago.
In 1990 I believe is when he sold it to Gaston. Al Vela always was sorry he did that.
Al Vela was a gentlemen to which I had the Honor to know.
He was a chef at the Waldorf Astoria before he came here. He cooked for Kings, Presidents and many famous people. People from all over the world would fly into the Old Mill for Brant hunting. They would stay with Al and his Beautiful wife Dorthy and he would cook for them.
My life has been enriched for knowing such a wonderful man.

DonBaja - 4-20-2010 at 07:29 AM

We stayed at the Old Mill in March and walked over to Don Eddies for dinner and drinks. The service was great because there was only our group of 7 and 2 other tables of 2 in the place on a saturday night. The food was horrible and told the owner about it, he comped all our meals and only charged us for our drinks. That was not expected but I think they knew they were serving inferior food...

Sorrry to see the place is gone now, I have had some fun times there !!! BTW: the resturant at Old Mill looked to be a long way from being ready to open for business...

irenemm - 4-20-2010 at 02:04 PM

Diane
I am working on selling the Novela. I am just finishing part 2 . the Novela continues in Vicente Guerrero at the beach and Costa Brava.
The end is near.

Old Mill can re-open but it will Never be a classic place again.

To Jews relaxing on the beach in Miami. They strike up a conversation:

I was in the garment industry but we had a fire so I retired here and now clip coupons.

What a coincidence! I was also in the garment industry but we had a flood so now I'm retired here clipping coupons.

So...How do you start a flood?

Bajahowodd - 4-20-2010 at 03:46 PM

Bada-Bing!

Udo - 4-20-2010 at 07:42 PM

I think we need to get something straight...

From looking at the posted photos, the Old Mill did not burn down.

What seems to have burned down was Don Eddies' restaurant, front office, tackle shop, continental breakfast buffet area, and all the priceless historic pictures.

I feel that the original poster, 'wadeinthewater' needs to amend his (her) post. The title is very misleading, and Nomads would not intentionally make a misleading statement like that.

I caught up with Jonathon in La Paz at the TailHunter Restraurant and Bar he owns and operates...it was fabulous, that was only a couple days ago. If you are in La Paz take a stroll inside and have a drink or 100...it was a fun time.

What a great guy!

:-)

David K - 5-4-2010 at 06:14 PM

Tim, did you bump into Johnny Johnson in La Paz? He is a yachty now, but being the overall winner of the 1973 Baja 1000 (with Bobby Ferro) and many other Baja races back then, he may have been poking around the NORRA finish line or fiestas? Johnny had a VW buggy shop in Santee years ago.

dean miller - 5-5-2010 at 06:54 AM

I dove around the old mill in the 1950s & 1960s-- Almost deserted at that time...

A few years ago My wife and I had dinner there..It was acceptable.

Of interest was the two diving helments...they were worth a lot of money and I offered a lot of money for them but could not strike a deal..

I can only assume that they are also gone forever? Any one know it they were in the fire?

Dean, it wasn't the Old Mill that burned down. It was Don Eddies next door. Those old diving helmets have got to be somewhere.

I met Jonathan at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach this year. Seems like a nice guy. He alternates with Gary Graham writing for WON, usually every other week. Some good stories and insight from someone who has been living and fishing in La Paz for many years.

We always had a great time stopping by Don Eddie's on our last night coming home. He always accommodated us in our pop up camper in one of his little RV stall, with hookups and everything. Had some great dinners and got plenty chit faced for the stumble back to the camper. Hope he gets back up and running.

BajaBlanca - 6-8-2010 at 07:54 PM

that is really a shame .... only went there for the first time about 8 months ago ..
